You can't have good 3D gaming without 2 analog sticks and yet they re-released the PSP lite still with just one.

The UMD was good for its day, but with all the space they shaved off, they didn't consider adding FORCE FEEDBACK to the PSP with two simple motors from a cell phone.

Then they don't bother adding an SSD drive, they add a little more onboard memory and just continue about their way.

The portable gaming market doesn't need to be king of convergence. Phones do a great job of that, and yet they don't need to be kings of gaming, either... IMO 'cause the masses don't demand it and 'cause those that do can go buy a separate device that does that task far better and at a sane price-point will far less compromise (battery life, form-factor, usability, cost).
