PureDepth's Multi-Layer Display technology hits casino floors

When PureDepth said its Multi-Layer Display technology would be "shipping soon," it meant "really soon." Nary two months after the company made said assertion, we're now hearing that IGT (a global computerized game machine company) has secured the aforesaid technology for a number of slot machines and other casino-bound systems. The REELdepth family of games, which includes around 70 of IGT's classics as well as a few new AVP (Advanced Video Platform) themes, should be luring vacationers and gamblers alike in the not-too-distant future, but sadly, we're not given a clue as to what casinos will be adopting said machines.

Vegas casinos usually use machines with mechanical reels driven by stepper motors although they do have a few video based machines.

I worked for a casino as a slot tech for about a year or so...These things aren't exactly fun to work on (especially after a few coin jams--though now most of them use paper tickets instead of coins)

A number of other states use video slots due to their gaming licenses.

This just seems like another gimmick although the effect could be kind of cool. One more step toward making video slots like a bit more like the reel thing...(pun intended).

I saw one of these already installed on a Monopoly video game over Memorial Day and it was surprisingly awesome. We were at the Paris casino so you should be able to hunt them down. Too bad it ate my money...

That was actually something else. Those are games made by WMS that just have holes for the reels cut into the screen, and have actual spinning reels behind it. These PureDepth displays are two layered screens and are pretty frickin' sweet. No moving parts like the other game.

I also have seen these already in Vegas, mostly the monopoly machines... gives the game a 3D look...

This is very similar to the Monopoly slot but is not the same. Monopoly has only one LCD panel with an traditional and flush LED backlight. The backlight has holes for the physical slot elements which self illuminate. But yeah, casinos are having fun with their display technology.
