It has BT so I can put my BT GPS sensor on my hat and always have good signal. Ever put a GPSr like this in your pocket so you can record data only to find you've lost signal while it was in your pocket. Dang, I hate when that happens. Then you have to wait for a signal to be reacquired. This takes too long and messes up my timing while conducting point counts for the USGS and Audubon. My PocketPC with USGS Topo maps on it is perfect as well because I can record my data into excel on the unit on the official forms needed for the survey at hand. Not only that but I can play recordings of bird songs as well to verify species identification or as part of the survey depending on the protocol. Oh yeah, it has SD and CF slots on it so I've got tons of storage for maps and forms and recordings. Been doing this since 2004 with a 4" screen and at 625 megahertz. Too cool! Not to mention the driving navigation features of Pharos and Co-Pilot.

Jeffro

Comments on DeLorme Earthmate PN-40 GPS unit for those of you who go outside

Good job, DeLorme. They continue to be the most responsive GPSr manufacturer on the market. Magellan went to crap after being bought by Thales and there hasn't been any improvement under Shah. The Triton was and still is ridiculously buggy. Garmin still has good customer support, but is no longer innovative and is just living off their name. DeLorme's engineers participate in user forums and have listened to the criticisms about the PN-20. The dual processor should speed up route calculation and screen redraws, which were a big criticism. Good job picking a 3-axis compass as well. Garmin for whatever reason sticks with 2-axis. Magellan uses 3-axis, but you can't trust Magellan anymore. Let's hope this DeLorme has good geocaching capabilities

geognerd

Comments on DeLorme Earthmate PN-40 GPS unit for those of you who go outside

Ultimate GPS? Whatever they have said about how difficult the software is, it's true time 10. I am a geocacher and purchased the PN-40 in hopes of getting a serious tool. I can't load my 21 pocket queries. Adding one geocache at a time using the web plugin sucks. The firmware upgrade helped, but I'd buy a GPS 60CSx. My Earthmate PN-40 is back in its box ready to be returned to the store. It's not a serious tool for a serious geocacher.

Marcellus

Marcellus Barrus
