Samsung's 1080p SP-A800B DLP projector now available
It took nearly a year to get here, but shortly after being reviewed, Samsung's upscale SP-A800B DLP projector is finally available in the USA. Co-developed with industry legend Joe Kane, this 1080p PJ features a native contrast ratio of 10,000:1, a 95% aperture ratio, 16-microsecond response time and a full 1,920 x 1,080 resolution. Additionally, it hums along quietly at 25dB and gets backed by a two-year warranty. Sammy's not bothering to tell you the price, but we've heard it'll list for just under ten grand.

is there really that big of a market for very high priced projectors? Sure they are great and all but for 10k (supposed) price tag...you could get a very very nice LCD or plasma tv
Shinigami @ Jun 19th 2008 4:02PM
Since when 10k is a very high price? xD
What about a TV for 100k?
Kurian @ Jun 19th 2008 4:03PM
Its not high priced considering a fuck all 1024x760 projector costs an easy 3 grand.
Don @ Jun 19th 2008 4:06PM
If you're looking for large, then this is a MUCH better deal than an LCD or plasma. I haven't seen a lot of 120 inch LCD's or plasmas for under 10k
Mike @ Jun 19th 2008 4:07PM
If there making so many of them undoubtedly there is a demand for them. The good ones don't really start until about 10K. You can get them for less but you know you're sacrificing something.
LOGIC much?
Don @ Jun 19th 2008 4:11PM
How much? Great now I get to throw out my 1yr old 50inch plasma.
Any one wanna buy it from me?
Nomi @ Jun 19th 2008 4:07PM
looks sleek
jason51873 @ Jun 19th 2008 4:11PM
In today's economy I'm sure tons of ppl can afford to waste 10k on a stupid projector. F - sending the kids though college get a worthless $10k projector!!
T @ Jun 19th 2008 4:23PM
"Worthless $10k projector."
Speechless.
jason51873 @ Jun 19th 2008 5:06PM
Worthless to me.
And I'm guessing to a lot of people actually.
Maybe I'll give you and example.
-someone with no hidef media (HD Sat. , Cable, or Blueray)
-someone who would rather send their kids though college
-someone who would rather exercise then sit on the couch watching TV
I can go on, but I think you get the point. However, I should be speechless due to the fact that I actually had to explain this to you.
slarity @ Jun 19th 2008 6:21PM
I paid for my own college, I think some day when I have kids they can pay for their own as well.
Don @ Jun 19th 2008 4:35PM
Projectors will almost do away with bulky tvs no matter how slim they get IMO. It will just take some time for the prices to drop. Once they start dropping tv turners in them it will be all over for the traditional tv set.
Imagine your whole living room wall becoming a tv screen and your small coffee table will hold your entire entertainment center minus the wireless speakers you have mounted in or on the walls.
jason51873 @ Jun 19th 2008 5:10PM
I agree, but I think they will need to come out with some sort of new lighting tech. Even if projector prices dropped in 1/2 - most families watch A LOT of TV and with bulbs from $250 - $500 a pop projectors will still be too expensive.
JCA @ Jun 20th 2008 11:13AM
I kinda want to agree with you on the whole "put a TV tuner and people will come" thing....but yea....little kids watching as much TV as they do would burn out a bulb every year....plus, I don't think enough people would want to take the necessary steps to throw some kind of ambient light control in the PJ room....
Maybe if LED LAMPS ever become viable?
jitty @ Jun 19th 2008 4:36PM
16 microsecond response time? It can respond in less than 60 thousand of a second? 16 milliseconds sounds more reasonable...
chadives @ Jun 19th 2008 4:44PM
10k is nothing in terms of high end home theater, I have sold systems that range $40k to $100k a lot more frequently than most would expect. definately not for real people that actually have to think about what things cost.
"If you have to ask than it is too expensive" -unknown
Andrea @ Jun 20th 2008 7:14AM
"If you don't ask then you're too stupid"
audiogek @ Jun 19th 2008 5:17PM
@jitty
16 microseond is correct, according to the source(check link on top).
to quote " ...and a fast 16 microsecond (0.016 millisecond) response time..."
It's not like there's a old fashioned lcd behind the lens.
Alex @ Jun 19th 2008 8:20PM
Well the press release from the read link says:
"16 microsecond (0.016 millisecond) response time"
So it would seem to be correct.
