Apple introducing new iPods on September 9th?
There's been a lot of iPod chatter in the air lately and now MacRumors and Ars Technica say that we'll be seeing El Steve boom-boom some new gear on September 9th. No specifics on what's in store, but new nanos are obviously on the table, as is that rumored subscription service and possibly a new iPod touch at a lower price. Anything you guys hoping for?

I'd like to see an iPod touch with Skype.
Jay @ Aug 25th 2008 9:24PM
I want to see that as well,
I'm still torn between waiting on the archos 5 or getting the new itouch.
If the itouch supported skype, I'd definitely swing towards getting the itouch...
Bender Bending Rodriguez @ Aug 25th 2008 9:45PM
You do realise that Skype has no barring on new HW, right. If Skype decides to add it to the iTunes App Store it will be available for both the iPhone and iPod Touch
computer.dude.28 @ Aug 25th 2008 9:55PM
@Bender Bending Rodriguez
You mean if *Apple* decides to add it to the app store. I don't think Skype will be holding it from the devices, it'll be the carriers and Apple keeping it from the store.
Backlin @ Aug 25th 2008 10:09PM
The phone carrier of choice may have an issue letting Skype through.
phrozunsun @ Aug 25th 2008 10:40PM
@bender
almost, but not quite. homebrew skype was in beta last i heard. still though, ipod touch apparently has no mic.
jimmy @ Aug 25th 2008 10:48PM
maybe for the iPhone, but there's (currently) no way to speak into the iPod Touch, is there?
Bender Bending Rodriguez @ Aug 26th 2008 12:36AM
@ all,
The SDK rules already forbid VoIP from running over cellular networks. Skype would have to be run using WiFi if it were to be allowed. Apple's rules don't forbid this type of usage so it's up to Skype.
=glu @ Aug 26th 2008 2:26AM
I'm hesitant to believe that Apple would make the risky of move of subverting the voice services which the telco's are ferociously unwilling to give up. It took Apple a long time to wean the record labels off haterade...
thequinox @ Aug 26th 2008 3:06AM
This is the problem with buying something like the iPhone, it's so closed and controlled. With a phone running a real OS like WinMobile or Android YOU the consumer can decide what you want on YOUR phone.
Khattab @ Aug 26th 2008 2:29AM
New MacBooks, MacBook Pros, updated MacBook Air.
drumdbeat @ Aug 25th 2008 9:08PM
Hopefully not that ^^^
Ruben @ Aug 25th 2008 9:11PM
Don't worry, on Sept 9th, that exact device will magically look amazing.
Christian @ Aug 25th 2008 9:22PM
I don't like that ipod nano.
@Ruben
I think you're right though, once el jobso intros it. It will magically look beautiful
Will H. @ Aug 25th 2008 9:44PM
I agree, the picture above does look pretty ugly. If they are releasing a new nano, surely it wouldn't be that ugly. If all apples were ugly, would so many people buy them?
xValentine @ Aug 25th 2008 9:46PM
I can still remember the time where the fat nano has been leaked.
People went "Oh, that's ugly", "FAKE", "do not want", etc..
but after 2-3 weeks, Apple updates their website and shows the exact fat nano. And when it hit the stores, people went "wow nice", "very cute", "do want!", etc..
But still, if that thing right there is true, then I'm kinda disappointed. I love the fat nano's shape and size :(
Wiigee @ Aug 25th 2008 10:12PM
@Ruben once we find out its made from a new light as air alloy and is only 1oz, we will love it. oh and im sure they will jump on the "go green" greenwash bandwagon somehow.
anthony @ Aug 25th 2008 10:14PM
@xValentine
I still think the current gen Nano is ugly and very difficult to hold in your hand. The first gen was the best so far.
Breeze @ Aug 25th 2008 10:25PM
once a few of these devices are spread across the apple.com front page in different colors,,, we all will be drooling over this nano.
phoomp @ Aug 25th 2008 11:06PM
If Jobs introduced the Brown Zune, the faithful would be all over Microsoft for copying such an amazing design an innovative choice of colour.
Eh @ Aug 25th 2008 11:07PM
Considering Apple hasnt brought out their legal department over this picture I doubt this is real (Apple was all over the last nano fatty leaks, since those were actually real).
Jon Graft @ Aug 25th 2008 11:31PM
Replying to "Eh"
Maybe Apple is learning from their past mistakes. They know if they let the dogs lose on this (legal dept) then people will clearly know it is legit.
Elliott @ Aug 25th 2008 11:37PM
Agree. I really hope it's not that ugly thing.
konshuss @ Aug 26th 2008 12:17AM
if this is Thinking Different, the R&D must be located at a 'Special' facility.
JJV @ Aug 26th 2008 3:13AM
didn't R&D catch fire? maybe htey lost everything and threw this in last minute so jobsy wouldnt roast them on a spit. =) lol
nDee @ Aug 26th 2008 6:20AM
That is the actual reason why it caught fire.
Brandon @ Aug 25th 2008 9:10PM
being first.... to buy a new macbook.
Tim @ Aug 25th 2008 9:09PM
How about the aluminum macbooks? I don't know if that rumor was squashed yet, but if not maybe we'll see it's introduction as well.
Sean @ Aug 25th 2008 9:24PM
If they introduce aluminum macbooks I may have to buy my first mac.
