Sanyo's Xacti 1010 gets the hands-on treatment
Sanyo's latest 1080i pocket camcorder (that'd be the Xacti 1010) was just sitting there all pretty like at IFA 2008, so our compadres over at Engadget Spanish took the liberty of posting up a gallery of hands-on shots. Not too many surprises in terms of design, but the demonstrative video of the super slow-mo mode is pretty trippy to say the least. Head on over and give it a look, won't you?

Yay. @ Sep 3rd 2008 12:17PM
Will it work with the Inspiron 910?
I hope it's released on time.
Kris @ Sep 3rd 2008 12:39PM
Spanish Engadget > All you pinkos?
I don't understand. WHY WOULD YOU E-MAIL ME THAT?
Kris @ Sep 3rd 2008 12:43PM
http://fr.engadget.com = French Engadget but there are only two articles. Haha
konshuss @ Sep 3rd 2008 1:30PM
i'm going to take a wild guess and say it's more dependent on your operating system as to whether you can transfer videos to your computer/laptop from this camera. either that or expect a full in-spanish listing of every brand and model of computer it's compatible with, because that's how things normally go, right?
avester @ Sep 3rd 2008 12:22PM
I won't even dare to look at footage taken with full zoom...
mugupo @ Sep 3rd 2008 12:37PM
Agree, that lack long optical or digital zooms, plus the price are too much cost nearly same as the regular more zoom hd camcorder, but what I really wanted is another company make a blu-ray camcorder, i know Hitachi has issues,

I have the HD1000 and their wide angle and telephoto lens adapters, and I get great footage with and without them.
Kris @ Sep 3rd 2008 12:41PM
Lack of digital zoom? You don't want digital zome you idiot.
Next time you need to blow up a photo, just use "digital zoom" and make it double the size. DOES IT LOOK GOOD TO YOU?!
WTF @ Sep 3rd 2008 12:25PM
WTF is up with the beaner commentary?
Meccalangelo @ Sep 3rd 2008 12:39PM
Umm..maybe because its the Spanish equivalent of Engadget? Im just guessing, I didnt read any of the post.
phanbouy @ Sep 3rd 2008 1:34PM
ha... there were two comments, and the first was a troll by that usual troll whose name is often "my iphone is better than your face" or some shit

nevermind, looks like the moderator deleted all of the anglo-saxon invaders

I'm pretty certain the 1010 is capable of 1080p as shown in your initial posts video @ :38 http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/05/sanyos-xacti-hd1010-1080i-camcorder-shoots-300fps-slow-mo/
Flashpoint @ Sep 3rd 2008 12:38PM
Try getting that past airport security.
Kris @ Sep 3rd 2008 12:40PM
Hide it in your ass?
Meccalangelo @ Sep 3rd 2008 12:41PM
I was thinking along the same lines. Imagine the secret service pouncing on you while all you are trying to do is record a presidential speech. o_0

I'd love to see the 300fps footage. The clip this article points to is only half speed, not very trippy.
Mike @ Sep 3rd 2008 12:39PM
my my, she has a nice tounge in super-slow mo doesn't she?!
farfisa @ Sep 3rd 2008 12:42PM
I'm sure it's also nice at full speed.

Doh, I don't understand Spanish... :( But, thanks Google Translate! (hopefully the link works)

Beautiful but.....and I realize this is a VERY American-centric complaint..living in DC and being politically involved. I couldn't ever use this. I can't imagine attending a political event / rally / protest / march and pulling this thing out and pointing it at anyone. Especially with our overzealous security guards, uptight secret service agents or any of our generally pistol happy DC Police officer's, Blackwater fetishists or overly "patriotic" citizens who would relish the chance to "mistake" it for a gun.
You might as well paint "Please take me out of the Darwin gene pool." on your head if you use this in DC. It'd be suicide.

I don't think it looks like a weapon. Especially not when it has a lens attached to it and it's in use with its display open. Then again I bet in DC finger pointing could get you taken down.
blarvh @ Sep 3rd 2008 3:18PM
Just make sure you are white before attempting this!
Everyone else get shot trying to reach for their wallets.
the006iceman @ Sep 19th 2008 2:30AM
While I know that things are very tight security-wise in DC, your claim is quite silly. An acquaintance of mine used the Xacti HD1000 to film an interview with Pres Nominee McCain in DC awhile back, and there was no problem. She even said that it helped him be more relaxed, because it was not as visible as a camera, so it was almost like an off-camera conversation. After that, she swore she would use it every time.
Now, I have heard one story where someone did pull one of the HD1 cameras out at a major event and the security gave the guy a doubletake--but as soon as he saw the screen sticking out, he knew it was a camera.
I just don't think it is as big of a concern as you make it out to be.
sonicwind @ Sep 3rd 2008 2:34PM
I've taken the HD1000, which looks identical, through airport security many times. And not in my ass, either. I thought Engadget was instituting a moron filter on comments. No wait, that was Gizmodo, except the filter is reversed.
ben @ Sep 4th 2008 3:38PM
Here is an example of the slo-mo feature in action:
http://www.vimeo.com/1353026
It works as advertised but it's important to point out that you can only shoot in this mode at a lower resolution (roughly 400 something pixels wide) so it's not hi-def.
Also, having owned the camera for a few months, I can tell you that this feature would be FANTASTIC if I could very quickly toggle back and forth to it (it takes a few clicks through the menu)...a dedicated button for this would be very nice. I'm realistic though, this camera is SMALL and it's not like there is a ton of room for buttons on it.
the006iceman @ Sep 19th 2008 2:26AM
ben,
there is a little known feature in the Xacti cameras that allows you to program things like this to come up just by doing a combination of arrows on the menu button area. I called and asked them to tell me how to make it so I can switch to manual focus without always going to the menus, and they told me how to do it right away (and it was listed in the manual, i just never really bothered to look). You can program the keys you use most and assign them a hotkey. You should look into that and see if it works.
