And I have now turned a couple friends and my girlfriend on to it. The breaking point was when she got a Zune and found that none of the music she purchased at the iTunes store would work on it. Not happy to say the least.

What I have found is that most average consumers, including my girlfriend, never realize that they are locked to an iPod when using iTunes. It's only when they try and hook up an alternate device and find that it won't work when the realization hits. Then, the consumer thinks that they simply did something wrong and get frustrated with the whole process. And then you have yet another average user that gets turned off to the whole idea of buying music online because it's too hard. And it's all because of DRM.

Thank gawd that my girlfriend has the geek boyfriend that taught her about the evils of DRM and to stay away from iTunes for buying music.

I hope that the record companies can pull their heads out of their asses to realize that fairly priced MP3's with no DRM will HELP, not hurt their bottom line.

Demodave

Comments on Amazon's MP3 store nearing global launch?

Can't you see Dave? Right now, iTunes is somewhat dictating the prices on the songs they sell. But once other online sellers (Amazon, Napster, TBD) start to get a bigger share of online music purchases, competition will drive the price down. If the record companies make the wholesale prices too expensive to the retailers, then consumers will simply stop purchasing their favorite music....and some will just find free downloads instead.

Like I said, price the MP3's at a fair price and most people will happily (and legally) purchase their favorite songs and albums instead of stealing them. Competition is healthy for the consumer...Apple (or any other single compnay) being so dominant as to be able to "fix" the prices is not good for the consumer.

Demodave

Comments on Amazon's MP3 store nearing global launch?

Having trouble reading?

allislost

Comments on Amazon's MP3 store nearing global launch?

Ignore the troll.

Wii60

Comments on Amazon's MP3 store nearing global launch?

You need to check your browser you don't get paid double to say the same thing twice.

Wii60

Comments on Amazon's MP3 store nearing global launch?

Yes, ocean to both questions. And as such Apple was forced to either DRM or have no songs to sell. Remember Apple is not a content maker, without content they can't sell anything.

Right now the only real big player in the Digital downloads is Apple and a lot of record companies do not like the fact that Apple is so dominant. And because of that they can get away with keeping the prices at a flat fee for popular songs and for older songs.

let's face it, if it was up to record companies we'd be paying 1.99 to 2.99 for an old 128kbps track. Popular tracks singles would probably cost 3.99 to 4.99. Or we would be stuck with paying 12.99 - 15.99 for a monthly subscription of rent-a-songs. I can't speak for most people but I personally do not have a need for monthly rent-a-songs. I don't listen to that much music to justify doing a subscription. And i do listen to that much music i might as well listen to a radio.

Like or hate it, Apple has done something that neither Sony or MS has been able to do and that's to start a profitable digital download service.

For better or worse Apple has found a system to make digital download legal and cheap.

Truth

Comments on Amazon's MP3 store nearing global launch?

I have completely switched to Amazon and have never looked back.
