Gampark's GP2X Wiz handheld now available
We caught a glimpse of GamePark's new Wiz GP2X / GP3X handheld a month or so back, and the homebrew-friendly black-and-red unit is now available. $179 of your American dollars is all it takes to enjoy the 2.8-inch QVGA OLED screen, 533MHz ARM9 processor, 64MB of RAM, 16GB of flash, and 5 hour battery life -- not to mention a Flash 7 player, MPEG4, xViD and DivX compatibility and new games scheduled to hit every month. Dynamism say these'll start shipping on October 8th -- anyone throwing down?

if i get that, i wouldn't have to homebrew my PSP anymore. then, i can actually use my PSP to play PSP games!
ybd @ Aug 26th 2008 5:16PM
To play what?
Nate @ Aug 26th 2008 12:58PM
With Pandora around the corner, I don't see much point in throwing anymore money at GPH... especially when it appears that they still can't get the controls right.
Zebarnabe @ Aug 26th 2008 1:04PM
Indeed, unless you can't wait for it. I also hope Pandora controls will work fine .__.''
BigD145 @ Aug 26th 2008 1:06PM
Pandora was "around the corner" back in March.
Nate @ Aug 26th 2008 1:20PM
It's not like it's the first piece of electronics to get delayed. This happens all the time, especially with game systems.
Tiptup300 @ Aug 26th 2008 3:34PM
The pandora is going to be epic win.
BigD145 @ Aug 26th 2008 3:40PM
Yes, but you say "around the corner" as if it meant something. You might as well just say, "It may not be worth it to spend two Benjamins now when I can spend three or four in the next 365+ days."
Nate @ Aug 26th 2008 4:36PM
The point is that the community is moving on to bigger and better things. This is a niche product, and the market it's targeted at has its sights set on bigger things, no matter what the price and release date are. I don't think there are many people left, holding their breath, waiting for the next generation GP2X.
I say this as someone who's thrown his money at GPH products in the past, including the last generation GP2X, and will be sitting this one out. If this machine had come out instead of the f200, it may have been a winner. The homebrew/emu climate has changed in the past year, and this device just doesn't fly.

Digital1 @ Aug 26th 2008 1:00PM
Not bad. ;-)
Rollins @ Aug 26th 2008 1:01PM
The problem is that Pandora's way too expensive for the average gamer. While I agree that the controls of this look lacking, they might feel better than they look. The other specs are very good, however, along with the fact that porting GP2x games will be simple. OLED screen. :)
Rollins @ Aug 26th 2008 1:06PM
Meant as a response to Nate, by the way.
I have to say that it was a bad mistake to build the unit with only two shoulder buttons. This machine's more than capable of emulating PS1 games, but it doesn't have enough buttons. Sad.
Nate @ Aug 26th 2008 4:41PM
I don't think the average gamer gives a crap about the Wiz or the Pandora. They're perfectly happy with their DSs and PSPs.
These devices aren't made for the average gamer. These are made for people who like to get their hands dirty.
Tiptup300 @ Aug 26th 2008 11:59PM
The above average gamer.
Chris @ Aug 28th 2008 9:11PM
Abso-fucking-lutely!
eric @ Aug 26th 2008 1:03PM
I love this, but... two D-Pads?
How the hell is that functional at all?
avester @ Aug 26th 2008 1:10PM
If you want to play with your friend, you could have 2 controllers?
And you guys thought that wireless controllers for 360 and PS3 were the invention of satan.
Chris @ Aug 26th 2008 1:13PM
With the stylus it looks like it could be a touch screen...righty or lefty friendly d-pads. I may be completely wrong though...
avester @ Aug 26th 2008 1:15PM
Nah, It's probably just a pen, I've always hated when consoles don't have pens integrated.
Mustaine @ Aug 26th 2008 1:28PM
Games like 'Smash TV'
konshuss @ Aug 26th 2008 1:09PM
i have a nice pmp, so caring that it can play videos is out.
it's way bigger than my mp3 player, so forget that.
i'm also pretty sure these games that are supposed to be coming out might be out shined by a couple of companies called nintendo and sony.
probably skipping this one...
