Worlds collide: YouTube comes to TiVo
Just in case you weren't already watching enough YouTube at work and on your home computer, on your iPhone, Ocean, etc., or on your Apple TV, now TiVo's getting in on the action as well. Originally announced earlier this year, TiVo users can finally expect the update to pop over your TiVo's regularly scheduled updates over the next couple of weeks. Oh, and our man Dave Zatz shot some video of the new feature and put it up on (where else?) YouTube -- check it out after the break.

it's amazing how companies finally step up their products as soon as apple enters the game. Apple is like a market catalyst.
I'm not advertising the company, just being honest.
Paul Dullford @ Jul 17th 2008 7:53AM
Rather than Apple being a catalyst, I see YouTube popularising user-generated content over various avenues such as PC's (which include Macs) and phones (don't have to be iPhones -- in fact, I believe somehow Helio may be single-handsetedly responsible for the feature-filled consumer-level phones of today). This was going to come someday, Apple TV or not.
Rob @ Jul 17th 2008 9:36AM
I really think you're reaching. TiVo would have done this regardless of the iPhone. There is no causal relationship.
Hold McGroin @ Jul 17th 2008 9:46AM
No, you're a fanboy. Apple is overpriced, proprietary crap.
Sucks that your iPhone needs a Youtube client, my phone's web browser has native flash support so I can just load up youtube.com and watch videos. When is Safari getting that? Oh, right, never.
BluesK1d @ Jul 17th 2008 10:01AM
This post in no way is related to crApple. They didnt invent YouTube, the DVR, streaming video, or French toast. Why are gadget blogs, regardless of the post subject, the Mecca of elitist macboys?
Rob @ Jul 18th 2008 12:33AM
@Erik: Actually, I've been all Apple for almost 20 years. But I'm not a fanboy who blindly thinks Apple is the cause of all things good in the tech world.
@McGroin: What phone do you have that has native Flash support? Just curious... Wish the iPhone supported Flash... Also wish it could copy & paste.
S. Crawford @ Jul 18th 2008 5:40PM
Ya, I wish the iPhone had Flash and copy & paste and made sandwiches and reduced pollution and saved babies from fires and had teleporters etc. It's a PHONE, make your call and hang up. Why do people expect so much from it? Believe, Apple is FULLY aware of all these glitches including lack of Flash. Of course there's gonna be bugs the Phone has only been on the market for nearly a year and change, give it time, jeez. The UI and design is better than any phone on the market according to me and it works with ALL My apple stuff. I've had Treo's and Blackberrys. Iphone is best for me. Decide what's best for YOU. Go to your computer if you need to watch YouTube, WTH?!?!
Jiggy1 @ Jul 21st 2008 2:14PM
I can't wait until this time next when Apple makes everyone run out and buy the iPhone 3G Flash, and all the fanboys can blog about apple leading the charge for flash on phones.
I've had 3G on my Treo for a few years now and use Skyfire with full flash support. iPhone is cool, just not for me.
everchanging @ Jul 17th 2008 4:08AM
lmao ur not advertising apple, sweet pic of an iphone next to ur name. oh and i think youtube has been out for a while and tivo already has videos from break.com which is like youtube for guys with a 10yr old's sense of humor
SuperSexyErik @ Jul 17th 2008 4:39AM
I use the pic of the iPhone because the iPhone is amazing. But it's no secret that other companies fear apple, look how many phone companies are having to redo everything in their bussines just to keep up. Take rimm's stock for example (-40 pts)
Chris @ Jul 17th 2008 7:40AM
ha, well market values tend to sink a little bit when the economy slides. unless you are suggesting the iphone caused the economic slowdown? interesting idea...
Alexander @ Jul 17th 2008 9:21AM
iPhone sucks.
No Copy+paste - So it's not a business-class device. I use my HTC 6800 all day sending emails and copying and pasting between emails, word, excel, web pages, and txt's that I receive. Can't copy or paste on the iPhone.
Also has a built-in Terminal Services client, so I can remotely administer my servers if one goes down. Can't do that on the iPhone.
Also has the ability to receive picture messages reliably, and not require me to open a web browser to get at them. They download the same as any other message. That sucks on the iPhone.
And it uses a Mini-USB to charge, transfer files, and it is also the headset port. No proprietary connectors that cost $15 bucks here. That's not really good if you ask me.
