I see them as a positive influence on other companies to curve out more aesthetic friendly devices without sacrificing the number-crunching or power requirements, that being said, the Mac OSX has no place for me as a person who enjoys gaming and other applications and would rather not fuss with boot camp or lack of upgrade-ability. I don't think that Apple should be harped on for creating a user-friendly product with good design aesthetics, nor should they be praised for being the industrial leader in proprietary hardware and lack of applicable functionality. They (Windows and OSX) are both individual operating systems with different intentions. OSX is more specialized while Windows is more broad. This causes discrepancies in performance as well as value and availability in products for each OS. As a company, both Apple and Microsoft have done their fair share of shitty things. They are, however, companies. This means there is the general desire to protect their investments by doing said shitty things. My sentiment is, neither company is worth /root-ing for but rather that we should expect the addition of features of one to impact both in a positive way providing us with a much more desirable product.

Case in point, let those who ignorantly follow the products of a company or industry (see: fad) continue on their sheepish ways, in any situation. Arguing is unnecessary as no one here is just going to convert someone to a separate belief with a simple blog comment (even this one will doubtfully have an impact). Let's just go on living our lives with our personal preferences as personal and not work at others for their beliefs. This doesn't mean you can't share your beliefs at all, in fact, I cherish the opinions of others; however, to attack others while disregarding morality... that's just disregarding humanity as well.

Of course some would take into consideration that this is the internet and that everyone is "entitled" to their opinion. I can consider this; however, there should be some sort of morality to our sentiments. I doubt that everyone here would agree with that same sentiment if someone just simple skipped their jolly way up and began blatantly insulting everything a person loved and then posed "This is America, I'm entitled to my opinion." Again, this is the internet, but that does not entitle you to be a complete ***hole. That is why the ban-hammer exists, that's why the comment-rating system exists. The internet isn't dis-ambiguous, there is a right and wrong.

Sorry, I /ranted... it seems like every article on this blasted site (be it Apple, Microsoft, Rock, or Stone :P) seems to spark some sort of un-called-for argument.

Metkis

Comments on

@ metkis

Nobody cares! But old chap, this is not Engadget's phrase. This is Intel's. It is as good as any... think about it; these devices are NOT made for :

1. Laps
2. Notes
3. Desks
4. Palms

They are Ultra mobile, true, but not by definition, because no the whole, they are pretty well 92% sized keyboards; they can't be UMPC's.

So if we start to remove nomenclature derived from the actual physical "place of use", we then have to examine "naming" for short, in terms of actual intended purpose.

It is true, that some mobile devices, referred to as "mobile" phones (cell phones), are now rather loosely linked to "phones" in the pure sense of the device usage. To briefly elaborate with the help of Wiki;

"Phone - short for Telephone"
"Telephone"
....device that is used to transmit and receive sound (most commonly speech), usually two people conversing but occasionally three or more. It is one of the most common household appliances in the world today...

Since the phones being sold by companies like HTC, in terms of its wonderful UI shown in the HTC touch, are no longer JUST being used to convey voice, or not all, it might be better to refer to them as something like "Utility Device with telecommunication features" - "UDTF" ?

BACK ON TRACK:

The Netbook is primarily envisaged, because of its relatively low power, to be primarily used to surf the net, or facilitate Web 2.0 activities and beyond. It is NOT, definitely NOT designed to have local applications running for processing purposes.

If you think about it in these terms, well... it kind of fits the bill.

All CAPITALS for EMPHASIS not for shouting, (I hope that was clear).

kccboy2004

Comments on

Points well made.
