Motorola is a case in point. A bunch of stumbles and now it's dead as a cellphone company. Not even a shadow from what it was a few years ago. Same with Palm's past arrogance. A few bad years and now it's in the toilet. Times change and companies have to adapt.

No point in being smug about Nokia. Already the company's stock is being downgraded as we speak. There's more competition and less profits for Nokia. I don't think Nokia will fail by a longshot due to it's huge global sales, but it just can't sit back and think that because it's on top now, it will always stay that way. General Motors is a prime example of that. Fat, lazy and slow to adjust to changing times is not a good thing in a poor economy.

Steffen Jobbs

Comments on Nokia firms up touchscreen phone plans, says it will focus on 'mid-range' markets

On the contrary Nokia is doing superb currently and is the one that dosen't show any sign of weakness when SE and Samsung trumble on it's way when phone markets are giving signs of cooling. Thanks to the Nokia's position in emergin markets Nokia don't face these problems.
Moto was doing crappy for years and no one wasen't doing anything. I don't know how good it did show in USA years back, but Moto started it's fall way back here in Europe. Nokia dosen't have any sign of any bad times currently.

Like Eldar from Mobile-review have said Nokia's next years portfolio is dominant compared to example SE's that should be pushing some quality products currently.
Sure there's more competition now and that's great for us consumers, but i can't see anything that would hurt Nokia. They got by far the best place towards future.

Pdexter

Comments on Nokia firms up touchscreen phone plans, says it will focus on 'mid-range' markets

Nokia's stock has been up after todays announcment just because people had doubts how will Nokia do as phone markets where doubt to start cooling, but Nokia seems to not have affected of this so stock market seem to agree with me ;)

Pdexter

Comments on Nokia firms up touchscreen phone plans, says it will focus on 'mid-range' markets

Behind your broken English there is wisdom. There flagship phones are usually ahead of the pack to damn near it. What a ignorant comment. Now Nokia's interface is definitely not as nice or sleek as the iphone's and I don't expect this iteration to be, but as far as technology goes they have always been a leader. And they have announced they have plans for a flagship touchscreen device, though I'm sure they want to test out a mid range one first before and take care of issues or mistakes. For the emerging markets (who don't bother too much with Wifi or even basic data connectivity more often than not but look for the camera, and the integrated MP3 player software as the biggest attractions) Nokia can strip down the same mid-range phones (no wifi/3G) and the consumers will still be happy!

When it comes to Nokia, high-end and mid-range phone distinctions are rather blurry. the Nokia N81 if compared to the N95/N82 is supposed to be a mid-range phone. What does it lack? a lower camera (3.2 vs. 5MP with Carl Zeiss lens), no GPS (can be somewhat mitigated with A-GPS) and maybe a lower processor (although I think the N81 has a faster processor than an N82), may or may not have 3G (that's a toss-up... very few emerging markets have capable 3G networks anyway).

If you get really nit-picky, then Wifi might not be available. If Nokia's targeting the mid-range emerging markets (or intending their phones to essentially be entertainment devices), they will have multiple variants with spec options at different price points, allowing users to have a lot of choice.

And that is Nokia's business model. That's how they flood the market and how they are successful. I personally know a lot of people who've used Nokia phones and just cannot give it up for anything else! So, I believe that Nokia's major attraction is their previous design philosophy which concentrates on simplicity, which people like my dad and mom are very very happy with. Show them anything other than a Nokia and they cringe at how 'complex' it is to use.

Don't count Nokia out without giving them a year with their new product... Given the position they are in, they will certaintly not turn their plan upside down just because a newcomer released one single cool phone that most people in emerging markets can't afford (even though, Nokia did take notice of course).

And Nokia is very different from Motorola Mobile division. They have long been very capable of reinventing themselves, and if you take a look at what their strategy has been lately in terms of acquisitions an buy-outs, it seems that they are in the midst of reinventing themselves once again as a provider of content and information. I would hardly think a company that just acquired Navteq for $8 billion is on the verge of irrelevance. It would not be surprising to see Nokia move away from being a hardware manufacturer, and become more of a software/content/internet company, but this doesn't seem likely to happen any time soon.

And for those saying that Nokia makes mediocre phones, when the N95 was introduced 2 years ago, it had most of the features that the current iphone has (gps, 3g, wifi) and some that is still doesn't have (5mp camera with flash). So I would expect a new mid-market touchscreen phone to have very similar specs the the current iphone from a hardware standpoint. When it comes to the UI, that is a different story, and clearly companies like apple are ahead of the game. But I would much rather see Nokia take there time and release a thoughtful touchscreen UI for S60, rather than rush some iphone wannabe UI to market like many other companies have done (i.e. samsung instinct). It think its a good think that Nokia is taking their time, and trying to do things right. With as much market share as they command, they don't need to crap out some half baked idea in the next couple of months.

meggman

Comments on Nokia firms up touchscreen phone plans, says it will focus on 'mid-range' markets

I hope one of these touchscreen phones makes its way to CDMA / Sprint.
