Delta calls "first" on LED-based DLP projector with a little help from Luminus
Even though the product doesn't have any availability, pricing, or even a name yet, Delta Electronics is claiming to have the first full HD LED-based DLP projector, and is showing a demo unit at IFA and CEDIA. Using tech developed by TI and Luminus Devices, Delta says it's ready to go with a full-size 1080p projector with "PhlatLight" LEDs pumping out the lumens, which of course means an end to futzing around with burnt-out projector bulbs right in the middle of your feature presentation. No doubt, we're seeing LEDs show up in all manner of display devices, and if LED-lamped projector prices follow a trajectory like LED-backlit LCDs, we'd be happy campers indeed.[Via About Projectors]

If the price point is right, this could remove one of the major obstacles for most customers considered front projection.
No whining colour wheels, rainbow effect, hot exhaust, flickering/failing bulbs, etc.

So how do we "Low Rank" this entire article?

Unfortunately, DLP with LED still produces rainbows. Look at Samsung's LED DLP TVs. Only the first generation didn't (don't ask why, I don't know).

Hey Texas Instruments, my new graphing calculator (2007) is more expensive than my friend's 1997 model of the same thing cost when new, and there is no difference in functionality! It costs more now for a worse calculator from them! What's going on????? Ahhh!
I refuse to use any new product (such as this projector) by TI until this crime against technology is rectified and they update their graphing calculators! For god's sake, it doesn't even have a back light! You could fit six iPod Touches into it, all of which can be used as graphing calculators! I don't understand!!!!!!
(If ANYONE understands how that makes sense, please tell me. For god's sake.)

Honestly I think they're just afraid of making the calculators look too advanced and getting torn down by schools. As long as they're old as dirt they're less suspected of cheating.
Or just as likely they know they'll sell either way so it doesn't matter...
Endejas @ Aug 30th 2008 1:51AM
Don't call him an idiot, moron. Take a look at your first sentence. You don't try to refute or even imply that you didn't buy that calculator.

But if you just stop and think- what is really in there do you think? Gears? Levers/pulley systems? I mean, it just seems that it is so big that it shouldn't even be able to survive on today's market, you know? Educational tools should, if anything, be more advanced than our other devices!
The children are our future, let them have good calculators.

I just got the TI-86 (I preferred it to the 83) emulator for my PocketPC
letstakeawalk @ Aug 30th 2008 2:39AM
My Stat 101 class required a TI-83, because it is the standard calculator (I hear you can even use it on the SAT?) I wasn't enthused about having to buy such an expensive device for a three-month use, but my ancient calc from the late 80's was unsuitable - not because it didn't perform the same stat functions, but because the whole learning process revolved around the concept that having all students use the same device made it much easier for the professor to show us what to do.
Like John Titor above, I quickly realized that an emulator for my iPaq was the perfect solution. I'm no math geek, but I sure made some kids jealous with my touch-screen...
I suppose Apple has a TI-app for the Touch and Iphone, right?
who? @ Aug 30th 2008 8:28AM
@letstakeawalk
I guess that it isn't surprising that you didn't know this, but nonetheless, Apple generally doesn't make apps. Sure they made the original apps (duh) and a couple of Apps Store apps, but they actually only 'have' less than 20 of the apps of the over 3,000 apps on the store.
Due to copyright laws, only Texas Instruments could make a TI app, and the one graphing calculator that there is for the iPhone/iPod Touch pretty much sucks.
GatgetMan @ Aug 30th 2008 12:35PM
I agree! What it going on!? My Grandpa said he bought Hershey's Chocolate bard for $.05, The EXACT same bar (2008 model) cost 15x that! $.75 for the Exact same bar, but it's actually fewer ounces!
This is outrageous! We must give a name to this phenomenon. I vote, "ballooning", no... "expanding" no... "Inflation"!
P.S. I absolutely refuse to buy the EXACT SAME gas that costs $5/gal, when the 1997 model only cost $1.28/gal

letstakeawalk @ Aug 30th 2008 4:01PM
@ Who?
You are correct, that because I don't own an iPhone or Touch, I am not fully aware of what applications are available for it. It does make sense that an emulator would be available, because they have been available for WM for at least a few years (I had mine in 2005). I didn't mean to insinuate that Apple was the creator of the software applications that are available, just that they are available through Apple.
Basically, if you're complaining about the price/benefit ratio of the TI-83 vs modern electronics, and you ignored that emulators are available, then what are you complaining about - you needed the calc, and you had to pay the price. However, since you also admit that it was a hand-me-down, I really don't get your problem...
who? @ Aug 30th 2008 4:22PM
@letstakeawalk
My problem is that I need a calculator that I can use on my SATs and college exams (mobile phones/other devices that emulate graphing calculators are not allowed), and I don't want to carry around a heavy outdated piece of equipment (not a TI-83, I have no idea where you get that idea from, I have a TI-89 Titanium).
Why are you guys defending them anyways? If Apple still sold iPods from 2001, and upped the price every year, you would be all over them! Or what if Dell was still producing and selling their 1998 Turbo PC? Technology from ten years ago is not acceptable by today's standards.
*my friend's TI-89 is from 1998, not 1997, but it is still 10 years old!

