Panasonic's finally shipping the larger editions of its latest plasmas, from the updated and
suddenly more famous 103-inch model to the 65- and 58-inch
PZ800 series that have been leaking into U.S. stores recently. Japan also gets the top of the line PZR900 series that takes the YouTube access available in the latest
PZ850 series and throws in a 1 TB DVR to go along with the 30,000:1 contrast ratio and acTVila HD video on-demand support, packed into 42-, 50-, and 58-inch panels. Of course, for those with 5.1 million yen ($48,314 U.S.) laying around and a large amount of wall space, the king sized TH-103PZ800 is nearly entry-level priced compared to its
$70,000 predecessor, so why not treat yourself? You deserve it.

With money like that to burn, you'd already have everything else you needed.*

30,000 to 1 contrast ratio and they have the nerve to release to production? Are you kidding me?

Panasonic makes great plasmas, and these ones are as good as ever, but I still don't see why anyone would need a 103 inch TV. Or, for that matter, who would have enough space for one in a room. If we were to buy a 103 inch plasma, we'd need to build a new room just for it to fit!

You're definitely missing the target demographic here, dude.

Granted the people buying this wouldn't care, but that thing has to cost a fortune just to keep powered! You probably pay about a dollar per minute in electricity. Cheaper to go to the theater...but life must be nice for those rich bastards.

I wonder what the price of the 65" would be. Although I am still a fan of the Pioneer Kuro. I have a first gen 60", but I want to go bigger and the max I can fit on the wall between the two windows is 75"

I don't find any the TVs released lately to be that interesting. Nice and better than their predecessors, yes, but still kind of underwheming.
I'm very interested in Mitsu's LaserVue. I'm not going to buy anything until I get a chance to take a serious look at those and see what 90% color gamut reproduction looks like in person.

@MadMike: according to the press release the 65" will be 850,000 Yen, or (at current exchange rates) $7,700 in USD. Although it should be noted that many of the electronics that make their way to the US from Japan do not do so at a 1:1 exchange rate. In many cases, they're priced lower in the US than their equivalent USD price when translating Yen.

I would love to see an "affordable" 80" screen released soon. The 103" inch is nice but far too pricey. I have an old 65" RPTV that still has a great picture but I'd like to upgrade to an 80". A projector isn't an option so an nice 80" would be great. I'm hoping Pioneer, Panasonic and Sony offer something in the 80" size by this time next year.

Damn! I just pulled the trigger on a PZ800u, and now they are coming out with a built in DVR? I knew I should have waited just one more year, but I thought the days of built in DVR were over with. That feature probably won't come to the US anyways, and if it did, I doubt Time Warner would play well with it. Oh well, I like my TV.

The website says for release on September 10 2006 ?!?
Asmodeus Dhoine @ Aug 26th 2008 10:07PM
Pretty steep price for plasma - aren't they burn out fast?
