iPod touch 1.1.5 shows up, confusion abounds
For the three of you who don't either have $10 for 2.0 or didn't already grab the leaked version for free, Apple has released iPod touch firmware version 1.1.5. There's little word as to what the point revision does (we assume stability fixes and what-not), but we do know that it doesn't include the App Store. In the end, that might be a good thing for those of you who just use your iPod touch as an iPod and aren't interested in all that AIM and Monkey Ball craziness, which we respect. Really. The direct link to the file is in the Read link -- use at your own discretion.

Good :)
l.caelestis+spam @ Jul 15th 2008 7:22PM
But when does iPod touch 3G come out? /end sarcasm
Big Al @ Jul 15th 2008 7:54PM
I know you're trying to be sarcastic, but that just doesn't make any sense. If they put 3G into the iPod Touch, they'd have to get a service provider to provide a connection, and no one would provide the service for free. (Unless you're desperate for business like Sprint in their agreement with the Kindle.) If they charge for the net usage, it becomes virtually identical to the 3G iPhone minus the camera and Bluetooth.
Lucretius @ Jul 15th 2008 8:09PM
I know you said you knew he was being sarcastic, but considering your response, I still just don't think you know he was being sarcastic.
madwh @ Jul 15th 2008 9:00PM
I know you said you know he knew he was being sarcastic but I don't think he knows what 'sarcastic' means.
bohsocks @ Jul 15th 2008 9:37PM
Big Al... I tried to think of some verbally hurtful way of expressing just how stupid you are..... and I was baffled when I couldn't come up with anything.
I've concluded that your statement, undoubtedly, is the stupidest thing I have EVER read! I am in awe of you.
Here is your complimentary cheese wheel and plaque. Now begone.

YOU'VE JUST GOTTA LOVE FAIR AND BALANCED ENGADGET.
They ran iphone hooplah perpetually and certainly didn't play up the fact that 2.0 OS has been BRICKING IPHONES.
And not just unlocked iphones. Its been bricking 1st generation, legal iphones.
Ender Wiggin @ Jul 15th 2008 11:30PM
I don't think that word (sarcasm) means what you think it means....

tb @ Jul 15th 2008 11:32PM
3g as in third generation, fall 2009 for sure /sarcasm that knows it replies to a sarcastic post
Jacob Wilson @ Jul 17th 2008 11:06AM
"I know you're being sarcastic, but let me take you seriously...."
.....is that what you all read? ...because that's what I read.
computer.dude.28 @ Jul 15th 2008 7:24PM
Wow. Apple is supporting those who denied to pay them more money? That's weird..
Tim Ficke @ Jul 15th 2008 7:26PM
Sorry couldn't resist...
But on the other hand, Apple is plain stupid for charging customers on something that the iPhone gets for free. Just because we don't need a phone we get hurt in the end because we didn't want to buy what Apple wanted us to buy? Even worse. Those of us who do have the iPod touch are spending more money now then the phone!!!!!!!!! But oh no. We didn't get the Phone so we are the ones taht get raped. Apple overcharged us immensely on the touch and now keep trying to charge more. Something needs to be done.
ch0rx @ Jul 15th 2008 7:27PM
Cool dude, congratulations! I bet it feels good, doesn't it?
you're worthless.
Senor_Tom @ Jul 15th 2008 7:30PM
Its pointless getting the updates in my opinion anyway. You pay for apps that generally are only really any good with internet, and when you do have internet the chances are you are in your home, so you can just use a computer.....
And if you are out its effort to connect to a network anyway.
gad get @ Jul 15th 2008 9:20PM
Apple is so cruel to its incredibly loyal customers, making them pay for firmware updates. I mean, why should all those early adopters suffer for their enthusiasm? Compare that to the Samsung P2 and its free update after free update, each introducing new features that make it a better and better deal compared to the Touch.
jupiterthunder @ Jul 15th 2008 10:23PM
@ gad get
If anyone finds my P2, please let me know.
I'm stocked for the update b/c they don't halfass the updates with the P2. Sucks to know it's waiting for me when I've so cleverly hidden my P2 from myself.
gad get @ Jul 16th 2008 1:08AM
You lost your P2? Ooo!
Brian @ Jul 15th 2008 7:32PM
I think that this is just an "oh crap, we accidentally leaked 2.0 for free, in a *legal* way, so we need to clear up this confusion". Lets release 1.1.5 really quick, nearly exactly the same as 1.1.4 with a few bug fixes, so that people don't keep thinking that 2.0 is free and clear, and so iTunes doesn't keep prompting people to download the 2.0 free version.
Good thing Apple has our best intentions in mind. I was getting worried there. I thought that 2.0 leak was for real - just kidding. 1.1.5 is the next "real" Touch update.

