RED delivers new rendering of Scarlet 3K camera
From the word go, amateurs and professionals alike were hot for RED's (relatively) minuscule Scarlet. After all, can you really go wrong with a 3K camera in one hand and a Dairy Queen dipped cone in the other? (No, no you cannot.) Nevertheless, those anxious to see more as the run-up to its early 2009 release continues can feast their eyes on an all new rendering. Oh, and if you're the talkative type, tag the read link and join in the 8+ page discussion about that image you're eyes are still fixated on above.

This is a great camera! I can't wait for it to come out, I am sold on it. At last, some true 24p (no pulldown removal headaches like in the Canon consumer series), a good lens and a 2/3s sensor that should create a pretty good background blur. Even if the camera was just 2k instead of 3k it would have been a marvel in my opinion.

It's black.

What, are you racist?!
farfisa @ Jul 10th 2008 9:04PM
Maybe he just thought something called the "RED Scarlet" might be red? Or scarlet. Which is another word for red. But it's black. Hmm?
Michael @ Jul 10th 2008 10:36PM
It's black so it doesn't reflect any light. Like any good camera should be. The initial renderings of RED ONE were chrome and some cinematographers complained about having to flag off the camera so it didn't create crazy stray light on a film set.

I think realistically only the inside and rim need to be black in respect to reflections.
Most consumer cameras are silver too nowadays and I bet the pro cameras are black to make them look classic to cater to expectations rather than real practical reasons.
Derek @ Jul 11th 2008 7:24PM
I guess you've never had 10kW of stage lighting to deal with?
Wwhat @ Jul 12th 2008 12:06PM
You don't normally point that at your camera do you? If you do you might want to google how to set up lighting.
joelovescoffee @ Jul 10th 2008 6:27PM
Oh, how sweet it would be if this was the next pair of Oakleys to be graced by Dennis Rodman. It reminds of those helmet shades they came out with a few years ago. Thermonuclear!!!!

this WILL be my next camera, I got to shoot a student film on the red, and now can't go back to profesional DV cameras any more.

I like the tech inside, it's the ugly facade I don't like. Does it come with fuzzy a mitten?

fuzzy a mitten? oops I must of meant a fuzzy kitten.

Doesn't look very 0xFF0000 to me. Looks more like 0x000000.
DarkLight @ Jul 10th 2008 8:25PM
Yeah that's what I was thinking... I mean, come on! At least make the "RED" logo 0xFF0000... I know it's just a rendering, but that's a pretty obvious detail they missed there
Wwhat @ Jul 11th 2008 9:38AM
Talking of which, when will MS start to support 10bit displays on the desktop? And when will they (not MS) add 10 bit color to HTML, you have to do that early and not after the displays arrived massively.
In short we need 0x000000000000 :) (made it 4 rather than 3 zeros per color for programming convenience) oh and while they are upgrading, add the mask too, so 0x0000000000000000, phew we might need a new notation

I didn't know Hummer makes cameras.
Skyride @ Jul 10th 2008 7:35PM
Ok, I havent heard of this camera which is a shock to me.
Whats the deal with it? A cheap 3K camera? How cheap? Im fed up of the mildly grainy image of my array of pro-sumer miniDV tapes (i film lots of stuff).
gamedude420 @ Jul 10th 2008 8:21PM
The cam itself will be in the $3,000 price range. its not a prosumer cam its professional movie cam. so it doesnt include a lens or storage device. it so for a cam package with lens and all you are looking at over 30-40k
the 5k epic cam itswlf is suposed to be around 30-40k just for the came. we are geting 12 epics and 12 of the scarlets. we have 5 red one (4k) cams already. but red is allowing users to exchange them for full credit towards the epic, so we will do that when the epics are shipped
gamedude420 @ Jul 10th 2008 8:25PM
you will be able to get a 256GB SSD DRIVE for the cam RED sells them for $4,500 . i would never trust any hard drive with moving parts so the SSD ones are great.
Eugenia Loli-Queru @ Jul 10th 2008 8:34PM
From what I heard, it will come with a lens.
Nick Catalano @ Jul 10th 2008 10:41PM
It will come with a lens
gamedude420 @ Jul 10th 2008 8:42PM
but if they are going for the 3k price range i cant see them including a lens though (thats if it still targeting 3,000 price range)
cause a good lens can cost way more than $3,000
Shaocaholica @ Jul 10th 2008 9:10PM
It comes with a lens. The lens is fixed and not removeable. Its a constant T2.8 lens with a decent focal length range. The Scarlet will shoot to CF cards that are inexpensive. The whole point of this camera is to have these features at a relatively low cost.
gamedude420, you really need to look outside the professional cinema/video industry. Quality lenses don't cost $3000 to make. Sure, companies sell cameras, lenses, media, etc at super high prices to high budget productions but in the end, a digital cinema camera does not need to cost the prices big movie houses are paying.
Jason @ Jul 11th 2008 9:37AM
This is a truly amazing lens - http://www.pictureline.com/products/3298/Leica_50mm_f1.0_(E60)/
Quality lenses can EASILY cost $3000 or more, much more.
dreamscape86 @ Jul 11th 2008 4:49PM
Regardless of what good lenses may or may not cost to produce, the Scarlet has a fixed lens of the specifications that Shaocaholica stated. Stop being argumentative, this has been confirmed *repeatedly* by Jim Jannard himself, and was a subject of much debate within the RED community at the time.
Stephanie Jobs @ Jul 10th 2008 9:26PM
... and what does this have to do with the iPhone?
Jason @ Jul 11th 2008 12:50PM
mmm... WAIT TO GO JIM!!! I WANT ONE!!
Hellios @ Jul 11th 2008 2:27AM
Wow, RED SCARLET, this is like the best news of this week!
If I still worked at my previous job I'd so pitch the idea to buy 3 of these (if that's even possible, I know there was a huge waiting line for the ONE) and then eventually replace most of the aged hardware...
Shahryar @ Jul 11th 2008 2:37AM
Bit of a noob question...
If I'm currently a Sony HC1 owner looking to get something of a more serious camera to try better projects, and had been eying the Canon XH-A1 because the $3k price range was doable, should I maybe consider this? I see one person saying that realistically with everything it will cost $30-40k which is... undoable beyond belief. But if others are saying it comes with a lens and able to shoot to CF, then maybe I can consider this?
Or is this just too big a jump to go to as a current HC1 owner and I should get here later (and go for the XH-A1 now/soon)?

Ohh, I cant wait to have my delicate hands around that Big Cone.
bsbeamer @ Jul 11th 2008 7:55AM
from what I've heard, the hold-up resides in the fact that current CF cards are not fast enough to handle the data rate and burst rates of the camera - therefore they are not able to produce the camera yet. they design their technology for the future technology breakthroughs - not the current. that creates this "lag" in waiting for the industry to catch up.
that being said, "inexpensive" CF cards may or may not work with this camera - an 8GB SanDisk Ducati CF card is still close to $200 per card. I'm not sure when the 16GB ones will be out. But if these aren't fast enough, then we're going to be waiting for the SanDisk "5" or "6" series to actually work with this thing...
However, a standard CF card may be able to handle normal data rates without variable frame rates - not sure though.
Also need to consider audio - I know there was mention of support last time...
I remember this camera being able to take 2 cards at one time with the ability to hot swap them, but look at the HVX200 and similar cameras... the amount of memory in this is much more reasonable, but for the "average Joe" this is going to be a really expensive camera to get a few shots of the family and kids playing baseball