Oh, and I can put an extended battery on there for when I know I am going to be away from my charger (which is any computer built in the last 10 years, so it doesn't happen often) that will make my phone last for something crazy like 10 hours of talking. Can't really do that with the iPhone at all can you? Sure, the battery is not soldered in now--but you have to void your warranty (or pay Apple) to have it replaced.
Oh sure... You supposedly can BUY things that make the iPhone do all that--or in some cases void your warranty--but my 6800 did all that when I bought it. You just paid $400 bucks for your iPhone, and it doesn't work all the way?
iPhone sucks. It is the Unreality Bubble around Stevie that makes you think other wise.
A1 @ Jul 17th 2008 5:21PM
Don't feed the troll.
Quikboy @ Jul 17th 2008 4:14AM
Now if only there could be a way to get YouTube on WMC...
whatishalo? @ Jul 23rd 2008 12:45PM
Or YouTube on BeyondTV
WilsonGoneWild @ Jul 17th 2008 5:15AM
Tivo's making it real hard for me to switch over to Xbox exclusively for digital content and for watching my podcasts. They are really making it easy. If they get hooked up with Netflix it's over (not that Amazon will have any of that).
Dave @ Jul 17th 2008 6:39AM
So I got the Summer update, but I still don't see this option. Is it going to be rolled out separately, or do I have something not configured correctly? This is on a TiVo HD.
Steffen Jobbs @ Jul 17th 2008 7:43AM
It would be nice if you can turn off that annoying bubble sound. I was never much of a Youtube watcher, but now with playlists you can gather a whole bunch of videos and play them automatically one after another which is really convenient. It's useful for me since there are people posting daily shows which is helpful.
Still, I divide my time among Youtube, QuickSilverScreen, Veoh, and Dailymotion. With all those services I'm bound to find something interesting. Youtube would have been a lot better if limits were larger, say a half hour and 200 MB for uploads. Now, an hour show has to be broken up into about eight parts which is ridiculous. Without using a continuous playlist it would be unbearable to watch.
Paul Dullford @ Jul 17th 2008 7:55AM
Yeah, it's so convenient when I need to watch entire walkthroughs of Half-Life 2 to live vicariously through other Half-Life 2 players.
No sarcasm intended. It really is a nice feature.
Geoffrey Sperl @ Jul 17th 2008 8:15AM
You mean the TiVo sound effects? You can turn that off - it's in the settings area.
Quicksilver4648 @ Jul 17th 2008 8:25AM
The Tivo is turning into a mini multimedia computer. Just add e-mail support and you'll be set.
Distortedloop @ Jul 17th 2008 9:18AM
Email without a keyboard...? Yuck!
AwlAmericanDawg @ Jul 17th 2008 11:48AM
@ Distortedloop
Nahh nahh, I'm pretty sure you can connect a USB keyboard.
Rob @ Jul 17th 2008 9:34AM
Come on, Engadget, aren't you going to mention that this capability won't be added to Series 2 (or Series 1) TiVos? I think you dropped the ball by not mentioning such relevant details.
TheManTheyCallJayne @ Jul 17th 2008 11:54AM
It won't be added to Series 2?? Where did you hear this?
Sucks if true. :(
Rob @ Jul 17th 2008 1:44PM
Hmmm, my reply didn't show up... Wonder if it's because I included a link and mention of Engadget's competition? Does Engadget filter posts that way???
TiVo's official press release says the YouTube service is only coming to Series 3. Google "tivo.com" and "youtube" to see it for yourself.
Rob @ Jul 17th 2008 1:45PM
Endgadget filter test: Gizmodo
Jay @ Jul 17th 2008 10:47AM
This is awesome now I can watch crappy cellphone video on my 50 inch HD LCD!!!!!!
So when is the internet browser & wireless keyboard coming out?
Could TiVo be one of the first companies to fulfill the rumor that Microsoft was going to license the guts of the 360 to other manufacturers? oooooo
shady @ Jul 17th 2008 11:47AM
That little nugget at the end was good news. The tuning adapter.
Jackson @ Jul 17th 2008 1:31PM
I hope that was a Seinfeld moment there in the title.
Doggerts @ Jul 17th 2008 2:40PM
Nice YouTube selection... Spiders on Drugs never gets old!
Gibson @ Jul 17th 2008 4:22PM
Since all the pirate content went in the pooper, so has YouTube. It's only useful for website-related video now, such as trailers and gadget reviews.
Shawn @ Jul 23rd 2008 5:15PM
I can't get away
From that sweet video