Dear Dr. Who.
We would like to take a moment to thank you for your time in bringing this oversight to our attention. The Calculator devision frequently visits all forums postings about products that carry a component that TI makes (Delta makes this particular device, we supply the DLP).
As you have brought to our attention, you will no longer buy anything which contains TI components.
As we strive to be a company which keeps our word, we would like to officially invite you to never purchase, or use, any product which contains TI components In your words "(Such as this projector)". While it does sadden us that your refusal to buy this projector, which you no doubt we planning on buying, because of the outrageous price someone ELSE paid for your 2007 TI calculator, we will work to assist you in every way in boycotting TI.
Please reference the following:
http://focus.ti.com/general/docs/prod.tsp
As you no doubt already know, TI has a wide variety of products and technologies, which you are undoubtedly using at this very moment to connect to the internet with.
We would like to provide you with a "Medical Alert!" Bracelet so that you can alert and medical professional, should you find yourself in an emergency situation, to NOT use any TI products on your person. Such devices like defibrillators, X-Ray devices, MRI and Blood Pressure Monitors can be referenced here:
http://focus.ti.com/apps/docs/appcategory.tsp?appId=270
We will begin immediately to rectify this "crime against technology". Once we have accomplished this goal, we will notify you, so that you can resume using and or buying (Or getting "handed down") TI products.
It sincerely pains us that the price your "hand me down" calculator cost has created such a burden for you.
In the mean time, we've discovered a place in which you would certainly be much more happy. Please make your way to Planet Unicorn and we will contact you the moment this crises has been handled.

1. You have atrocious grammar.
2. As you have stated, you are not a TI representative. You are not an expert. You are not intelligent. You, my friend, are wasting almost as much of our (my?) time as yours.
3. If what you are saying is true (and I know it isn't), and I do not have any alternative but to use TI products, then they have a monopoly, which is illegal. Competition is what encourages progress and affordability, ergo they have come out with a new projector, but not even seen fit to add even so much as a back light to their overpriced, top of the line Ti-89 Titanium calculator!
4. I'll be happy to rebut any argument someone like you can come up with (a lying idiot) in future posts, thank you (not).

TI Calc Customer Service @ Aug 30th 2008 6:21PM
Dear (NOT Dr.) Who?
As your Daddy pointed out, you have poor spelling and grammar. And Since only TI Representatives are experts and intelligent, you clearly are neither.
If you would follow the links, you would realize that what I stated is certainly true. and if you would take a moment to read the title of this article you'll notice that THIS PROJECTOR IS NOT A TI PRODUCT! It's made by DELTA who uses a TI COMPONENT!
TI Didn't "come out with a new projector, but not even seen fit to add even so much as a back light to their overpriced, top of the line Ti-89 Titanium calculator!" DELTA came out with a new projector.
So Unless you are trying to get DELTA to make a Backlit TI-89 Calculator, you really need to shut up.
And as far as "You, my friend, are wasting almost as much of our (my?) time as yours." You need to reference the first post you made, in which you being your rant about a company which is NOT the manufacturer of the projector. TI Builds a PIECE of the projector, and you're ranting about you FREE calculator NOT made by DELTA. You began wasting everyone's time, (but in reality it's quite entertaining watching you make a total jackass out of yourself).
Building components that are contained in thousands of different products is hardly a monopoly. It's good business. There are hundreds, sometimes thousands of individual components inside every electronics device. Even the TI Calculator you so loathe has components from dozens of other companies inside. this synergistic approach to technology is what creates the devices we know and love.
The whole point of saying that by boycotting this projector, you would have to boycott thousands of electronic devices was to show you how utterly stupid your first post was, ranting about a calculator in a story about a DELTA brand Projector. The whole point of saying you'd have to boycott anything made with TI components was to use satire to point out how STUPID you are making yourself sound by not even being able to COMPREHEND how other companies use TI COMPONENTS to create their products.
Your logic is as follows if a=b and b=c then Q=r "I have a new 2007 calc = i didn't buy it idiot" and "Why on earth would you think it's a ti-83, It's a ti-89" We of course knew that it was a TI-89, cause you made that, amongst all your ranting, so clear, concise and obvious.

the deflation we have become so used to in technology applies to the power of the chipsets (moore's law). In the case of something like a graphing calculator, the packaging, distribution, and miscellaneous hardware (lcd screen, case, battery holder) are subject to inflation. For the academic use that the calculator is aimed at more functionality is not appropriate ( the (academic) 'man' is holding the technology back). The relative cost of the chipset in the TI graphing calculator has been very very low even in 1997, so it may have moved from $.30 to $.05 but the overall cost of the device hasn't changed much at all (and has even been subject to inflation).

