AMD launches Puma platform with Turion X2 Ultra CPUs -- garrowel

While you won't fine a "Puma" sticker anywhere at Computex, rest assured that AMD's latest laptop platform is now official. Instead you'll be looking for AMD Turion X2 Ultra Dual-Core processors, the 780 chipset, and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3000-series graphics on the manufacturer's spec sheet. Come to think of it, a sticker on the 100 or so Puma laptops lined up from HP, Dell, Acer, Asus and others might be easier to spot when the new lappies hit the market as early as this week.

Your remark seems to suggest that Apple counts for anything. Would it not make more sense for them to wait for a nod from HP and Dell ? Add it up, it makes no sense.

Hmm, I really wish they'd had an HP TX2000 series with Radeon 3000 series IGP a few weeks ago when I got one, but I guess it'll keep me more focused on school if I can't play games for shit on it. But seriously, this is a really good development because Radeon 3200 IGPs are pretty capable for IGPs, and I don't think there's really anything else that offers this much power in terms of laptop integrated graphics.

AMD been in front of intel as much as intel been in front of AMD.
I use AMD cause the extra performance i get from C2D wont pay the money i spend for it...
thought various times about going Intel...its just those prices that keep me in AMD...

No, its not. It won't be nearly as fast as an equivalent Core 2 Duo, although they will come with MUCH BETTER INTEGRATED GRAPHICS, so some people without much processing requirements will probably like it.
And hopefully it is more power efficient than a Core 2.

Puma is a great idea. It is not faster than C2D but who needs that? To paraphrase an AMD exec, do you really need to open Excel faster? or would you rather have a decent graphics chip for video HD vids, like what Puma has now?

i like the idea behind this solution...
they go with a build in gpu and a dedicated one in ONE notebook...
means you can have low power consumption for long session and a powerful gpu when you need one...
thats quite nice...
if they go for some nice linux drivers, i might buy an amd notebook

I've used computers with Core 2 Duo's that didn't run near as fast as the Athlon 3800+ Single core I'm sitting in front of right now.
