Nokia N85 hits FCC in two flavors, one with just a touch of North American 3G
We're still trying to figure out exactly how Nokia intends to position the N85 slider in its Nseries lineup, and frankly, the FCC documentation that's been outed for it isn't helping much. Seems there are two versions of the thing: one with no 3G -- likely for China -- and another with WCDMA on the 900, 1900, and 2100MHz frequencies. That little dose of 1900 in there will be enough to give owners partial access to 3G while out 'n about in the colonies, but by and large, the phone appears destined for Europe where 2100 (and to a lesser extent, 900) is the name of the game. Both do quadband EDGE, so at the very least, you'll be able to roam the better part of the globe and get some semblance of coverage -- just don't expect it to be particularly speedy everywhere you go. To be fair, Espoo's been getting pretty good about crafting special versions of its hottest handsets that are ripe for North American use, so we're not giving up hope just yet that there's a third version floating out there.

Oh wow.
I lol'd!
You are so goddamn funny, with the funny name, nice avatar and all, I'd like to be your best buddy some day!
Uh. Yes, I know it will work in those pockets where there is 1900 3G in the US, but right now that is a little part of Michigan, a little part Florida and some other place.
BOTTOMLINE: You need 850Mhz if you want 3G in the US.
Australia on the other hand is building out 3G on 900Mhz.
Wait sorry, 850Mhz is the 3G with pockets in the US. Telestra in Australia uses 850MHz so the phone will be useless for 3G on that network. For the US, however 1900MHz is the 3G band that AT&T uses everywhere.
So anyway, apart from that brain fart, this is great news! Finally a worldwide 3G Nokia (kind of)!
True that, ATT has stated in a press release, plans to copy (or move) 3G to 850. I think in most areas they would like to add a second channel, however not every where has enough spectrum for 2 channels of 3G...so just build more sites!
To make it more incompatible amongst different mobile providers...
Tmobile is launching their new 3G at 1700mhz.
Now AT&T can have a sigh of relief that Tmo customers aren't going to unlock their iPhones to use an incompatible iPhone 3G on Tmobile.
And Tmobile US Customers are stuck using Tmobiles lame assortment of 3G mobiles.
You're one of those kids that liked getting beat up in school because nobody liked you ay?
This kid has been doing it all day. Click through the last 4 or 5 stories on engadget you will see has posed "First!" on every one.
Can someone please ban him?
If you don't know much about cell phones and you start to buy and sell something you learn quick is that the 850mhz band is needed for att
Are you talking about GSM 850Mhz or WCDMA/UMTS 850Mhz? This phone is a quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900) and tri-band WCDMA (900/1900/2100) so there won't be any problem using it with AT&T GSM or WCDMA network. AT&T uses both GSM 850 and 1900 and mostly WCDMA 1900 however there are some areas with WCDMA 850.
Not bad at all :)
He actually got it...what with the comment system being amazing and all...
Well T-Mobile USA Customers, No N85 3G for you. AWS 3G will be hard for manufacturers to justify.
TEG
Will this work on T-Mobile. I think T-Mobile USA has 2100mhz band.
Why even bother including the US 3G bands? It's not like any of the carriers are going to pick up any of Nokia's decent smartphones.
Good point. However, I do think that part of the reason is to enable international 3G roaming for customers from Europe and Asia.
Is it only me...or are there other ppl also wishing this is the Nokia 5800/Tube and that Nokia is being secretive by naming it N85?
If you want Nokias touch device with N and E series features you need to wait till the end of this year(rumour is that it will be E77). It has been said by nokia that first S60 ts device will be mid phone and that's 5800(aka tube).
Hey Engadget, Euro 3G uses 1900/2100 for uplink/downlink, just like AWS (T-Mobile) 3G will 1700/2100. You sure that isn't what the N85 has?
Why would they put in 1900 3G for the Americas without putting in 850 as well...
Good one. Somebody has to be first, right?
Looks almost exactly like my N81 except without the Ngage buttons
So many mobile phone designers/manufacturers integrate quad-GSM/EDGE into their phones these days (as it always should be - seems to be the standard now). But I don't understand why they don't also integrate quad-3.5G, as well. They offer tri-band 3.5G, so they're almost there. And offering only dual-3.5 makes no sense (as HTC started to do).
Quad-3.5 should also just be standard now. I know that's a lot of bands, but manufacturers are almost there, and I have no reason to believe they can't add that last band.
All phones these days should be made that way, then we don't have to constantly address whether or how it'll operate in North Am and Europe. I just want to know it'll operate on all GSM/HSPA bands and speeds no matter where I go on either continent.
Making one version for N.A. and one for Europe and always having to address this issue is so tiring and boring many of us to tears. It reminds me of the "Is it going to have more than 64MB of RAM?" issue (which also got SO old - I thought companies would never step out of the past and expand the memory. It only took them forever to get a clue and begin doing it).
Manufacturers: Just make the phones quad/quad already and let's get on with the rest.
Need some thoughts please:
- N96 very expensive
- N95 almost old fashion now.
- iphone lacks dosen of things.
- N85 worth the wait?