BigD145 @ Aug 26th 2008 1:07PM
Is there some advantage to this versus the GP2X F-200, which is $169?
BigD145 @ Aug 26th 2008 2:12PM
I'm really hating that data/power connection.
wootman @ Aug 26th 2008 9:29PM
erm, the processing power?
really that hard to find?
Chip @ Aug 26th 2008 1:18PM
Dynamism says it has 1GB of internal flash storage, not 16GB.
Christian @ Aug 26th 2008 1:21PM
I will keep an eye to this gadget just not sure what games will come out of it... I guess it's better than the other handheld that died...
Like the fact that it has OLED but we'll wait and see how the quality is.
Mustaine @ Aug 26th 2008 1:28PM
Games like 'Smash TV'
Riley @ Aug 26th 2008 1:41PM
I think I'd rather have a PSP with custom firmware for the same price. It has better controls for playing my old Lucas Arts adventure games and plenty of accessories available.
Ravnos @ Aug 26th 2008 9:47PM
Not that I'm screaming for this thing myself, but care to explain how a device with a touch screen has worse controls for point-and-click adventures than the PSP?
Chris @ Aug 26th 2008 1:50PM
OLED screen FTW!
SteveJ @ Aug 26th 2008 2:42PM
I hope that the buttons on the right aren't really a d-pad and instead are 4 separate buttons. Otherwise, I think this looks nice.
Pandora looks great, of course, but over $300 for a device that will primarily have emus, ports of Quake and Doom, tired rehashes of long existing games and uber-crappy "originals"? Pandora has a "who's who" of homebrew developers on board, which essentially means that that is exactly what it will get, and that's not worth $300 IMHO. In fact, the GP2X Wiz isn't worth it's asking price either. If it were under $50 I'd consider it.
wootman @ Aug 26th 2008 5:38PM
you could at least google the thing your whining about.
The pandora will have firefox, ps1, and probably n64 emulation.
Lakritzator @ Aug 26th 2008 2:46PM
Looks very much like the Archos GMini series 400... like here: http://www.mobilewhack.com/images/archos.jpg
Pumping_Iron @ Aug 26th 2008 3:02PM
ARM9 processor.....isn't it the one that can run Android or linux operating systems????
If yes...then 533Mhz is fine for Damn Small Linux....
Ryan @ Aug 26th 2008 4:47PM
You do realize that the GP2X OS is linux based?
Pumping_Iron @ Aug 26th 2008 4:54PM
Yeah i know that....but what im saying is that is it possible to install another linux distribution or android.... ?
Itsuru @ Aug 26th 2008 3:14PM
Any news on a UK release?
DiGiC @ Aug 26th 2008 3:31PM
I think this is a bit of a step backwards all things considering
Nate @ Aug 26th 2008 4:38PM
I don't know that it's a step backwards. But, it's hardly a step forward.
Drackbolt @ Aug 26th 2008 4:14PM
People, this is a handheld emulation box. Virtually everything is already available for it. That's where its chief virtue lies, not as a standalone platform. :)
The Wiz @ Aug 26th 2008 4:58PM
I'm the Wiz, and nobody beats me...
Atanas Boev @ Aug 26th 2008 5:02PM
um, the title says "gampark"...
kingu @ Aug 29th 2008 1:31PM
While it should be "Gamepark Holdings" I wont do the story, as it has been told too many times. Infact it must soon reach the mind of engadget that Gamepark is out of business and that GPH is another company.
gadjitfreek @ Aug 26th 2008 5:10PM
Looks nice, but...ah...no.
icurafu @ Aug 26th 2008 7:36PM
Hmm, I don't think the device deserves to be more expensive than the GP2X. But I like the people at GPH so I'll probably grab one once there is a solid foundation of homebrew.
y2kss66 @ Aug 26th 2008 8:02PM
I might buy this is they added a wifi chip but that won't happen so here i come pandora!
y2kss66 @ Aug 26th 2008 8:04PM
They need to fix the abyx buttons
wolf @ Aug 27th 2008 1:56AM
holding out for pandora myself- I will pre-order on day one if I can get in
thedesolate1 @ Aug 27th 2008 2:05AM
5 hour battery life!?
