Cheap stuff always get more sales than expensive stuff. take a look at wal-mart: low margin was compensated by large sale volume.

i think the execution was wrong. The Y410 was sold as a 3000 series, and it had the orange buttons and Veriface that's standard IdeaPad fare, but came months before the others that had the full IdeaPad "themes" (bottom hinge, stylized lids) fleshed out. I think you meant Y510 there.

I like Lenovo's 3000 series (typing on one, in fact).

*Side-mounted headphone/mic ports. Check.
*USB x1 on left side, USBx3 on right side. 4 in total. Check.
*Better feeling (and looking) keyboard than the majority of the competition. Check.
*No irregularly-shaped keys on keyboard. A pet hate of mine. Check.
*Page Up and Page Down keys next to arrow keys (a personal fave). Check.
*Minimal tackyness, silver-painted plastic and embellishments compared to competition (tho certainly far from ideal but IMO far better than nearly all competing models): check.

So I'm sorry to see the 3000 series go. Tho the IdeaPads share some of the same features, some are gone, like the 4 USB ports.

To me there was no point spending more. Laptops really really start to face diminishing returns beyond this point.

I like the 'rough' lid look. Beefed up the sound apparently, and more multimedia/touchy focus. Frameless monitor. VeriFace. Both Zzzz but par for the course in the copycat everybody-doing-the-same notebook market. On the 17inch models we have the ever-tacky lit blue halo and lit Lenovo logo. Oh yes. Just what I've always wanted. LOL. Good reason to avoid those, then. Tho they do give you the option for two hard drives there. Nice for a plug-bound desktop replacement.]]>Jun 21st 2008 4:45AM
