ATI Radeon HD 4670 and 4650 released, tested
ATI just announced its new mainstream graphics cards, the Radeon HD 4670 and 4650. At the heart of both cards is a 55nm 320-core TeraScale GPU, which is a modified version of the RV770 chip found in the Radeon HD 4800 series -- it's a lower spec chip, but it has essentially the exact same feature set. The $80 HD 4670 has 512MB of GDDR3 RAM, while the $60 HD 4650 uses 512MB of GDDR2 memory; both are relatively power-sipping with 60 watt and 50 watt draws respectively under full load. Should be out soon -- HotHardware just tested an HD 4670 and found it to be quite a performer, check it all out at the read links.

Released, tested...fried, recalled, RMA'd, lost, partially refunded, rinse, repeat.
burriot_avatar @ Sep 10th 2008 1:10PM
This is ATI, not NVIDIA... oh wait NVIDIA doesn't recall or partially refund any of their cards. 3 ATI cards and counting and I've never had an issue.
iRawr @ Sep 10th 2008 1:15PM
NVIDIA is for n00bs who don't know anything about graphics cards
PM @ Sep 10th 2008 1:16PM
Umm...I think you are confused for an nVidia card. I've had a Radeon 9200 (still do), and an X1600...and never had a problem even ONCE. I also sadly happen to have an 8600M GT on my MacBook Pro....while it's still a good card, I've noticed a lot of uncalled glitches in games. Same goes with my GeForce 7600GT on my desktop at home. Cheap.
iRawr @ Sep 10th 2008 1:18PM
PM, see previous post

@ iRawr
I meant my comment towards "Markus"
john @ Sep 10th 2008 1:55PM
The question is, will it run for president?
indeed @ Sep 10th 2008 2:07PM
Well, I had both Nvidia and ATI and never had a problem with either.
Fanboyism is stupid
PM @ Sep 10th 2008 1:14PM
Yes, common ATI/AMD. I still have hope.
1234321 @ Sep 10th 2008 1:22PM
what are you waiting for, they already rocked with the $200-$300 HD 4850/70
now this card kills the $100 9500GT
$20 cheaper, double the performance
toleraen @ Sep 10th 2008 4:33PM
Seconded on the 4850/4870. At that price point (got my 4850 for $150), they're way out in front of nvidia.
c. thomas @ Sep 10th 2008 1:15PM
Please, no Crysis or Doom affiliated comments....
burriot_avatar @ Sep 10th 2008 1:21PM
But will Doom play Crisis in a blender?
Zal @ Sep 10th 2008 1:22PM
I think you just made one.
PM @ Sep 10th 2008 1:24PM
@ burriot_avatar
No, please no, just stop, for the sake of saving your intelligence.
burriot_avatar @ Sep 10th 2008 1:26PM
I can't help it. It's an addiction.
Cal @ Sep 10th 2008 1:46PM
That's what she said
What else have we missed out? First?
burriot_avatar @ Sep 10th 2008 2:46PM
@Cal
I for one welcome our DoomCrisisiPhone overlords first.
Ninjakamster (PS360 FTW!) @ Sep 10th 2008 1:18PM
After being an Nvidia fanboy for quite a while, I've finally switched to ATI, their current cards are fantastic, especially for the price, great value.
I'm also waiting for their ATI XGP tech to come out, external graphics for notebooks but sadly, they'll need a proprietary connector and will only be on AMD Puma notebooks for now.
ATI yes, AMD not really. : /
Abbey @ Sep 10th 2008 2:09PM
I think these cards offer a tremendous value considering what nvidia charges. J&R has some great prices on them btw!!
ATI FTW!!!

