Samsung reveals 50- / 58- / 63-inch 7 Series plasma HDTVs
Not a huge fan of the LCD HDTV? Is plasma more your style? Fantastic, because Samsung just took the (official) lid off of the already spotted 7 Series plasma lineup. Featuring the outfit's Touch of Color design, a 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, daytime / nighttime calibration options and a DNIe Pro video processor, this trio makes no bones about which rival it's gunning for. The entire crew also features InfoLink RSS access, a USB 2.0 port (WiseLink Pro), DLNA compatibility, four HDMI-CEC jacks and 1080p panels. Read up on the full rundown of specs in the read link, and prepare to hand over $2,799.99 for the 50-inch PN50A760, $4,499.99 for the 58-inch PN58A760 or $5,499.99 for the 63-inch PN63A760 sometime next month.

As cool as a 63 inch plasma is, I would have trouble justifying buying one for $5500 when you can get a 1080p projector for $500 less.

Wouldn't bother me any as I can put the plasma in a room that the window's aren't blacked-out and still be able to enjoy an image that's not washed out. Plus if I need to move the tv to another room, I just pick it up (with the help of a friend). I won't however, have to break out the hammer and crow bars to get my "screen" off the wall.

the projector is $500 less but then you have to spend quite a bit on the screen to get good color reproduction.

red? really?
High Ranks make you sterile @ Jul 23rd 2008 10:31AM
Samsung is a firecrotch.

Eh yea man...glad you came out of your coma. This is the Samsung "Touch of Color" series that people either love or hate. I have an A650 at home with the Touch of Color and I absolutely love it. The promo ads make it look far more red than it actually is.

The maroon makes it look old.
you would never hear someone say "Maroon is the new black!"
Kinger @ Jul 23rd 2008 10:27AM
It's more like a crimson. Think of that new special edition red DS that came out a bit ago. That was pretty hawt looking.
The Pepto Pimp @ Jul 23rd 2008 10:37AM
Crimson is great. Perfectly matches the accent color in the den.
bigdavy @ Jul 23rd 2008 3:03PM
Maybe your den. Not my den.
OneLove @ Jul 23rd 2008 11:12AM
plasma or lcd, which is better for HTPC usage?
rogers @ Jul 23rd 2008 11:26AM
You can get a 1080p projector for under $2500 now, but as mentioned, you would need a light controlled room to really enjoy it.
I have the 63" model that this one replaced and it is a fantastic tv.
Although the blacks are not quite as deep as on my 50" pioneer elite, it doesnt bother me in the least because you get no benefit from deeper blacks in a sunny room and my samsung plasma is much brighter than the pioneer. Works out better for my application.

my LE37A656 looks better imo.

I have a Samsung plasma from last years lineup (4254). I know Panasonic and Pioneer get a lot of love, and rightfully so, but the Samsung plasma's are quite nice as well. It's good to have choices.

Touching on what Mike said (yes, DyCR is a complete farse), the list of features/specs on these sets is unimpressive. My 2 year old Sammy HL-S5086W has all the same bells and whistles (albeit in 720p only) for about $800 (I paid $1200 2 years ago). For you DLP haters / Plasma lovers, we can all agree that DLP has given way to new, cheaper LCD and plasma. But the fact remains not a single person who comes to my house says anything other than "wow, your TV + DirecTV-HD" looks incredible (even people with their own HD sets).
Samsung and others need to stop spending their budget on silly things like this:

I'm sure there is a market out there (NY, SF lofts maybe) where rich douchebags will pay $3,000+ for a "pretty" $1,500 set, but surely it won't float Samsung's boat for very long. INNOVATE, YOU LAZY FUCKS!
I will be waiting until OLED becomes mainstream affordable and TV devs come up with next-generation features (120Hz and lower ms response was a start).
neal @ Jul 23rd 2008 2:09PM
blah i got a series 6 and thought it was the balls! now there is 7,8 & 9 blah i would say mine looks better as its curvy ^-
James @ Jul 23rd 2008 3:12PM
Better than last gen Kuro? Probably not.
NERV @ Jul 23rd 2008 3:22PM
so does this set do 120mhz and what's the response time

Can it really be that this beast is 11.5" deep?