#0 Please read my entire post, I read yours, so I feel it is only fair you give me the same treatment I gave you, and not force me to repeat myself.
#1
"my friend's 1997 model of the same thing cost when new"
You can't take part of my sentence out of context, it makes no sense without the rest of it! Anyway, that grammar is correct. Cost is past tense, (it didn't 'costed,' that is not a word) and even though it sounds odd, there is nothing wrong with it (grammatically). If you want to, you may replace the word 'cost' with the phrase 'was priced at' (since I was using it as past tense) to make it sound better in your head. I chose not to, as I was trying to keep my post a shorter and faster read.
#2
"Why would I have bought that if I knew that?"
Repetitive, yes. Grammar and spelling? Perfect. I didn't write that stuff for my creative writing class or anything.
#3
"just stop and think- what" A dash followed by a space?
Yes, yes. A dash followed by a space. Punctuation, however, is apparently not grammar or spelling. One time I commented on somebody's poor punctuation and called it a grammatical mistake (as you are now), and I was quickly told by my fellows that 'punctuation and grammar are two different things', and according to my teachers, they are right! Here's a link to one of hundreds of online examples: http://www.esc.edu/esconline/across_esc/WritingResources.nsf/frames/Grammar+&+Punctuation?OpenDocument . Note that it is divided into two sections, grammar and punctuation.
#4
"3,000 apps on the store"
The App Store is not a physical place, it is online (through iTunes). People generally don't say something is 'in the Internet' they say 'on the Internet'. I just applied that (on/in) logic to that situation based upon that precedent. If you feel I was wrong to do so, I'm sorry.
#5
"Food and technology are practically the same thing!"
This, my friend, is known as sarcasm. Notice how it is obviously not true, but helped me to illustrate the point that the previous person's comparison was ridiculous while grabbing the attention of others (you, for instance).
#6
I totally agree with you on the 'anyways'. I would like to point out, however, that 'anyways' is a word many people in the U.S. (such as myself) use and is widely accepted anyways (hehe). It is even accepted by your grammar tips link (albeit not as the most 'educated' way of speaking)!
#6.5
" 'Or what if Dell...' Don't start a sentence with a conjunction"
Or end without punctuation. (Hehe, see what I did there?)
#7
" 'wasting almost as much of our (my?) time as yours.' If it took you almost as much time to read the TI Cal C.S. comment than it took to write it, you really should get some tutoring." * your 'than' should be an 'as'
If it took that much time to write it (which I doubt it did, based upon the quality of the writing), then I would suggest that it is he (and possibly you) who should be getting some tutoring.
#8
" 'highly ranked' Needs to be capitalized.
Who?s your Daddy's self-conscious need results in 'Highest Ranked' not 'highly ranked' "
1. It was only at Highly Ranked when I posted that.
2. I wasn't talking about his title on the page, I was talking about that as a description, so technically it was completely correct.
#9
"Post #9
"1st part: DOUBLE POST
explanation: 'Which you no doubt WERE planning on buying' now you understand... That was a tough error to decipher."
No, that was because the first one was just a reply to the first guy, and it went on as its own post (I hate this comment system so much...). When I realized that, I copied and pasted it into the comment window as a reply. By then however, the second person had already put a reply up as well, so I added my reply to him in that post as well (which then also didn't go on as a reply, so I had to do it a third time to make it work correctly as a reply).
#9.1
" 'I would be supporting them and their monopolistic practices' I'm glad you finally agree, and I hope you don't turn into a liar by buying anything with TI chips in them. I fully expect you to research, and if necessary, crack open any and all electronic devices you purchase, to see if you are supporting this great evil."
Two things. One, that was my view all along. Two, I never called them a 'great evil', I just said that they weren't being competitive and allowing for progress in the graphing calculator business (like Microsoft used to do with their software and Apple does with iTunes/iPod, but without lowering prices or making new models/versions).
#9.2
" 'I didn't misspell a single word' See: Post #6, Bitch."
I already agreed that many wouldn't consider 'anyways' proper English, but here in America it is actually widely accepted.
#9.3
" 'I simply told you that you wrong' wtf!?"
You finally caught a real honest to god error, I missed an " 're " on the end of the second you. In your words: "That was a tough error to decipher." Too bad it doesn't count, seeing as I wrote that after saying I didn't misspell anything (keyword didn't, as in past tense), so nice try!
#9.4
"Again, capitalize God"
I would rather not take the name of God in vain, thank you very much. Leaving it lowercase keeps me on God's good side.
#9.5
" 'instead of incorrectly paraphrasing you idiot' Please reread that one."
Please think before you copy and paste, it saves me the time of reading more and you the time of writing more. We could both win!
In closing, I admit to being human. I admit I can make errors, a fact which I never disputed. I do deny making any errors within the comments I indicated (from my original comment to my eighth reply). If there was one error, it would have been the 's' on the end of 'anyway', but even that's pretty iffy. I would like to point out, however, that you made many times as many errors as I did while trying to correct my comment's spelling/grammar, which is the best example of irony I have seen in a long time.

