Philips readying ultrathin 42-inch Essence TV for IFA debut?

Let's be honest -- it's been quite awhile since Philips has been seen as a big-shot in the world of HDTVs. Evidently the company is aiming to change all that in just a few weeks, as a fresh rumor puts a stunning new set on display at IFA. Reportedly, the lightweight 42-inch Essence TV will boast a 38-millimeter depth and will be made for wall hanging. Regrettably, that's all the details that have seeped out thus far, but we'll be finding out just how much truth there is to all of this in a fortnight.

It says AOL on the comment system, does this mean its going to be unreliable?

Why do we go for thin panels? Makes them less rigid, why not higher pixel density or better power consumption?

Technology just keeps getting better - thinner screens, better picture quality, lower prices (eventually). Can't wait till a full theater experience (without the annoying people) can be easily simulated at home - note I said easily.

If it comes with wireless HDMI that would totally rock.

I, for one, will never buy an HDTV meant for the wall. If I want my TV on the wall then I'll get a projector. So much useful storage space is built into some nice Entertainment centers that I would rather have in my living room than a table beneath a TV which hangs on the wall.

Off topic:

I like the new comment system. My appreciation has nothing to do with AOL, however.

My only wish is that the checkboxes below which say "Remember me" and "E-mail me...." would actually remember the last settings that I used. I find myself repeatedly un-checking the second box.

Amerist, If I understand your comment correctly, You are thinking that mounting a TV on the wall still means AV equipment is going to be stored around it. Fyi, all my AV equipment is in a closet. The only thing in my viewing area is the TV on a wall, the hdmi cable is routed to my closet where all cable, media play and PS3 are hdmi switch. IR is routed from a pickup in the room to the closet. My speakers are in-wall too. I think the solution rocks. Cheers,

An lampless led-based dlp projection system would be coming out by the end of the year. It would have a very high-contrast ratio 500,000:1 and have a very wide color gamut, and with 200 trillion colors.
