Canon starts teaser campaign, evolved 5D expected

Canon just launched its teaser campaign dubbed, "Destined Evolution." There's no way at this point to know for sure, but that certainly looks like a compact, full-frame 5D body (pictured after the break) given the button locations, mode dial, and seemingly lack of a pop-up flash. Three years since the 5D was originally launched, Photokina suddenly can't come soon enough.

I know... I hope it has some *major* breakthroughs. Canon has always led the DSLR pack but have seem to lost their thunder recently. (Read: Nikon D300 vs. 50D and Sony A900)

I cant afford one but I am in the market for an elph. I hope the new elphs have higher zooms and HD video.

Mmmmm.... My 5D is my most precious gear I've ever owned, and after 3 years its IQ is still top-notch. Just until recently Nikon managed to make a worthy competitor (the D700). The 5D Mark II will set a new standard again, Im sure.

Actually, it's called "Kiss X" and "Kiss X2" in Japan only. It's 400D and 450D in Europe.

Dont Expect the 5D MKII to move the game on like the original did and don't expect the D700 to overshadowed. I have a review at home of the D3 vs the 1Ds MKIII and they stated in that report that the D3 images were better despite the difference in resolution. I am still interested to see what the specs are though and this can only be a good thing for Canon shooters.

Not quite. In Europe everything is listed as the EOS, but in the US and Japan (other markets IDK) the entry level cameras don't use the EOS branding. In Japan they are Kiss, and in the US/Canada they are Rebel. IIRC, the 400D is called the Kiss XSi in the US and Kiss X2 in Japan. Why? Who knows. But the 40D is marketed the same everywhere.

vinnythefish - the 400D is the XTi in the US not Kiss Xsi as you mentioned. The 450D is called the Xsi in the US.

As far as EOS not being used on the Entry level (Rebel cameras) in the US that is not entirely true.
Begining with the XSi they are using EOS, same goes for the 1000D (on Canon's US website they are listed as EOS Rebel XSi and EOS Rebel XS). The XTi is listed as Digital Rebel XTi. I see this as an indication that Canon is slowly looking at pushing the EOS name for the entry level. People will still called them Rebels for a while though I'm sure.

On my XTi it has EOS written on the top and the Rebel XTi badge in the lower corner. The strap that came with it has Canon EOS Digital written in huge letters.

People call them Rebels probably because it's easier to remember and because EOS isn't an actual model but the entire line name. The original Rebel, the Rebel XT and the Rebel XTi _all_ have the EOS name, we just don't call them with it.

EOS = Electronically Operated Shutter.

All of their SLRs (film and digital) are EOS-series cameras, though nowadays the moniker is a little silly; probably kept around for its recognizability.

If you go to Canon's website, use screen capture and paste into Photoshop, blow up the leveling/contrast to really high, you can see there is something blocked in front of the camera. Looks like a 'Window folder with scrollbar'. I guess the Flash designer forgot to hide some layers during publishing =)

Internal Stabilization would be redundant to the stabilization that are built into lenses. A900 is sweet but I've been waiting on this damn camera for a long time and I'm getting it.

And if you download a photo of a product teaser, blow up the leveling/contrast, you might be able to see how you spend waaay too much time on the computer with this sort of stuff. ;)

Yeah, thats why that fact was used as criteria to determine that this image is likely of a pro-level camera; judging by the small body, it's most likely the 7d/ 5d mark II/ w/e they call it

one word: better ******n AF. Nikon's "midrange" AF has thrashed canon's "midrange" (really almost identical to what is in their low end cameras) AF for far too long. now add in the fact that the D700 has pro-AF and I will be seriously pissed if the new 5D doesn't up its game. Forget little details like HDMI output and who can add 1/2 a megapixel to the output, go back to the basics and give me a camera that actually auto focuses quick enough for me to get the shot at any resolution!

Either way I want me some High ISO performance, shooting weddings indoors when flash is not permitted is a pain in the backside at iso 800 & f/2.8


Someone also mention the D300 Vs. the 50D - well funny that, the 50D ain't out yet, and according to the specs on paper...it beats it...Sure the D300 does 8fps with the grip, but its basically the same beast as the 50D at 6fps/6.3fps.

Also 50D outputs at 14bit D300 can't shoot for sh!t at 14bit!


5DMkII 18MP Better AF, 100% viewfinder, 720p/1080p Movie Mode (It is well cool, and would be handy if there was no recording limit), ISO 6400 native, hi 12,800 hi2 iso 25,600. CLEAN images at 1600/3200 (reasonably clean anyway) and useable 6400.