Oh, I'd wouldn't be making nice... actually, I'd call Who? a flat-out liar who is extremely ungrateful about the things he lies about.
His first claim was that his calc was "...my new graphing calculator (2007) is more expensive than my friend's 1997 model of the same thing ..."
Then he says "...I have a TI-89 Titanium."
The TI-89 was introduced in 1998. The Titanium model superceded it in 2004. There are four hardware versions of the Ti-89, and the most recent was released in 2006. So if Who? isn't lying, then he's just ignorant, because his calc is at least a few generations newer, as he claims his is a 2007 model. Therfore, his whole supposition is in fact wrong, because Texas Instruments did steadily improve the technology, "...and there is no difference in functionality! It costs more now for a worse calculator from them..."

Engadget Readers, I would like to extend my heartfelt and sincere apology for the comments on this post. One reader, namely Who?, made remarks that referenced Texas Instruments in a manner which bordered on libel. He made erroneous claims about their products, specifically the TI-89 calculator, which were demonstrably false. The TI-89 line has seen substantial changes in its hardware and physical design over its nearly ten years in production. The pricing of the same product has been affected by market forces, including its popularity with the educational markets, which means the pricing has remained remarkably stable. In defending his claims regarding the lack of technological improvements, he insulted and offended several commenters, calling them names and opening himself up to rebuke by his fellow commenters. His comments also revealed an astounding lack of hubris or thankfulness, as his chief complaint appeared to be the price of a product which he had received at no cost.
I understand the engaging discourse which can occur on this site, from the thoughtful suggestions of the l337 to the n003s, to the flame wars between fanbois on both fronts. I enjoy these, but this thread pulled me in a bit too deep. However, I am still pleased to say that I think Who? is a major jerk, an immature high-school graduate-yet-to-be who has a huge awakening when he enters (if ever) the undergraduate system. If he thinks he got screwed by having to get a specific calculator, then wait until he buys his first semester's texts.
So I repeat my apology to all Engadget readers, save one. Who? can go fark himself

Ha! What a bunch of crap. You called me a liar based on something I had corrected myself about NINE HOURS EARLIER THAN YOUR POST. I think that if anyone is going to have a rude awakening, it will be you. You falsely accuse me of being a liar, and then continue to insult me! That IS libel, which is not acceptable in today's society. I sir, will not stand for that. My friend's old model can do everything mine can, it just has less memory for apps. Most people wouldn't even count a memory increase as a true 'update', but I can see where you are coming from, and therefore give you points for your effort.
I have already purchased my college texts, and at no cost to myself! Don't you realize that the semester has already begun for most people? I am doing PSEO and was the top ranking student in my high school!!! I had a 4.0 GPA, and I never found the coursework rigorous enough for me, which is why I enrolled in Post-Secondary. All of my classes and textbooks are paid for by the state (government? I'm not sure exactly, just not me!). Money is tight right now for my family, so I think I will go ahead and complain that the calculator costs too much if I feel like it. Apple haters love to complain about the high priced products such as the MacBook Air, and I'm guessing they didn't own or pay for one.
As for being ungrateful, I thanked the person who gave it to me about ten times, and I am very grateful. However, I do not see how that in any way relates to you, or my complaint about how a company has overpriced an outdated product.
I'm sorry that you can't admit your mistakes, but don't try to push your problems off on me, OK?

"So if Who? isn't lying, then he's just ignorant, because his calc is at least a few generations newer, as he claims his is a 2007 model. Therfore, his whole supposition is in fact wrong, because Texas Instruments did steadily improve the technology, "...and there is no difference in functionality! It costs more now for a worse calculator from them..."
I'll retract the part calling you a liar, since you've admitted that there are upgrades that have occurred in the TI-89 between the model your friend purchased and the one you were given.
