AVMap intros breathalyzer-equipped Geosat 6 Drive Safe navigator

Built-in breathalyzers haven't become quite the mainstay that many other features have in GPS units, but it looks like they're starting to become a bit more common, with AVMap only the latest to debut a navigator that promises to tell you if you're fit to drive or not. Apparently, its new Geosat 6 Drive Safe navigator is a standalone version of the built-in option that was available on Peugot's 107 "Sweet Years" edition car, with it boasting the same 4.8-inch touchscreen, built-in Bluetooth, and text-to-speech features as before. No word on a price just yet, unfortunately, and it seems safe to assume that this one will only be available in Europe.

Woah! Yeah, if they bring that to the US...I'll buy it and be the first person to sue for sexual harassment when that pops up on the screen!

YOU JUST RUINED MY POSTING WITH SOMETHING REGARDING THAT D@MN PHONE! I hope someone shoves an iPhone in you sideways.

Speaking of sexual harassment, anyone else notice that "Geosat" can also be used to spell "Goatse"?
Coincidence? I THINK NOT.

Robocop says, "Blow me".
Benson @ Aug 15th 2008 4:16PM
Dude,
Definitely. Indeed, my undercaffeinated brain read it as such at first glance. Went something like:
"AVMap intros breathalyzer-equipped Goatse -- WTF?!?!?!"
iEye @ Aug 15th 2008 1:29PM
POI = in 300 meters turn right on Bourbon Street and arrive at your destination....
From My Cube @ Aug 15th 2008 1:29PM
The problem with these devices are that repsonsible people would use them. Most likely if your responsible enought to buy a GPS with a breathalyzer your smart enough to have a DD or call a cab...
seriously, when is the last time some drunk said, "lets let this machine tell me if I'm to drunk to drive home" Alcohol will make you more confident (hence the reason people drink to pick up women, more self confident) and less likely to listen to this thing
not to mention if you had to type in an adress, doubt this thing can read drunkanese
Hawkman @ Aug 15th 2008 3:01PM
Absolutely. Pretty pointless unless it's mandatory for all units... And surely few people would attempt the kind of long distance driving you'd need satnav for while drunk, anyway? Or am I missing out on something?
getStringFromObj() @ Aug 15th 2008 1:34PM
I think I will give these to a few women I know for Christmas, but first I need to fix it so it routes them to my house when drunk.

Finally some real humor! Seriously not being sarcastic.
tobias @ Aug 15th 2008 1:35PM
This thing doesn't actually measure your blood/alcohol level, it just spots the drunks by getting them to blow at a small hole, while patting your head and rubbing your stomach.. chances are you would royally screw that one up!
MadMike @ Aug 15th 2008 1:36PM
Is drunk driving that much of an issue in Europe or is this just a niche thing?
GhettoBanjo @ Aug 15th 2008 1:38PM
how drunk would have to be for your farts to register on this?
seriously.

I agree with you in theory, but in a lot of places DUI is set pretty low. In fact for some people one drink might set them over the limit depending on weight, how much they ate etc. The only way to KNOW you're legal is to not drink AT ALL.
There aren't many reliable ways for the average person to test themselves. I'm guessing that in the US, bars don't want to have a machine because then they might be responsible if their machine says you're ok (below .08 in most places) but you crash on the way home "the bar said I wasn't drunk".
The technology to do a simple check for "I FEEL ok, but am I LEGALLY ok to drive" has been around but not implemented. You can't just walk up to a cop and ask for a field sobriety test (well you can), if you fail the test he'll cite you for drunk in public.

"Now lizzzen here... i'm not.. . i'm not drrrunk. zzsttop yer damn beepin. You think... YOU THINK you know me, but you dont... why dont, why don't YOU BLOW on THE POINT... my point... heh ehe ehe... I hav ... I have a point that zzzyou can blow on... I kin drr-drr- I kin drive, Im'm not drink... i'm not drunk... "
Josh @ Aug 15th 2008 2:29PM
why would anyone buy this...is there a purpose to having the breathalyser, other than to tell me i've been drinking...which hopefully i should already know?
Phoenix @ Aug 15th 2008 2:33PM
You might not know exactly how many units you'd had and hence if you were over the limit or not. It's not to tell you if you're drunk, it's to tell you if you're TOO drunk
Josh @ Aug 15th 2008 2:43PM
haha i guess...i could see this being used for insurance discounts or something, but the people who already drive drunk aren't going to spend the money and purposely use this
Phoenix @ Aug 15th 2008 2:48PM
I can see it for someone who drinks a bit but doesn't get hammered, and wants to make sure that if they're stopped for something else they're not over the limit
timmer @ Aug 15th 2008 2:43PM
Oh right this is going to do a lot. Unless the GPS is somehow tied into the ignition system, this does nothing.
Mental Issues @ Aug 15th 2008 2:45PM
In Soviet Russia, GPS navigator blows you. Is much more fun, ya?
Benson @ Aug 15th 2008 4:21PM
Yes, It's my turn to be "that guy".
I believe you meant to say "da", unless, of course, you were pretending to be a Deutsche-bag, in which case it's spelled "ja", but pronounced as you've written it.
/me prepares for impending low-ranking.
getStringFromObj() @ Aug 15th 2008 5:03PM
We had one of those, I believe she was called an "interpreter"
AlphaTeam @ Aug 15th 2008 3:03PM
So instead of the DMV putting this in for DUI offenders, they expect people to buy this themselves?
kal326 @ Aug 15th 2008 3:35PM
So I wonder if the device defaults to "you shouldn't drive" if they don't blow were the arrow is pointing. Since how many drunks do you know that will/can read and follow directions?
Jason @ Aug 15th 2008 3:50PM
It's an intermediate technology to be certain. When it can use GPS to drive your drunk ass home, then we'll all be saying, "ooh, that's really nice."
mlody11 @ Aug 15th 2008 3:59PM
It should simply say, blow me.
meadtwad @ Aug 15th 2008 4:15PM
if you blow over the legal limit it should route you to your location on side streets and streets that police are less likely to be on
Technex @ Aug 15th 2008 6:03PM
I'm afraid I can't let you drive this car.
dreamscape86 @ Aug 15th 2008 6:41PM
Yeah, because the average drunk driver is totally going to stop and think, "What ho! I've been pouring on a bit of the sauce, eh? Perhaps I should check my Geosat 6 Drive Safe Navigator to see if I am sober enough! If not, I shall just climb back out of the car and dial a cabby! Jolly good..."
Jason @ Aug 15th 2008 8:02PM
See how that crap makes me so glad I'm not a brit.
Peter Harris @ Aug 15th 2008 9:51PM
So how do they know when the driver is actually breathing on the device and not a sober passenger? (Although that raises the question of why the drunk person is driving if a sober person is there... kids maybe? ew)

This is actually pretty damn cool. I think everyone should adopt this on their GPS units. I'm actually thinking of picking up a breathalyzer because frankly .08 is hard to gauge, esp if someone isn't a heavy drinker and doesn't know where .08 is. I play things carefully but *shrugs* You never know. Miss dinner and have a drink or have a drink that was more potent then you though and you could easily hit .08