Justin E @ Aug 25th 2008 9:09PM
Push notification for Gmail on the iPhone - like yesterday
Bender Bending Rodriguez @ Aug 25th 2008 9:47PM
This is a blog about an event to introduce new HW and you are talking about something that Google would have to implement???
theDude @ Aug 25th 2008 10:03PM
It already has it. Even my iPod Touch checks every 15 minutes and beeps when a new email arrives from gmail.
Bender Bending Rodriguez @ Aug 25th 2008 10:13PM
@ theDude,
By Push, he means that the 15 minutes auto-checking it turned off and you get your mail pushed from Gmail servers to your device immediately without constantly checking for it.
theDude @ Aug 25th 2008 11:10PM
Thanks for clarification. Bet that would save battery power too.
Kamokazi @ Aug 25th 2008 9:10PM
A retirement speach and dismantling of the company?
Yes, Mr. IhaveNoSenseOfHumor, the [-] button is in the top right.
LordFarkward @ Aug 25th 2008 9:29PM
Wow, good one, you've pre-empted your -ve votes... now I'm in such a dilemma... should I vote you down because it wasn't even funny or should I vote you up cuz I don't wonna be coined Mr. IhaveNoSenseOfHumor...
Actually, the real dilemma is if I should vote you down because of "speach" or because of the non-funny "joke"... hmmmmmm
bawalter1 @ Aug 25th 2008 10:26PM
@ Lord
I have always found it very entertaining that Engadget does not show the people that have earned scores so low as to deem them the "Lowest ranked".
Here's the my dilemma, do I vote you down even though it won't show you most lacking in social skills? Or do I vote you up because you think yourself witty.
Now, about September 9th... New Mac Mini that's worth the price?
Dragod @ Aug 25th 2008 9:11PM
Looks top heavy. But honestly, I don't care; iPods are just iPods. Nothing epic ever really changes and makes me want one. The firmware on the device itself is ugly and annoying to use, and the computer software is the same.
I'd rather see the iPod get away from its plain and simple style, and see a colorful and exciting new iPod.
I love my Zune to death, but I'm sick of seeing the boring look of the iPod.
ngamer007 @ Aug 25th 2008 9:14PM
You're going to get down voted only because any mention of a DAP other than the iPod in an Apple post is heresy. I'd personally love to see a capacitive multi-touch based Zune come out. Competition will get these companies moving, besides "touch screens" there hasn't been any huge innovations in years.
Ruben @ Aug 25th 2008 9:17PM
@clak:
Oh you mean the gutted iPhone?
499 for less than half the space of a Zune 80 (or even the Classic 80) and only average audio quality compared to the Zune?
I must have missed the sarcasm in your comment.
Mike10010100 @ Aug 25th 2008 9:22PM
It's funny that you mention capacitive touch screens.
Did you ever think of how the Mighty Mouse knew which side of the mouse you had your finger on? Apple has been experimenting with making capacitive touch screens more affordable and rugged for years, slowing incorporating them into their products.
Oh and sorry if you wasted your time trying to find sarcasm in clak's post. He just posts hyperlinks a lot. Every one is either about the iPod touch or iPhone.
Serial 8-Ball Mouse @ Aug 25th 2008 9:24PM
@Ruben
Please don't argue with clak. Now he is going to reply with something and it's going to make everyone wish they were incapable of reading.
steven @ Aug 25th 2008 9:26PM
Welcome back clak! We missed you! (not)
Dragod @ Aug 25th 2008 9:27PM
Honestly, I don't see the allure of the iPhone and iPod touch. I've seen plenty of other devices that are many times more useful than the iPhone, and no touch screen. Honestly, touch screens are exactly what I don't want to see in a device. I've never liked fingerprints on my devices so when I got a Moto KRZR (I think it's a piece of crap compared to my old Kyocera Slider Remix) I couldn't stand the smudges on the glossy finish, not to mention the screen. I imagine a touch screen device is 30x worse. What happens when you ruin the screen because it gets scratched or worn away? I just don't like touch screens; nothing beats tactile feedback.
Plus, I've used the iPod Touch. I wasn't impressed.
Dragod @ Aug 25th 2008 9:29PM
Also, sorry if my posts are a little scattered. I'm feeling really out of it right now.
Jack @ Aug 25th 2008 9:40PM
Even though clak somehow hasnt said anything annoying in this post i still down ranked him, just because of previous expriences.
THJ @ Aug 25th 2008 9:41PM
For someone so unimpressed with the iPod, you sure do talk about it a lot.
Bender Bending Rodriguez @ Aug 25th 2008 9:59PM
@ Dragod
I'm glad we have so many different devices to fit so many needs. I'm curious what features in the Zune attracted you to it?
Regarding the screen, the only time you see fingerprints is when the screen is off. The screen is very bright and the optical quality glass is very dense so scratches don't occur like they do with plastics. That said, the Zune isn't a bad device at all, it's not preference as I wanted a to consolidate a PMP, MID and phone which the iPhone supplies, but if the Zune fits your needs go for it.
LMLYP @ Aug 25th 2008 10:21PM
and which one of those jackoffs are you clak?
steven @ Aug 25th 2008 10:47PM
"and which one of those jackoffs are you clak?"
Probably Bender Bending Rodriguez. Not as big of a fanboy, but a blind Apple fanboy for sure.
