Hitachi delivering UltraThin 1.5-inch thick 50-inch plasma
Hitachi's "UltraThin" line of TVs might not be the skinniest on the block anymore, but a new top of the line 50-inch plasma (CES prototype pictured above) keeps the size crown in their camp. Expect the Thin is In tagline to be a centerpiece for Hitachi's booth at CEDIA, we'll try to get some specs and in person pics (including the ubiquitous iPhone comparo) when we stop by later.

Wow, That's what I call "thin".

1.5 inches are you serious? This TV could do with a little binge and purge, it's chubby around the bum! I bet it's tired of being called fat by all the other tv's and is about to say F that.

Why has the iPhone become the new unit of measurement?
Im sure Engadget does it just to enrage the Apple haters even more.
Joost @ Sep 4th 2008 10:43AM
Soon they'll write down measurements in iPhone. For example: "the Hitachi UltraThin Plasma measures 9 x 2,4 x 1,2 iPhone, and is blabla...".
That'll be a sad day.

I'm waiting till NASA unveils a new space shuttle and they hold up an iPhone for comparison, heh.

Please don't. It's unbelievable, you guys compare this damn phone with everything. Did you compare it to your genitals too ?
John @ Sep 4th 2008 10:05AM
You know, as much as using the "Imperial" system might irk Europeans, I think even they might agree that that is preferable to comparing the dimensions of a TV to a phone.
bob sakamano @ Sep 4th 2008 10:07AM
that wouldn't be wise for them to put all that 3g (or lack there of) reception that close to their privates
Jeff @ Sep 4th 2008 10:06AM
...my **** is as long as the 2 iphones.
g @ Sep 4th 2008 10:48AM
Stop measuring your girls **** and calling it yours.

does 1.5 inch qualify as thin anymore ?
Think_tanker @ Sep 4th 2008 11:02AM
Lets see...1.5 inch plus the depth of the stand (probably 7 or 8 inches in itself) or a 4 inch mounting bracket doesn't constitute any substantial benifit. I wouldn't be all that excited about thinness of it if it sacrifices performance to achieve this "anorexic goal".
OgreMustCrush @ Sep 4th 2008 11:39AM
I think it would be funny to market an "ultrathick" plasma. It should be somewhere around 2 feet deep for the 42" model. It could contain like 6 stacked plasma panels each for rendering a different color... it would be awesome.
Jon @ Sep 4th 2008 5:10PM
...but you still watch the TV from the front...
now:
"How big's your TV?"
"42 inches. yours?"
"50 inches"...
and in a few years' time:
"How thin's your TV?"
"2 inches. yours?"
"1.5 inches"...
