Built-in breathalyzers haven't become quite the mainstay that many other features have in GPS units, but it looks like they're starting to become a bit more common, with AVMap only the latest to debut a navigator that promises to tell you if you're fit to drive or not. Apparently, its new Geosat 6 Drive Safe navigator is a standalone version of the built-in option that was available on Peugot's 107 "Sweet Years" edition car, with it boasting the same 4.8-inch touchscreen, built-in Bluetooth, and text-to-speech features as before. No word on a price just yet, unfortunately, and it seems safe to assume that this one will only be available in Europe.

The problem with these devices are that repsonsible people would use them. Most likely if your responsible enought to buy a GPS with a breathalyzer your smart enough to have a DD or call a cab...
seriously, when is the last time some drunk said, "lets let this machine tell me if I'm to drunk to drive home" Alcohol will make you more confident (hence the reason people drink to pick up women, more self confident) and less likely to listen to this thing

Absolutely. Pretty pointless unless it's mandatory for all units... And surely few people would attempt the kind of long distance driving you'd need satnav for while drunk, anyway? Or am I missing out on something?
I think I will give these to a few women I know for Christmas, but first I need to fix it so it routes them to my house when drunk.

This thing doesn't actually measure your blood/alcohol level, it just spots the drunks by getting them to blow at a small hole, while patting your head and rubbing your stomach.. chances are you would royally screw that one up!

I agree with you in theory, but in a lot of places DUI is set pretty low. In fact for some people one drink might set them over the limit depending on weight, how much they ate etc. The only way to KNOW you're legal is to not drink AT ALL.
There aren't many reliable ways for the average person to test themselves. I'm guessing that in the US, bars don't want to have a machine because then they might be responsible if their machine says you're ok (below .08 in most places) but you crash on the way home "the bar said I wasn't drunk".
The technology to do a simple check for "I FEEL ok, but am I LEGALLY ok to drive" has been around but not implemented. You can't just walk up to a cop and ask for a field sobriety test (well you can), if you fail the test he'll cite you for drunk in public.

why would anyone buy this...is there a purpose to having the breathalyser, other than to tell me i've been drinking...which hopefully i should already know?
You might not know exactly how many units you'd had and hence if you were over the limit or not. It's not to tell you if you're drunk, it's to tell you if you're TOO drunk
haha i guess...i could see this being used for insurance discounts or something, but the people who already drive drunk aren't going to spend the money and purposely use this
I can see it for someone who drinks a bit but doesn't get hammered, and wants to make sure that if they're stopped for something else they're not over the limit

So I wonder if the device defaults to "you shouldn't drive" if they don't blow were the arrow is pointing. Since how many drunks do you know that will/can read and follow directions?
It's an intermediate technology to be certain. When it can use GPS to drive your drunk ass home, then we'll all be saying, "ooh, that's really nice."

if you blow over the legal limit it should route you to your location on side streets and streets that police are less likely to be on

So how do they know when the driver is actually breathing on the device and not a sober passenger? (Although that raises the question of why the drunk person is driving if a sober person is there... kids maybe? ew)

This is actually pretty damn cool. I think everyone should adopt this on their GPS units. I'm actually thinking of picking up a breathalyzer because frankly .08 is hard to gauge, esp if someone isn't a heavy drinker and doesn't know where .08 is. I play things carefully but *shrugs* You never know. Miss dinner and have a drink or have a drink that was more potent then you though and you could easily hit .08
