Lenovo's IdeaPad S10 unboxed to yawns, fuller bank accounts
We're still having trouble spotting anything on the Lenovo IdeaPad S10 more special than its price point or that most excellent short film, but that is one special price point, so let's give the thing a chance to wow us with an unboxing...
Hrm. Nope. Not wowed.

What's not to like? What does it lack that the other netbooks have? If I was in the market for an ultraportable Hackbook, this would be my starting point.
Adderz @ Sep 9th 2008 10:40AM
@mike
thats the thing..it doesnt lack or add anything. Bland city.
In saying that, this would be my second choice after the Aspire One.
Mike @ Sep 9th 2008 10:44AM
In your haste, did you perhaps fail to note "the unique design of cooling air," or that "button design is very brief?"
Mike @ Sep 9th 2008 10:46AM
Yeah, the Aspire One is nice. HP's Mininote would have been my first choice if it had an Atom processor and didn't threaten to burn my hand off.
Ryan @ Sep 9th 2008 10:55AM
@ Intellectual and Open Minded:
Stop fucking trolling. I report every one of your posts. You get nothing but low ranks here and for a good reason. I can feel your negative impact on this community. You're a bit like the "First" dude, except you write even more and are evenly annoying.
avester @ Sep 9th 2008 10:55AM
It isn't even a good knockoff, I mean, it lacks the high price, and the Apple logo!
Ryan @ Sep 9th 2008 11:06AM
Mike, your avatar looks like a butt crack.
Just sayin'/
avester @ Sep 9th 2008 11:06AM
ryan: If buttcracks have handles, I'd be a bit worried...
Kris @ Sep 9th 2008 11:08AM
@Ryan, you're an idiot. Trolls troll for one reason: to get people fired up. You did _exactly_ what he wanted you to. Good job. Next time, just ignore him.
Chris @ Sep 9th 2008 12:01PM
Well it does have an express card slot, which is very uncommon in netbooks presently.
Ryan @ Sep 9th 2008 12:09PM
Why do so many people use just their first names as their Engadget user names?
Quit stealing my thunder, Ryan!
BluesK1d @ Sep 10th 2008 10:24AM
@Adderz
What does it add? It adds Lenovo's reputation for superior quality and it does it at a reasonable price.
Skemo @ Sep 9th 2008 10:40AM
I dunno about you, but I'm actually really looking forward to the S10. Quality keyboard + express card slot have gotten my attention.
gibber9583 @ Sep 9th 2008 11:21AM
Thank you!
Why all the hatred and non-excitement about this product. Its as good as all the rest, but its a freaking Lenovo. They make quality products. I ordered mine day 1.
R @ Sep 9th 2008 11:52AM
Exactly! This is the only netbook with an Express Card slot. Perfect for mobile broadband cards. Sure, there are USB mobile broadband adapters.. but why waste a USB port? :)
Ryan @ Sep 9th 2008 12:02PM
I ordered mine day one as well. I'm using it as a typewriter for the most part, so a quality keyboard is a must, and Lenovo knows quality keyboards if nothing else. I fully expect that I will be satisfied with my purchase, especially given the wonderful price point.
cjstuff @ Sep 9th 2008 5:58PM
Keyboard + express card slot is why I opened the pocket book for one of these, too. I love my eee 701, but the idea of a more usable keyboard and wireless broadband--well, that's what I need.
Darkroom @ Sep 9th 2008 10:44AM
is that really a coffee table made of old tires? seriously?
Mike @ Sep 9th 2008 10:52AM
I think what we're seeing here is pictures of a netbook taken in a tire-fitment center. That way it starts to make sense ... sort of.
KilgoreTrout @ Sep 9th 2008 11:48AM
Yes, it is.
It's not surprising though: if you are dumb enough to buy this lenovo intead of the better priced, better spec'd, and better looking MSI wind (or Medion miniAkoya) , it's no wonder that someone managed to sell you some old tyres claiming that they really are a new concept of coffe table.
By the way , I've got a very nice looking bridge to sell in San Francisco...
Ryan @ Sep 9th 2008 12:03PM
Right, the MSI which baited with quality parts and then switched them for crap? No thanks. I like Synaptic touchpads in my laptops.
bidur @ Sep 9th 2008 10:46AM
lenovo rocks...
i mean it is hard and strong as rock ;)
Mike @ Sep 9th 2008 10:50AM
Erm, you're thinking of ASUS which is rock solid and heart touching. Wrong China, china.
Kiehl @ Sep 9th 2008 11:08AM
ISn't this the first netbook with Intels X4000 graphicschip in it? Instead of using the ol GMA ones?
Kris @ Sep 9th 2008 11:10AM
That was a typo on Lenovo's part. Otherwise it would be an insane deal.
Steph-Chan @ Sep 9th 2008 11:11AM
Nope, that was a typo. Basically a cut and paste. No CD-rom, no GMA 4000.
bioadam @ Sep 9th 2008 11:39AM
I was pulling out my credit card when I saw the false specs on Lenovo's website. The fools gold of kick-a integrated graphics (an oxymoron to be sure) would have bridged the gap between stuttering video and a portable HD media player. And think of how well compiz would have run! Alas . . . no.
cmil1212 @ Sep 9th 2008 11:12AM
You're all a bunch of girls these days consumed with looks over anything else. It's why we see such crap devices now because you all go for the shiny black plastic crap. Why worry about how something is used or how it performs? Nope..a bunch of a girls..
Ryan @ Sep 9th 2008 12:06PM
I'm pretty sure I bought this gadget for the keyboard and Express Card slot, not the looks. But thanks for correcting me!
