The silly shoe insert is just an accelerometer. I assume this app won't need the nike+ hardware, since the iPhone has an accelerometer built in. And yeah, it could use the GPS if available for increased accuracy when actually in motion, but it'd probably drain the heck out of your battery.

Personally, I’m curious about the music playback and status voiceover portion of the app. The original nike+ iPod app would interface with the music on the device, but iPhone apps are sandboxed and there’s no API to talk to the iPod app (to control playback, get a list of songs, etc.). I wonder if Apple’s given them special access, or if they’ve come up with another method on their own (like making you add a copy of the music you want to hear during a run outside of iTunes).

Rick Fletcher

Comments on Screenshots of iPhone Nike+ running app emerge, we're out of breath already

There is zero chance this would use the iPhone's accelerometer as you'd have to secure it pretty much down on your shoe or ankle.

It's not as if the Nike+ insert is expensive though - I think the Nike+iPod kit went for something like ~$30?
