I'm blasting a 125" glory on the wall and it looks amazing. The contrast is very good and I run it in low lamp mode rated for 5000 hours.
It has very goos position adjustably too. My only complaints are it is a big projector(compared to other sub-1080p's I looked at but 1080p projectors tend to be bigger anyway) and it could be brighter. I can play games on it with the basement lights on(you loose contrast though) so it isn't that bad but I'm not sure how it would work in the living room during the day.

chris fredette

Comments on Mitsubishi reveals HC5500 1080p projector, other forgettable ones

Hopefully it'll have better blacks than the HC4900. I hope that they add native 1080p/24 support on this one. I also hope it improves the contrast a bit. Those are really the only complaints I've had about my projector so far. Mitsubishi makes a great projector at good prices. The "rated" bulb life is also very good (~5000 hours on low lamp mode).

Cossa

Comments on Mitsubishi reveals HC5500 1080p projector, other forgettable ones

I have the HC4900 also. Once I got my room dark enough, and got a low gain gray screen and put black velvet around the borders, the gray levels are not a problem. Actually, it is the white levels that are 'off' from what my LCD HDTV looks like (the projector has deeper blacks than the LCD HDTV). I also had to put a HEPA filter on the air intake to prevent dust from getting into it. But, I am very happy with my projector, especially considering the price was under $1400 for a 1080p one.

rcappo

Comments on Mitsubishi reveals HC5500 1080p projector, other forgettable ones

Agreed, but I think any ambient light will ruin your contrast. The blacks are very good IMHO and I've had over 5 different 50"+ HDTV's.
The price performance is #1.
It is also VERY quiet. I sit basically directly under it and can't hear a thing unless it is very very quiet.

chris fredette

Comments on Mitsubishi reveals HC5500 1080p projector, other forgettable ones

I think it's time to upgrade from the stone age aka 720p.

AaronKalb

Comments on Mitsubishi reveals HC5500 1080p projector, other forgettable ones

This is good news I am looking to put in a 160" screen in my new house.

Eric H
