As we understand it, RIM's so-called
Javelin is a new BlackBerry completely devoid of 3G that's currently on track for a mid-2009 (yes, 2009) launch. That sucks, yes, but at least it'll
look mighty purty if these shots of an engineering dummy in the wild are any indication. The whole phone is an interesting study in modern, high-end 2.5G design, actually, on account of the rumored WiFi, GPS, expansive display, and generous (by RIM standards, anyway) 3.2 megapixel camera. Don't get us wrong, the
Bold would still find its way into our pockets long before this one would -- but hey, diversity in the product line is a good thing. As long as it doesn't involve a Burberry-clad
8800.

no 3G?
middle of 2009?
are you kidding me?
Bad Beaver @ Jun 16th 2008 1:19PM
It's a BlackBerry, of course they are.
Hmm, BurBerry... just chavalicious.
Niki @ Jun 16th 2008 1:20PM
ok, I've got an 8320. It's a wonderful 2.5G phone...
But it didn't come out in freaking 2009!
SHoe @ Jun 16th 2008 8:07PM
The Blackberry 9000 (aka Blackberry 'Bold') is 3G. This is a Blackberry 9000 without 3G. Why? For markets where there is no 3G or where 3G is limited.
djs @ Jun 16th 2008 1:16PM
it looks like the one on the right has some nasty disease
Rich @ Jun 16th 2008 1:23PM
Diagnosis: Chavitis.
bohsocks @ Jun 16th 2008 1:35PM
Argyle is a life choice, not a disease. What an unprogressive bunch y'all are.
OneLove @ Jun 16th 2008 5:07PM

natels @ Jun 16th 2008 1:18PM
Burberry on a Blackberry.. Horrible combination of fruits.
Lowest Ranked @ Jun 16th 2008 1:28PM
Don't know about you but I prefer Burberry over Dingleberry.
phanbouy @ Jun 16th 2008 1:38PM
when in doubt, there's always Ray Bradburry
amnesiac42 @ Jun 16th 2008 1:49PM
Why would they make a Burberry Blackberry anyway? All chavs need in a phone is a speaker to play their appalling excuse for music out on buses to annoy people!
Sarunas @ Jun 16th 2008 1:20PM
Sloppy photos as usual. Is it so hard to clean the grease before taking pictures? Diffuse that flash somewhat?
Mile @ Jun 16th 2008 1:21PM
Plaid is the new black.
SneAKz @ Jun 16th 2008 1:27PM
My guess would be it's the BlackBerry 9300 Javelin (Successor to the Curve).
Some Kid @ Jun 16th 2008 1:39PM
it looks a hell of a lot like the Bold
and if it is for maybe VZW or Sprint, you dont give a new name to a phone for a new carrier- you just number it differently
Marc @ Jun 16th 2008 1:46PM
Why would Blackberry make a VZW or Sprint specific Bold that is not 3G? You'd think, at the present time, AT&T would be receiving the 2.5G garbage. But in 2009? Wow...
Kory @ Jun 16th 2008 1:53PM
Could this be a new Hotspot@Home UMA phone for T-Mob?
Cal @ Jun 16th 2008 1:53PM
I want the 8800! It'll go perfect with my kappa tracksuit, fred perry t-shirt and burberry cap!!
striggity @ Jun 16th 2008 2:42PM
that picture is hilarious...cuz on the surface, it looks just like the bold. lol.

neofolklore @ Jun 16th 2008 3:21PM
I see the subtle pictures of Jason are still being done, way to go Engadget
bolezhinkov @ Jun 16th 2008 3:28PM
doesn't the photo taker have a cloth or something? I cant stand seeing nice tech all covered in grease and dead skin cells.
soemone should make a spray on/wash off type thing to cover your hands when using fingerprint-vulnerable devices.
silverblackvoid @ Jun 16th 2008 3:47PM
somebody handled those phones with smudgy hands.
bargh @ Jun 16th 2008 3:52PM
ugly bricks. useless formfactor. i'd feel ashamed owning one.. even for free.

Looking forwards to getting my hands on the following phones in the next few months
N96
X1
iPhone 3G
HTC Diamond...
just had the S.E C902 in 2 days ego.. sick sick phone, the built quality is solid and the camera quality is better than the N82 and the 95 8GB (which after testing all the 5mp cam/phones is the best so far.
sold 15 in two days (my store in based in a little town in Wales in the U.K)
last note: If 100% of the UK iphone buying population was to be made aware of the bluetooth been crippled in the iPhone the sale will drop 50% guaranteed. bluetooth is HUGE here
(the U.K population love sharing pictures and videos i guess)
Cygnus @ Jun 16th 2008 7:32PM
And this post of yours is related to the article how?
ccjjr5912 @ Jun 16th 2008 6:11PM
T-Mobile, if you are watching, if this non-3G Bold is all you can bring to customers, I'm gone... switching to AT&T and getting a 3G phone! Turn on your 3G network in major cities NOW! T-mobile is years behind the U.S. carriers and compare that to Asia and Europe and it's just a joke!
SHoe @ Jun 16th 2008 8:16PM
I think There is some confusion here. According to BGR, the Javelin is the EVDO version .
Blackberry 9000 series:
Blackberry Bold = HSDPA
Blackberry Javelin = EVDO
Blackberry Niagara = EDGE
Also: all the other specs listed in the article are identical to the Bold. They are all the exact same phone except for the network type.
Stabs @ Jun 16th 2008 11:02PM
@Shoe
I'm afraid you're wrong. This form factor is much smaller than the Bold, just look at the keyboard, they're totally different.
Bold = 8800 series replacement
Javelin - GSM 8300 series replacement
Niagara = CDMA 8300 series replacement
Mobius_1 @ Jun 16th 2008 9:40PM
Blackberry Javelin?
Naomi Campbell (and a whole raft of other hot-tempered celebrities) just got a new weapon
Tyson @ Jun 17th 2008 12:07AM
serious no 3g just outrageous...