Eh not really, newegg beats the price on the '50 by 30 bucks and ewiz by like $20 on the '70.
bryceman @ Sep 10th 2008 1:20PM
Will is play Starcraft 2?
iRawr @ Sep 10th 2008 1:22PM
As long as you stick with ATI not NVIDIA

Dr Zoidberg @ Sep 10th 2008 1:52PM
I truly mean this in the nicest way possible, but, what a nagging bitch.
Hellaphunt @ Sep 10th 2008 2:10PM
Yes, naggy... and a bitch. I don't think I'm better than anyone, but when I hear about close-minded, brain-washed, bible-thumpers - I cannot free myself from the overwhelming feeling that yes, I am better than someone.
absinthe party @ Sep 10th 2008 2:33PM
I was going to say the exact same thing as Dr. Zoidberg but eh.. I didn't want to offend anybody
Graham @ Sep 10th 2008 1:35PM
So I have 2 1950 pros in a crossfire config. But my multi-monitors (I have 3 wide screens running at 1680x1050) and I really would like Crossfire X, should I go for this card, or just buy two 4850s?
AlphaTeam @ Sep 10th 2008 2:11PM
This is a midrange mainstream card, not a gaming card. Running in Crossfire may be better than your 1950, but it might be better to get 1 4850 x2 or something like that.
Graham @ Sep 10th 2008 11:31PM
@AlphaTeam
Still, looking the benchmarks for games like Crysis, and Half life, a Crossfired 4670, was coming close in benchmarks to a single 4850.
Yes I'm a gamer, but I also use my PC for work, and I really don't want to break the bank here.. Gaining CrossfireX is important so that all my monitors take advantage of both cards. With my current 1950s, only one screen can take advantage of the two cards (because they only use the older crossfire).
The way I see it:
Crossfire X with 4870s, near $600
Crossfire X with 4850s near $400
Crossfire X with 4670s near $160 (and you get near the performance of a single 4850)
Also look, and the diminishing return you get with Crossfire X on the 4850 or 4870 as compared to the 4670... It's significant.
Thoughts?
Ian @ Sep 10th 2008 2:06PM
Which are the ATI Cards which OEM's sell with the CableCard functionality?
Thanks
David S @ Sep 10th 2008 2:31PM
CableCard has little to nothing to do with Video Cards. ATi just happens to make the TV Tuner you plug a CableCard into. You can mix a CableCard tuner and a decent nVidia card, such as a 8600GT.
Han Solo @ Sep 10th 2008 2:09PM
I would bet these will be the next ATI parts that Apples uses in the iMac.
David S @ Sep 10th 2008 2:35PM
HDMI 7.1 audio for less than $80 FTW! This is the perfect card for a non-gaming HTPC.
absinthe party @ Sep 10th 2008 2:36PM
Whoa whoa whoa!1!!1
What's up with the sudden fading out of the Low Ranked and the bold-faced type of the Highly and Highest Ranked? Were the blaring red and green letters just not enough?
c. thomas @ Sep 10th 2008 3:04PM
@burriot_avatar: I was joking, he was playing and you killed it.
U KILLJOY
Josiah @ Sep 10th 2008 3:26PM
Now will these be crossfire compatible with the 4850/4870? I was wondering cause i want to build a pc but really will only use the 4650 now and maybe add a 4850 later to it when the time comes. I know the 4650 won't help the 4850 that much but I would feel like I didn't throw $80 away by doing that
C.A. @ Sep 11th 2008 8:47AM
Does anyone know where I can find the 4670? I can't find it or when it's released anywhere...
Unknown @ Sep 11th 2008 10:17AM
They have them on Newegg.com. That is the only place I have been able to find them thus far. Hopefully, there will be more vendors soon with a lower price. Anyone know of a vendor other than Newegg selling them currently?
kj @ Sep 11th 2008 2:38PM
if my motherboard only has PCI Express x16
not 2.0 x16
will this still work? and will it work good?
or do i have a better option?
thanks!
sixtyfps @ Sep 16th 2008 3:55AM
I don't have PCIe 2.0, and I got this card installed today (Sapphire-branded 4670 from NewEgg). I just tried Bioshock again, and yes, it's worth it to upgrade. I'm running on the 'high' profile... and I can play this game as it was envisioned... FINALLY.
*flips 'Geforce 7900GS Go' the bird and kicks sand over it* It looks like my XPS 410 factory mobo has found the video-card with which it will be buried... unless I can somehow eke better performance out of this little guy in a new rig.
