Sony Ericsson says XPERIA X1 still on track to ship in Q4
Rumors of the XPERIA X1 being delayed to 2009 have been floating around forever, and the chatter's only gotten louder at IFA -- to the point where Sony Ericsson's been forced into damage-control mode for a second time, telling Reuters that "there is absolutely no delay" and that the company's first WinMo phone is "on target" to "roll out in Q4." That's not quite the "second half of 2008" SE's been saying since the X1 was announced, but it's still in the window -- and given the half-baked nature of the devices we got to play with at IFA, we'd say taking a little extra time to get things right isn't the worst idea in the world, even it means missing that rumored October Vodafone release date.

I really hope it can out do the touch pro.
Techie @ Sep 1st 2008 11:46AM
I do too. I just hope Sony Ericsson doesn't rush thing and turn the X1 into a piece of crap.
Rogue_Genius @ Sep 1st 2008 12:24PM
So here's the question: if AT&T is working on the "Fuze" as a GSM version of the Touch Pro, isn't someone going to lose out by releasing a phone that (interally) is _very_ similar to it's competitor? I thought the X1 was the GSM answer to the Touch Pro...?
Phoenix @ Sep 1st 2008 1:09PM
What planet are you LIVING on?
The Touch Pro is a GSM and CDMA device, different versions. That's why WE CAN HAVE IT IN EUROPE AND ASIA. It's not CDMA only >.
Muhammed @ Sep 1st 2008 2:59PM
I did hope that, I now hope it can out do the HTC Dream, but those maybe hopes that never come true.
maveric101 @ Sep 2nd 2008 2:07AM
me too. that screen gives me a huge boner.
maveric101 @ Sep 2nd 2008 2:09AM
though there's something i'm not sure about. will current WinMo apps support the WVGA screen? if they support WQVGA will it scale?
Rogue_Genius @ Sep 2nd 2008 11:33PM
@ Phoenix: I guess in your infinite rebirths you missed the part about certain folks (such as myself) referring to their home markets (the U.S.) in their posts. To date, I've heard much more noise about the Pro being offered in CDMA form here in the states. Yes I know that Europe had the MDA Vario IV as of this summer, but I have heard _very_ little about it coming here in that form.
Tyler @ Sep 5th 2008 11:08PM
please let is be so, my contract is up in December and i really want this phone
who? @ Sep 1st 2008 11:31AM
Is it just me, or do the way those four buttons line up make anyone else want to stick a straw through each side?

Its just you ;)