Thanks for making me participate in "Best "first" basher". Oke here goes...
You know what's worse than posting a "first" comment. It's following it by a justification that you couldn't resist and trying to add something constructive to the topic.
It makes you look like a donkey with a monkey up his ass.

How does this bode for all the apple apologists who cite 'accounting reasons' for apple's money grabbing tactics regarding touch owners?
Andrew Harrison @ Jul 15th 2008 7:47PM
standard updates to the firmware are ok, as they don't add significant new features. major updates that add new features are not ok, as they weren't accounted for in the price.
that being said it's extremely annoying, and i'm rather glad the 2.0 firmware was leaked.
Ethan @ Jul 15th 2008 7:36PM
Maybe it has MobileMe support? Since they get money for that anyway...
Eli @ Jul 15th 2008 7:51PM
+5, Insightful.
andy @ Jul 15th 2008 7:37PM
they cannot change the device post purchase, as per the product was advertised without a nominal fee. iphone users pay a monthly bill.
Inugami @ Jul 15th 2008 7:37PM
Sorry but Apple is so yesterday psh, old news.
Erik @ Jul 15th 2008 9:20PM

Andrew @ Jul 15th 2008 7:39PM
at Tom:
The iPhone doesn't get it for free. People with the iphone pay every month to use their phone on top of whatever they paid to begin with. That was the idea of buying a phone and spending more, since there would be software updates.
And no, the new iphone still costs more than the ipod touch...it's just that ATT is paying for part of the phone when you sign a contract with them.
Why would apple put millions of dollars into developing new software updates for people who don't give them money on a monthly basis? Yeah, I understand you "paid all that money" up front or whatever, but you also paid that money up front to have an ipod...guess what, its still an ipod. Put your headphones in it and listen to your music.

G @ Jul 15th 2008 7:44PM
Think I'll stick to 2.0. Is there a good reason someone would want 1.1.5 instead of 2.0? Folks that prefer jailbreaking maybe..but 2.0 is already hacked, awaiting tool release
not sure I understand Apple's motive here at all.
James @ Jul 15th 2008 8:16PM
If you didn't want to shell out the $10 for 2.0.
2.0 > 1.1.5
You wouldn't want to revert to 1.1.5 if you already have 2.0

You don't have to shell out $10 to get 2.0.
Dan @ Jul 15th 2008 7:44PM
i agree tom.
charging for an update which allows access to the store where you would most likely spend a little money on games and programs is stupid. ill stick with my jailbreak 1.1.4 touch and get stuff for free.
if i wanted to play super monkey ball for $9.99 ill get a gamecube.
my girlfriends dad works for apple in newark, ca and he didnt even know they were charging for the update for the touch and disagrees with it.
mjonson @ Jul 15th 2008 8:08PM
in all fairness they told us well over a month ago they would be charging for it ... how can he not know this as an employee ?
ZeroCorpse @ Jul 16th 2008 1:42AM
I've got over 20 Apps from the App Store-- ALL free.
So please, try again.

"Why would apple put millions of dollars into developing new software updates for people who don't give them money on a monthly basis?"
What about all of the other free software updates that they spend millions of dollars on?
andres @ Jul 15th 2008 7:51PM
@ tom
well, what about them.
Tim Ficke @ Jul 15th 2008 7:52PM
They are free.
Erik @ Jul 15th 2008 8:02PM
hey tim, listen up.
Apple and other companies know what they're doing.
They have to charge for iPods cuz they're not on a monthly subscription.
It's an accounting thing, they have to do it so that the governent doesn't take a peek at their books and audit them.
So an apology for to apple would be nice.
Ant @ Jul 15th 2008 8:05PM
By the look of the Applications so far you might be best off with 1.1.5 firmware. Actually the 'remote play' application from Apple is worth the update but that's about it.
I think developers are missing the point of a micro payment environment, the payments are very small but you as a developer get lots of them, 20 or 30p a time by potentially over 8 million, that's a lot of cash. On the other hand £3 a time (or higher) and a couple of thousand downloads.
Just look at the iPod software on this device and then look at many of these applications, ow boy.
portwineboy @ Jul 15th 2008 9:37PM
Are you serious? There are some great apps out there. 2.0 is a must have.
Fozzy Bear @ Jul 15th 2008 8:12PM
@TomTom
you're name doesn't matter...
and you don't understand accounting...
if you did, you'd get why they have to charge.
way to waste the first post and the first reply to the first post.
