ASUS's newest, Atom-based 900 series Eee PCs may be fast approaching availability, but it looks like the company is still doing its best to get as many plain old Celeron-based Eee PC 900s out the door as possible, with it now offering up a $100 rebate on the already low-priced laptop. That brings the price down to $449, which is certainly a decent enough bargain compared to the $599 the updated Eee PC 901 will supposedly be going for --
Amazon price mix-ups notwithstanding. From the looks of it, both Amazon and ZaReason are offering in the rebate (good 'til July 31th) at the moment, but we'd expect the offer to start showing up at other retailers before too long as well.

It would be a bargain if the newer model weren't superior in every possible way. I'd feel just a little but TOO behind the times if I had an Eee 900 at this point... they're almost like the "prototype" model now.
Blaine Oliver @ Jul 8th 2008 3:53PM
$100 off but with extra bezel !
Homeboy @ Jul 8th 2008 3:04PM
It still doesn't bring the price down to the promised $199.
Karl Viklund @ Jul 8th 2008 3:06PM

Dillon @ Jul 8th 2008 3:54PM

Pretty sad, seeing how I paid 420 shipped for my dell vostro 1400 with xp, 2gb ram, 250 hd, camera, extended battery, and dvd burner.
rock99rock @ Jul 8th 2008 3:14PM
SOOOO True, Heinz-kits Velvet. Although im sure these might serve purpose to some, it is difficult to justify jumping down in SO many specs and still pay more.
sinjinn @ Jul 8th 2008 4:12PM
i saw one of these at a petrol station last night. the person was watching a movie while serving customers through the window. i dont think he was missing his 250gb hd or dvd burner.

LOL at the Ace Ventura reference...
Heinz @ Jul 8th 2008 4:47PM
So sin, you are telling me that if you bought a 200 turd, you wouldn't care that you got all your monies worth? I mean you could have got the turd with a diamond it it for the same price, with a better warranty and tons more options for upgrading.
Alllllrighty then!
sinjinn @ Jul 9th 2008 4:35PM
i dont know what that means.
justin @ Jul 8th 2008 3:10PM
I found a grizzly Nick Negroponte in the middle of Union Square attempting to push spray painted OLPCs as the Eee PC 900 and he promised a similar rebate if I purchase Kibbles and Bits from a participating market.
I asked if it came pre-loaded with Linux, but he just stood there disgusted, closed his eyes, exhaled...and then urinated on himself in anger.
I felt like I was in CompUSA all over again.

I'm confused, you can buy New eee 900s from Newegg and Amazon for $399.99, What's the $449 all about?
Stuart @ Jul 8th 2008 3:24PM
i have the 900 and love it. look at the reviews - it beats the 901 hands down on most operations.
perfectionist @ Jul 8th 2008 3:41PM
To clear up the mess of 9 inch models:
The original EEE900 models were priced at $549:
- 12GB with Windows XP
- 20GB with Linux
These are the ones with the $100 rebate.
The new EEE900 models:
- 16GB with Linux ($399)
- 16GB with Windows XP ($449)
The new EEE901 models:
- 12GB with Windows XP ($599)
- 20GB with Linux ($599)
The EEE900 series has a Celeron processor and 4-cell battery.
The EEE901 series has a Atom processor and 6-cell battery.
Now, Asus has to lower the price on the 7-inch series since one of the 900 models is $399.
Benson @ Jul 8th 2008 4:19PM
Oh, so maybe one of them will be, say, $200 now?
EBF @ Jul 8th 2008 3:42PM
Captain Obvious says: Dear Asus, If you make the battery last all day, they will come.
0150r @ Jul 8th 2008 4:27PM
Way to many versions of this thing...there are two versions of the eeepc900 now? MSI Wind looks like the best bet for me.
neuromancer2701 @ Jul 8th 2008 4:38PM
This model looks the best to me.
- 16GB with Linux ($399)
They must have a different flash vendor/chip for it do this cheap. Why would you get the rebate one?
The Wind does look good but they battery time was pretty bad in the last review I read. Something like 2.6 hrs.
901 was 5+ hrs don't know what the new 900 is going to be but if it is 2.5+ hrs I will take it for 400$
I find it hard to believe that the 901 is worth $200 more, but it has all those little feature people might want.
BOGRASH @ Jul 8th 2008 5:15PM
so many idiots late to the party when it comes to eee discussions. i hate you all.
tiuk @ Jul 8th 2008 5:50PM
Still too expensive. That's pretty sad.
hickhamt @ Jul 9th 2008 11:50AM