I don't get it....
loosely_coupled @ Sep 1st 2008 7:30PM
yes. lol.
Also, I think it's a big mistake to put the POS windows mobile into this great hardware. It's just screaming for a decent Android implementation. After mobile OSX and now the updated Blackberry OS on the Bold, windows mobile feels ancient. Its just pathetic...
ByronGman @ Sep 2nd 2008 1:23AM
@ loosely_coupled
How do you even know what Android will be like, it's not even out yet.
Frankly, I'd take something that I know will work (albiet in a clunky fashion) over something that just flopped out of the oven.
And WinMo 7 is coming soon as well, so hopefully this thing will be upgradeable...
Jon @ Sep 3rd 2008 11:30AM
Yes lets get rid of powerful windows mobile and give it non multitasking android. Another pretty looking OS with about as much power as Palm OS.
Flashpoint @ Sep 1st 2008 11:37AM
I Luv the look.
Lets see if Microsoft can come up with a mobile OS that competes with iPhone's
omoks @ Sep 1st 2008 11:45AM
Are you serious? The Windows Mobile OS is the best and most powerful mobile OS out there. The iPhone OS may be smart and intuitive but is it powerfule and productive? NO!
tim @ Sep 1st 2008 12:11PM
"Let's see"?? Erm, love it or loathe it, Windows Mobile 6.1 is already out there - you don't have to wait for the X1. I'm using it right now on my year-old Tytn II. Aside from a little eyecandy in the form of Sony Ericsson's "Panels", there's nothing new on the X1 that you can't find on pretty much any current Windows Mobile phone.
The X1 is not a game changer, it's not a revolution, it's just another Windows Mobile phone - one that was announced so early, and since delayed so long, it's actually well past it's best before date already. The Touch Pro does all the same stuff and more, and is already in the shops and working well. The X1 is plagued by bugs (according to SE reps themselves) and won't be out for at least another month, most likely two. Why bother?
Flashpoint @ Sep 1st 2008 12:11PM
I said "compete" with the iPhone OS.
Not "that's better" than the iPhone OS.
Right away the Microsoft fanboys jump all over seemingly pro-apple comments.
That's almost as stupid as being a Ron Paul supporter.
Abuzar Baloach @ Sep 1st 2008 12:20PM
So... You want them to dumb it down so it competes with the iPhone? Since you pretty much already admitted that it's better and therefore doesn't compete with the iPhone?
Yeah, you're smart alright.
Phoenix @ Sep 1st 2008 1:20PM
>.< So YOU go around insulting everything that's not apple and yet you expect people who explain the truth to be banned?
Oh wait. This is Engadget >.
who? @ Sep 1st 2008 2:18PM
@Darrent
Apple came first.
PM1 @ Sep 1st 2008 3:53PM
@ Darrent
1. Apple did come first (even though their success was short lived once the 90's began)
2. Your incomprehensible level of mental retardation and subsequent display of childish taunts made my day.
3. Or else...what? You're gonna huff and puff and buy out Apple?
Richard @ Sep 1st 2008 3:05PM
Wrong. I came first. Then I smoked a cigarette.
Mark Anderson @ Sep 1st 2008 4:55PM
@Flashpoint
Hey, come on... mobile OSX is buggy and falls over, Windows Mobile is buggy and falls over. What's to choose between the two?
Argot @ Sep 1st 2008 5:12PM
@flashpoint: There is someone stupid here... Wanna see who it is? Here, look in this mirror...
debugy2k @ Sep 1st 2008 11:40AM
I love SE phones but they should just use symbian OS instead of the bloated windows mobile os. And from the demo we saw before..it looks like it is sooooo lagggyyyy on the response time.
sandman @ Sep 1st 2008 2:24PM
yah i agree with u im a SE fan, but not of windows
Skope @ Sep 1st 2008 3:30PM
Aye. Symbian has been and will be by far most used smartphone platform as long as Nokia keeps it and SE has always been part of that Symbian family(UIQ). UIQ is dead after Nokia decided to buy the remaining 50% Symbian( there's rumours about S60 5th edition device from SE, but that probally takes some time).
Plus it might be that as SE is doing so crappy currently that they wanna be different compared to rest of Asian and European market. After all WM got 6% of smartphone market share there and they are so behind of Samsung and Nokia in so many ways so they need something.
p3ngwin @ Sep 1st 2008 6:18PM
you mean the demo on the unfinished hardware and the unfinished software?
yeah how can that compare with finished products
haX0r @ Sep 2nd 2008 9:10PM
They should load this sucker with Android. Now you will have a kick butt OS that looks nice. Like I said in another post, once both are released, someone will put them together.
I can't wait for the Android loaded Xperia showing up here with the beautiful screen.
Snitch @ Sep 1st 2008 11:50AM
This phone is looking old already, looks like my old HTC 8125, honestly WTF is taking Sony so long
Richard @ Sep 1st 2008 12:00PM
Quality control?
vlai @ Sep 1st 2008 11:53AM
I couldn't wait anymore. Just picked up the E71.
Miky @ Sep 1st 2008 11:53AM
I would definitely get this if it ran on Android, but it's WinMo. HTC makes the coolest things.
Patriks7 @ Sep 1st 2008 11:56AM
decisions decisions..
this? wait for the Dream? take the iPhone 3g?
too bad i just cant have them all :p
rita hainsworth @ Sep 1st 2008 5:35PM
I am getting them all.
jd @ Sep 1st 2008 11:58AM
what is taking this giant company to come up with a cell phone?
GON @ Sep 1st 2008 12:10PM
Why? Why can't you you be respectful of someone else's decision(s) and preferences?
catdogburger @ Sep 1st 2008 12:19PM
With Sony Ericsson, it's always about the XPERIA X1, what about the C905?
I know google is my friend, and wikipedia has the release date set for October 7th, anybody know anything more about the C905 release date?
Hugh @ Sep 1st 2008 1:02PM
I just googled that, sex as hell.
NightBlade @ Sep 1st 2008 1:44PM
Well, some retailers have the date set on 24th Oct. Eitehr way, it's still an October-ish release. I'm getting one as well. :D
tim @ Sep 1st 2008 12:18PM
I think this phone is going to fall between two stools and be another big miss for SE. The Windows Mobile OS is great for business and enterprise, but canny business people will simply by the equivalents from HTC, they're cheaper, available now, and come with some guarantee (particularly in the case of HTC) that they'll actually work. The consumers, meanwhile, are just going to be turned off by the clunky old Windows Mobile interface. The "Panels" top layer isn't enough to hide that - HTC are already doing something much more cute and friendly with TouchFlo 3D, and even that is aimed primarily at the business market, not the kids deciding between this and an Iphone. The Iphone, on a UI and general experience level (and "Xperia" is supposedly all about the experience) is many light years ahead of anything the Winmo platform is capable of, right now - and I speak as a reasonably satisfied Winmo user.
omoks @ Sep 1st 2008 12:54PM
TouchFlo 3d is just another Today plug in. The X1 panels are on a separate OS. Please know your facts. Sounds like you've never used a phone with TouclFLO 3d or TouchFLO.
Phoenix @ Sep 1st 2008 1:24PM
@Omoks
NO. BULLSHIT. Panels is a skin, just like TouchFLO 3D. TouchFLO 3D is deeper and means you have to go to the standard interface FAR less.
The old TouchFLO was far more like panels than TouchFLO 3D is. It was a shortcut system.
tim @ Sep 1st 2008 3:24PM
"know your facts"? LOL! you're really going to hate yourself when you're older. here are some facts for you:
- the Panels are not "on a separate OS". There is no separate OS, this is a 100% Windows Mobile device. The SE Panels are just WinMo software running on WinMo.
- the Panels are a Today screen enhancement, just like Touchflo. in fact, one of the Panels is the Today screen.
- you're an idiot.
andrew @ Sep 1st 2008 12:23PM
