Unfortunately in the intervening period Nokia have failed to take any major steps forward with the possible exception of totally acquiring an OS writer that they owned the majority of anyway, announced the N96 in February yet inexcusably delayed release until August to October (mainly so they could pimp the N95 8GB) and as a result been overtaken by Samsung as king of the multimedia phone. The very fact that they're releasing the N85 kind of shows the N96 to be the Edsel of the N-Series.

Nokia need to stop making identikit smartphones with only minor variances and concentrate on producing, say, three high end devices - a QWERTY based business phone (and they've done that with the E71), an excellent multimedia phone (the N85 comes close to this) and a touchscreen smartphone. They can do one or two minor variants but not half a dozen near identical units.

The other thing they need to do is to stop fannying about with different media distribution channels. We don't need, N-Gage, Download!, Nokia Music Store and Ovi, we just need a one stop shop like the iPhone has because otherwise it's too much of a pain in the arse to deal with. Sure, allow users to download from other sites - because Apple's lock in really sucks considering their quality control is so fundamentally flawed - but give them the option of an easy to use walled garden if they want it.

Nokia have grown too big too quickly and they need a butcher to come in and do some serious rationalisation or we may have another Motorola on our hands.

Mark Anderson

Comments on

sold out all but iPhone, don't forget about that.
Sell by association? Unfortunately, after they removed the n95-1's lens cover, the lens is very susceptible to scratches, even if you take care of it, which really degenerates image quality. Nokia needs to resolve this issue, in a responsible way similar to how Apple deals with defects, both with existing n95 owners, and these new devices.

huh

Comments on

I agree.

I'm a long time Nokia fan. I'm still rocking the original N95 which was released in Europe, and I love it. But compared to today's phones, it's outdated. I've already had a chance to play with the Samsung Omnia, and while the Touch screen wasn't something I particulary was fond of, the slim form factor (even the 16gb) coupled with a great 5 mpx camera kind of put things in prespective as to how Nokia have lagged behind in the top-level phone competition.

Samsung and Sony are already comin out with 8 mpx's by the end of the year, and Nokia is still delaying the release of it's outdated 16gb N96. C'mon!!!! give us the tube, or give us an 8mpx, or give us something!!
More and more companies are coming into the phone market now...the competition is getting tougher, and I think Nokia is going to go back to basing it's profit margin on low and mid end phones...not high end phones. And I honestly DO NOT see the reason to spend over $800 on the N96, when specs wise,..it has nothing substantial over the N95. If the N96 came in at $500, I would still think about it...but it's a HELL NO! at any phone above $650!

Abhishek

Comments on

As my comment above shows I completely agree. Reasonably, what justifies the price tag jump to $850 hmmm?

1) It's no revolutionizer in terms of phone functionality. THAT credit belongs to the N95, and it got it's due.
2) the same gosh darn 5 mpx camera
3) 16 gb. Oooohhh!! A jump from the 8GB version that's been selling for over a year now. When, in fact, the iphone's been out with a 16gb phone for 2 years now. Who the hell stores that much data in a 2.6 inch display screen cell phone anyway? Rather than enjoying my movie/sitcom, i'd be pissed at the small screen. As for songs, my 2gb micro sd card is MORE than enough. (and it cost me $10 only)
4) Better camera? That verdict is still out.
5) I'll give you that it's got an up on "upgraded Ram", but that alone hasn't justified the need to spend excess of $850 on a cell phone. For a business phone like the Bold, or the iphone, which users are required, or would like to run multiple functions at a time, I can understand how a 624 Mhz processor would be suitable. For a multimedia phone, Why? What's the need? Either i'm using the camera or making a call. I can NOT see myself doing any of the below things simultaneously, or even have the want to do 'em simultaneously:
- Take a photo
- Listen to music
- Surt the net
- make a call
- Install a new app.
- Delete an old app
- Look up a pdf file.

Like...wtf?? As for the rest of the "upgrades", well..if they matter so much, I guess each his own. To be honest, I don't know WHO Nokia's target market is, but a slightly upgraded N95 for $850 is not my cup of tea.

Abhishek

Comments on

avestar, not all of what you say is true:

Better Camera - Jury's still out, and the new Samsungs and Sony's are bounds ahead
16gb integrated memory - Double capacity, nice featue, I'll give you that
DVB-H (Mobile TV) - No one uses it, certainly not in the US or the UK, and as far as I know nowhere in Europe is out of trial stages
Upgraded ram and Symbian 9.3 (No more MEMORY OUT : CLOSE APPLICATIONS) - Again, an actual improvement]
Bigger Display - It has the same 2.8" display, no?
Hardware acceleration for video codecs for H.264 and WMV - To quote a greta man, I can watch HD video in teeny weeny eyestrain-o-vision?
