Apple has always prided themselves on being the early adopters of new tech before others made it available (and often, others did include it first but many say that Apple was the first). But Apple was one of the first on the BDA, if they were concerned about it not being the future they would have waited before joining. Apple is also big in the video processing area - you would think that they would want to be one of the first to have support for it. Final Cut Studio has some support for Blu-ray (and even HD DVD), so you would think that they would want to include ASAP to advance that buisness (and claim that that they were used to master the next big movie), not later.

As for AppleTV, I can see the point, but if it is to protect AppleTV then it is the worst possible thing for consumers. First an AppleTV is not a portable device like a MacBook is. Having a Blu-ray reader in a MacBook, and taking that device on the road to show others the quality of the movies would be a great Boom! moment. But it also means that people are tied directly to their TV, when the AppleTV is, as SJ admitted, a hobby, sacrificing having the best (disclaimer: I am a HD DVD fan, but it is over now so BD is the best available now) in their laptops to help out a very small, niche market is not a good decision.

Blu-ray has been rumored to be in the next version of their desktops and laptops every time a new version is released, but like many of the other rumors (Beatles on iTMS announcement that was supposed to happen 3 superbowls ago, LED macbooks that never happen, etc) it never seems to happen.

Nohone

Comments on LG unveils 6x Blu-ray burners: BE06, GBC-H20L, and GBW-H20L

after reading the lg article more than once, i think i finally figured out the difference between the GBW and the GBC. only the GBW does the blu ray burner, whereas the GBC only does blu ray reading. the price looks good, and the mftr looks like one i can trust, and best of all...the speed 6x really has me lookin @ this one. It should be blatantly obvious that Blu-Ray is still expensive. However, there are two positives to this (if you can get past your POV for a sec and read between the lines). For one, you can have 50GB of information on a single disk, not spanned across 12 DVD's (because they format to around 4.3GB a piece) and two, the more products we see like this, the quicker it will drive the price down. I'm seriously so sick about people whinning about how expensive the disks are. YES THEY ARE EXPENSIVE. i mean, DVDRs at one point were for "rich people" when dvdr drives first came out (compared to cdr). The one thing i love about blu ray discs is the ability to put a boat load of crap, on 1 disc. For example....i have the simpsons seasons 1-18 on my comp...a lil under 50 gigs...id much rather burn all of it to 1 disc for 15 bucks, or 2 discs for 9.99 a piece then spend the time to do it on 12 dvd r discs, or 6 dvdr dl discs. Plus in the future if the theortical 200 gb, or even 100 150 gb discs to come to fruition i could back up entire HDs worth of media

SimbaDogg

Comments on LG unveils 6x Blu-ray burners: BE06, GBC-H20L, and GBW-H20L

Exactly. I'd also pay extra to be able to use less storage media. My main complaint was always the lack of availability and extreme ($1000 or so) price of writers, not so much the $15-20 per disk.
