Bacteria returns with "Mini-Platform" console mod

Console modder "Bacteria" sure managed to turn a few heads with his previous multi-platform console mod, and he's now done it again with his new so-called Mini-Platform Plug 'n' Play Console System, which boasts the same, uh, distinct look we've come to expect. At the moment, this one relies solely on a variety of TV plug 'n' play game systems for its gaming options, which Bacteria converted into a more convenient cart form, although he also promises to make a GBA add-on for the system "in due course." As you can see in the video after the break, despite appearances, the system appears to work quite well, and you can even find step-by-step plans for building your own by hitting up the read link below.

He thinks it looks pretty good? Okay, it's neat & tidy, but it doesn't really look nice.
Oh well, it works and I can't do this kind of stuff, so well done.
What is the real use though? To be able to play cartridges from any plug 'n' play console, or actual game cartridges?

Think he needs to bone up on his arkanoid skils. Great mod though, I'd buy one of em off him.

It seems he decided to use one of the worst d-pads ever created: the Gamecube d-pad.

as soon as eeePC version is available, I want one

It's the Genesis...FROM HELL.

SOOPERGOOMAN - I wasn't trying with Arkanoid, point was to show it working and not showing my playing a game!
TMFAN - system works great with the GC d-pad (or from a GBA, I can't remember which), however with adult hands, a bigger d-pad is better, so I will be changing the d-pad to a NES one presently.
Will be doing the GBA too on this, it is much better with a larger 5.4" screen than a pokey GBA or GBA SP one. I have done this mod before, so I know what I am doing.
w4rh34rt - Plug'n'play systems have some very good games (eg arcade perfect games on Namco, etc) only lousy controls and unresponsive and bad "joysticks". My system allows playing these systems as cartridge systems, with nice rubber membrane contact buttons and proper d-pad; with a nice 5.4" screen (not "squinty"). System is light, easy to hold, easy to use and long battery life.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I love it: the important factor though is functionality and comfort to use - this system is unique and comfortable to use. I have played a few hours on it so far. There are quite a few more plug'n'plays I will be converting over the next weeks; then back to my previous project.

Bacteria - kudos and a nice job! You undoubtedly have put many hours into your work - looks like it works nicely!
don't let the commenters get you down on the looks - I think they're kind of spoiled sometimes - To me, the important
thing is that your systems work and are playable/usable. Not everyone has the skills to do homebrew construction like
this and you should be complimented on your efforts!
w4rh34rt @ Sep 2nd 2008 2:45PM
Haha, you gave me some good reasons! Anyway, I like your work very much. I wasn't insulting your idea of good looking, I for one always value function over fashion, and like I said, overall, it looks nice ^_^
Sorry for not wording my comment very well, once again, brilliant job.

How does a thrown together piece of junk like this make it to Engadget when there are so many more deserving mini consoles out there? Just check a few sites like benheck.com and that XBox mods site for some *real* modded systems, which have some actual effort and talent put into them...

Damn AWESOME 360 wireless interface: i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk195/techknott/DSC01140.jpg
Any and all of the above are a) Way more interesting than some chinese knockoff player, b) Way better designed, c) Not drop dead ugly (Yeah yeah its subjective, but this crosses the line. you don't see Sony rolling out oil pastel LCD panels because it would be globally detested)
SS @ Sep 2nd 2008 7:56PM
....Yeah.
The people who made those consoles in the above comment officially support and approve of this console. Because only they know what it takes to make one of these, and the skill required to make it look nice like that. We, and they, dont need anyone making comparisons.
And besides, until any of you experience what it takes to make one, or even hold one of these, then I suggest you shut your mouths.

While you can go on about LoB's Snes and the portable N64s for ages you are really missing the point. Making a N64 or SNES portable is nothing new. I've done one SS above has done one YYTU, Marshall, SS again (times that one by 4), Silufs done two, Bacteria's done one, RPGTNick had done one, Hailrazer too and Benheck as well.
While some may look prettier than the others they are still just a N64p no matter how awesome they all have the same functionality.
While you may not like the look of Bacteria's system what it has done is go and do something completely different and amazing.
by the way good work bacteria
