Only medium to high-end SLRs can pull that off with usable photos (e.g., Canon 40D has this as a special function; Canon 5D has it as a standard option).

Sample of a P.S. camera Panasonic Lumix tz5 @ ISO3200 2MP....yes it has lost all the fine detail but you have to think about the audience.

I took this smaple pic and in PS and applied some local contrast processing USM (25,100) , and sharpened with USM (100, 1.5), increased the exposure a bit and ran it through Noiseware and the improvement was 1000 times better.

Most people including myself would be fine with this @ ISO3200.

The #1 rule is know your audience. Most people (consumer level) take pics and post them online on MySpace or flickr or print them as 4x6 and 5x7. They also don't really know what good detail really looks like.

I own a 40D and 400D (XTi) and believe me sometimes I just want something small to fit in my pocket. Of course I'd probably go for a G9 which is great (+ you get RAW capabilities).