KilgoreTrout @ Sep 9th 2008 12:47PM
First of all come spec's and practicality ( obviously) but if I have the option of using my hard earned cash on something that does'nt offend my æstetic sensibilty every time I look at it, or maybe even something decent looking, all the better, isn't it?
I bought a MSI wind (reincarnated with the Medion brand) because it's the best netbook on the market and specially because I really needed a netbook.
If the Dell would have been a better machine I would surely overlooked its awful looks; and if acer or Lenovo or Asus or HP would have matched the Medion's specs I would have bought their wares down at the mall instead of having to furiously bet for a mini Akoya on eBay.
If I would have minded just the looks or the "bling & Flash factor" , Gigabyte's 10" convertible tablet PC would have been the obvious choice.
But in the end one is bound to discover that in the netbook class the best machine, best performance/value and best looks happen to converge all on the very same product:namely the Medion elaboration of the MSI wind which is sold under the "mini Akoya" name.
10", 2GBddr2, bluetooth, WIFI, 80 or 120 GB hd, under 1KG, winXP, best in class k-board, touch pad & ergonomics, 3 years full factory guarantee, etc.etc. etc. , where else are you gonna find all that toghether with top notch build quality?
Yes, I have carefully considered every option on the marked and because of its performance I had to buy the nicest looking netbook to date.
And if you need a netbook and you've got some sense (not just the æstetic kind) you should do the same.
Kiehl @ Sep 9th 2008 11:15AM
No X4000 then? WEAK! I had hopes this was the one to separate itself from the rest of the flock.
PHO @ Sep 9th 2008 11:16AM
Ya know what, for 400 dollars I bought a compaq laptop last year with a larger screen and very similiar system specs, I guess you are paying for the smaller size? I suppose its a descent price, but until its in Best Buy and the guys in blue say its a good to go... then may it stay in China!
LOL @ the old tire coffee table!!!!
Samus Aran @ Sep 9th 2008 11:26AM
What does Best Buy have to do with this? Best Buy sucks eggs.
ben @ Sep 9th 2008 11:44AM
I find your hesitation regarding the S10, waiting for Best Buy to bless the transaction, very ironic. Best Buy has quite a record of mistreating and misleading its customers.
So, really, waiting for Best Buy to tell you the S10 is a very silly notion.
Samus Aran @ Sep 9th 2008 11:26AM
Why doesn't this have a Tarckpoint? I would be all over it if it had the nip.
anon @ Sep 9th 2008 11:18AM
I love the translation:
"the Lenovo brand new Lenovo IdeaPad S10 of the Internet"
Sounds like a superhero!
k2001 @ Sep 9th 2008 11:23AM
That why translator still have their job.
LarryLarryLarry @ Sep 9th 2008 3:41PM
"on Below is delivered to your opening as detailed"'
This has to be written by someone at Engadget.
Weeze-dog @ Sep 9th 2008 11:18AM
What it adds is ease of upgradablity. 2 screws and you have access to the ram and hard drive, unlike the Wind or Aspire One which require full disassembly. Plus is has a 10" screen (Aspire One is 8.9) and express card 34 slot, which only the HP 2133 has (though the 2133 is express card 54).
With the coupon that was used I got it for $360 making it one of the best deals.
Sean @ Sep 9th 2008 11:36AM
I would definitely be ordering this right now... if I could. I'm not in the instant gratification business, but I'm not going to wait 8 weeks for this thing.
ryan @ Sep 9th 2008 12:41PM
I ordered in day one and Lenovo still has no idea when mine is going to ship
ipporek @ Sep 9th 2008 11:44AM
Upgradablity... prob is still no one knows whether it can somehow accomodate 2GB of RAM.
cjstuff @ Sep 9th 2008 5:57PM
I believe that the Atom architecture (i.e., the system boards and such) don't recognize more than the first gig of memory. Hence, you see lots of 1-gig configurations and zero 2-gig configurations. Intel doesn't want to steal too much business away from the "real" laptop (i.e., processor) market.
schmidt @ Sep 9th 2008 12:11PM
It does not look that bad there, I have read up the review of the lady from laptop magazine, well sounds impressive enough to me. I have heard a lot about the durability reputation of Lenovo laptops, so the price given for this netbook is not that bad, I want to try it out. Does anyone know where I can buy this S10 in Germany ?
Kenster @ Sep 9th 2008 12:17PM
If you notice on the box of the S10, it said 1GB of ram and 160GB hard drive. That's really nice, but the ones being sold in the US is 80GG HDD and 512GB of ram for 439, WTF.
Rick @ Sep 9th 2008 6:12PM
Us round-eyes always get the short end of the stick (or RAM).
nxp3 @ Sep 9th 2008 11:10PM
Yeah I ordered one of these when you guys posted that it had free cdrom and better graphics card. After they sent me a letter saying it wasn't the case, I canceled it. The thing was they sent me another email that they are processing my order. I had to call them again to make sure they canceled it. Lucky I didn't buy it...seem like it was an impulse buy. Nothing extraordinary about it. Got an eeepc for the GF and she likes it, but keyboard is just way too smal for me, I wonder if these are any better.
atbnet @ Sep 9th 2008 12:33PM
That's great! But my estimated shipping date is 10/29/2008. Hurry up Lenovo!
Conrad @ Sep 9th 2008 12:50PM
Looks good to me. I'd get one if I had a use for a netbook.
KilgoreTrout @ Sep 9th 2008 12:54PM
You see guys? That's just the kind of folks that keep the likes of Dell and HP afloat
