The angle of the envelope doesn't match the angle of the envelope's reflection on the phone. Stop complaining if your not going to at least look analyze the picture a little closer. There are a couple of things wrong with it. However, the angle is one of the best indicators of a fake.
It's hard to judge if it's a manip or not without trying to replicate the reflection yourself. I did this, it is spot on. Engadget must have 'severely misaligned eyeballs' to overlook it like that. I actually believe this is the real deal, but it's still good people yell FAAAAKE so they feel the need to send in more of those photos.
I bet this is the new 2.8" iPhone nano, which will probably come in diff colors. Pic looks real to me. When you put it in proportion to other stuff in the photo, it appears somewhat smaller.
That small circle on the front would more than likely be the same light sensor that is on the current iPhone that causes the screen to turn off when held to your ear and adjusts screen brightness based on ambient lighting. It can't be seen on the current gen phones because that area is black. At least that is my speculation if this photo is even real.
eww... the front looks terrible... WHAT HAPPENED TO BLACK?! Why would they change it to whatever the deuce that is? I might just go buy a 16GB one. Man I hope this is fake
Go ahead and buy the current iphone, you won't have access to 3G, the software upgrade does not include 3G, in fact it can't. 3G is the radio. It's a shame there are still folks who think they can upgrade the iphone 1.0 to 3G.

Peerless, learn to read? He said he'd buy a current gen because they'd be cheap. Never said anything about wanting 3G. A lot of markets don't have 3G (I can only pick it up when I'm within a few miles of DC or Baltimore) so it's not a selling feature.
Oh, *now* I get the "seriously mis-aligned reflection" bit. But I think the reflection might be of the letter sticking out of the box, not the CD holders. In which case this might not be a fake. But yeah, I prefer the all-black front.

Maybe it's just me..but I actually managed to recreate a similar reflection..granted it was on my ipod video which CAN'T bend light rays..but I still did it ...
Engadget always calls bullshit before they look at stuff right, the reflection is obviously of the letter, not the cd cover, as you can see the writing right next to the apple logo. The reflection is actually aligned quite right... now with that said, the thing is fugly, so I still hope its just a *really good* photoshop fake
Exactly. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to take 3 seconds to examine the reflection to know that it is indeed of the letter and not the booklet (it's not even the CD case).

Is that a camera on the front? Does this mean video calls now? Neat.
TJ @ Jun 7th 2008 3:13PM
Hopefully not real, it doesn't look as good.

The Refleciton of the upper apple is from the letter, not the cd/dvd case.

Does the link actually work for anyone?
Mic2000 @ Jun 7th 2008 3:57PM
Nope doesn't work, the whole website is offline
Paris @ Jun 7th 2008 6:07PM
It can sense your disbelief.
If you believe strong enough that it's real it will work.
Kyle @ Jun 7th 2008 3:24PM
Hmm. I think this could be an Apple plan to cause confusion.
Coy @ Jun 7th 2008 3:12PM
pretty good mock-up though. I wish there was a front facing camera. Could Ryan have missed something in the 3G firmare?

link doesn't work for me either

Looks like a front cam.
Looks great too.
Maxwell @ Jun 7th 2008 4:22PM
But, it's not. Sorry kid.
However, yes, a front facing camera would be quite nice.

You're correct. I wouldn't be surprised if this article was taken down/edited within the next few minutes to save face.
Thomas Ricker @ Jun 7th 2008 3:34PM
indeed, we're looking at the reflection of the logo from the paper. Try to recreate that reflection yourself from the same viewing angle on your own phone.
Thomas
Engadgetluvsappl @ Jun 7th 2008 3:44PM
Thomas, are you thinking that the blue Apple logo on the paper is the one being reflected onto the screen?
To me it looks like there's another smaller Apple logo at the top of the letter. This is the reflection that I see.
I curse your comment editing abilities.
Thomas Ricker @ Jun 7th 2008 3:48PM
yeah, the blue one in the corner since you can see the finely printed text reflected too.
Engadgetluvsappl @ Jun 7th 2008 3:59PM
I still think it's a seperate reflection that's on the section of the paper that's folding over.
I demand a poll!
Engadgetluvsappl @ Jun 7th 2008 4:00PM
What does seem fake though is the video calling camera. There seems to be noise around it.

THE 3G IPHONE IS SO AWESOME, IT BENDS LIGHT WAVES
hurr hurr hurr

It's possible that it's a physical mock-up, too. It can be _both_ not photoshopped, and not legit.
ben @ Jun 7th 2008 4:14PM
Also, obligatory--
This looks shopped. I can tell from some of the pixels and from seeing quite a few shops in my time.
