Man inexplicably brings touchscreen to the PSP
A certain jube808 has launched a quixotic quest to add a myriad of features to the PSP that he believes should've been there from the start, including beefed up battery life, a better control pad, and touchscreen support. Think what you will of his aims, he certainly seems to have some hardware chops, as he's got a touchscreen up and running on the handheld. So far he's just got a proof of concept keyboard, which works with a finger or a stylus, but the hope is to provide full touchscreen support for homebrew gaming. Let us know how that goes, jube. Videos are after the break.

The PSP needs dual analogs before it needs a touchscreen...
Flashpoint @ Aug 9th 2008 11:27PM
YOU BEAT ME TO IT !!!
The PSP's biggest problem is emulating the PS and the PS2 without having a controller that properly emulates the control available ont hose systems. We don't need R2, R3 and L2, L3 but the analog sticks themselves are a must.
Imagine having both sticks and getting Call of Duty4 on there !
I played Rainbow 6 Vegas on PSP and was disgusted. The game looked great but without being able to properly look around (right stick) it felt totally wrong.
As for the touchscreen...if your gonna take the PSP down the iPhone route, speed up the CPU and add more onboard memory including a 4GB (or better) NAND drive.
I think its fine time for a new PSP to be released while we wait for Xbox 720 and PS4.

Just get a Pandora. It has everything. http://openpandora.org
:)
Glenn @ Aug 10th 2008 12:31AM
There is a dual analog mod already out! Its called the Razor and its made by those guys on www.acidmods.com
jay.viz @ Aug 10th 2008 12:33AM

So I went to http://openpandora.org
but I didn't find a way to "Just get a Pandora."
OziD @ Aug 10th 2008 1:15AM
i found myself using the PSP for browsin the web more than playing games, to be honest.
would be nice to have the touchscreen for the keyboard... or something.
but i sold it and got an ipod touch. i woulda kept it but there wasn't many good games out at the time, i miss loco roco very much though :(
Carl M @ Aug 10th 2008 1:40AM
And if it gets a touchscreen, wouldn't it then need dual screens, since otherwise you won't see the action behind your fingers?
Hmm, dual screens. Someone should make a handheld like that...
PlopperZ @ Aug 10th 2008 2:19AM
@atomicthumbs
Why am I not surprised to see you here?
Yeah, buy a Pandora....whenever it's released.
A PSP touchscreen is useless, unless it's standard. I don't know why this guy went through the trouble.
liv @ Aug 10th 2008 9:32AM
If the PSPII will be all touchscreen then they will have a big problem with touch feedback. Maybe haptics will solve the problem but a dual analog, touchscreen PSP will rule. The UI is great. The device could have a better CPU and a SSD would be great. Put Bluetooth Object Push profile support in and you have a winner.

So is this thing a handheld video game device or a UMPC/netbook? From the specs, it sounds more like a netbook without a mouse and with hand held video game controllers to me...
Wwhat @ Aug 11th 2008 2:37AM
Openpandora sounds nice, except that nobody will develop games for it (it's 'open' after all), bit of a bummer to only have backgammon and solitaire on it I imagine.
tyj @ Aug 9th 2008 11:09PM
I think that he does this by putting the psp in usb host mide with an external usb enabled microcontroller (such as some if the PIC 18Fs or arduino) getting coordinates from the touchscreen. 1337 setup huh.

Excellent work! Finally, RTS gaming will be the way it was meant to be.
All we need now is an emulator running old PC Strategy games.
Bunson @ Aug 10th 2008 1:27PM
How about we use a PC to play PC games.
TareX @ Aug 10th 2008 2:05PM
Or, wiseguy, we can have a way to expand the PSP genre library by adding a practical way to play RTS games.
jon @ Aug 9th 2008 11:40PM
lets just say you all tied for first, how about that?
chris @ Aug 9th 2008 11:46PM
unfortunately that probably isnt good enough for them. i say fight to the death is a better idea
XIYL @ Aug 10th 2008 1:17AM
Only if they all die and the world is spared from their genetics.
AndrewAmazed @ Aug 9th 2008 11:52PM
the psp does not need touchscreen.
what would be the point of it?
for browsing the internet?
for viewing movies/pictures/music?
as previously said, i would much rather get dual analogs before getting a touchscreen...
jon @ Aug 10th 2008 12:04AM
why not have a touchscreen?
tekdroid @ Aug 10th 2008 1:47AM
have you ever tried typing on the PSP?
OCEAN 12 @ Aug 9th 2008 11:54PM

Kit @ Aug 10th 2008 9:33AM

Levi @ Aug 10th 2008 12:54AM
Not like this is a serious place for discussion, but...
If the PSP had an iPhone quality multitouch screen, and Sony didn't DEMAND that people use the touch screen features to death like Nintendo does with the Wii's feautres and DS's features, it could be pretty cool.
Puzzle games would benefit, RTS's would be awesome (can't wait for one of those to show up on the iPhone), selecting menus is better with a touch screen (like battle menus in FF for DS).
@ the other guys sayin we need a new PSP, I don't think we need an upgrade just yet... at least I don't want to pay for another hand held lol
james @ Aug 10th 2008 1:50AM
epic FAIL!
scott @ Aug 10th 2008 2:14AM
win.
Unknown @ Aug 10th 2008 8:45AM
This is ONLY for Homebrew and CFW PSPS.
Next version replaces (with) Analog.
Unknown @ Aug 10th 2008 8:49AM
And believe me,
HOMEBREW COMMUNITY makes atleast 20% of entire PSPs manufactured.
This man is going to be RICH, in a very short time.
aldrin @ Aug 10th 2008 8:49AM
haha!! HAHA LOOK CLOSELY AT THE DPAD WHILE HE PRETENDS ITS A TOUCH SCREEN. you can see a ghost of his fingers touching it the same time as he pretends to touch screen. just look closely. its a fake. haha you guys fell for it. he put two vids together.
Unknown @ Aug 10th 2008 8:54AM
Where? What time?
