HTC's Touch HD gets even more dreamy
While that 480 x 800 pixel display has everybody in a feverish pant, MoDaCo has released even more unconfirmed specs on the rumored HTC Touch HD guaranted to pound a lustful wave of disruption into your handset purchasing plans. To start with, it's listed at 115 x 62.8 x 12-mm making it almost exactly the same size as the svelt 115.5 x 62.1 x 12.3-mm iPhone 3G. That's a good start. Now slip GPS, HSDPA data, a 5 megapixel camera (no flash), stylus, microSD slot, 3.5-mm headphone jack, and 1350mAH battery into the mix and you've got the stuff of serious, WinMo fantasy. We'll know if it's all legit soon enough as MoDaCo claims a retail date by Christmas. Yes, really. Only thing missing is WiFi... and Android.

Tasty. Can I get one of those with extra fries?
Sisyphus @ Sep 11th 2008 9:39AM
If only this were on the dollar menu...
Chris Anderson @ Sep 11th 2008 1:18PM
I think this handset looks as tasty as a Zaxby's chicken finger plate..... and that's DELICIOUS, if you haven't heard of Zaxbys
Techie @ Sep 11th 2008 9:58PM
I still want some xenon flash!
ybd @ Sep 14th 2008 7:49PM
Speaking of price, people with a bit more experience with HTC than me (that's easy, I have none): based on HTC's history, how much do you think it'll cost? This is the stuff dreams are made of, but looks like dreams are the only place where I have enough funds to buy it...
Jakob @ Sep 11th 2008 5:23AM
It's no good to put a stylus between a camera and a microSD slot ;)
This sounds (and looks) like an awesome device, but god why such a huge logo on the front and why 4 buttons?
contreras @ Sep 11th 2008 5:28AM
why not? it's a more efficient use of the space...
Surur @ Sep 11th 2008 8:34AM
Despite being the exact same size as the iPhone 3G, the screen is considerably larger at 3.8 inches vs 3.5, so HTC is actually using space more efficiently than Apple.
For the measuring, see here:
http://wmpoweruser.com/?p=941
Alejandro @ Sep 11th 2008 2:21PM
Well... Suuur....
you claim they're making a more efficient use of space than Apple... yet this doesn't have wifi... so... not exactly apples to apples, huh? (5mp vs 2mp cam module take up same space --and I don't understand why the iphone is still 2 either).
Cheers
black @ Sep 11th 2008 5:14PM
Alejandro: So they can bump the camera to a 3.2 MP or a 5MP camera, and call it an improvement in later iPhones. They will probably upgrade it as often as they do with their iPods...
William @ Sep 11th 2008 4:01PM
The page that Surur links to shows that the screen is actually 4 inches, not 3.8, so it is much larger than the iPhone's.
Totalfixation @ Sep 11th 2008 5:24AM
If they can add windows mobile 7 as a future update i would be all over this.
Ike Turner @ Sep 11th 2008 5:27AM
Preach!
TareX @ Sep 11th 2008 6:17AM
WM7 = oh yeah.
Seriously, this phone is fantastic, except for that WM6.1 lag with TouchFLO 3D. But even though, I'd gladly live with it if these specs are true. I can't believe it's smaller than the iPhone.
Makes you wonder what kind of monster HTC will produce when WM7 and Tegra processors are out.
Ruben @ Sep 11th 2008 7:20AM
The lag is eliminated via the newest HTC roms as well as the cooked roms from XDA.
As far as im concerned, its a non-issue. This phone will be new enough to carry the newest rom. Im not worried about lag one bit, mainly because if HTC doesnt fix it, XDA does.
Such is the greatness of WM.
220v @ Sep 12th 2008 3:09AM
bad news: qualcomm msm7200 will probably not support the next version of windows mobile
bonaparte @ Sep 11th 2008 5:39AM
Wow, I was going to wait for an Android equipped phone for At&t to come out, but this makes me want high five Winmo. This phone looks great and I i official just told a slide out keyboard "to tell my how my screen taste"
Adderz @ Sep 11th 2008 5:37AM
This is the kind of device Android should be launching with.
WinMo will always be the achilles heel in any Smartphone unfortunately.
daevh @ Sep 11th 2008 5:37AM
Could Android run/install on a device like this easily?
CLShortFuse @ Sep 11th 2008 9:32AM
Yes, a port for the MSM 7201a has already been successfully done since the Tytn II (Kaiser/AT&T Tilt) already runs Android and has the same CPU
Steffen @ Sep 11th 2008 5:39AM
Why not making this sweety Android ready? ^^
MS @ Sep 11th 2008 11:22AM
Why is there so much excitement about bloomin' Android? I know it's from Google and everything they do is great (...yeah) but apart from not being from Mcrosoft or Apple what is there to get so excited about in a v1 (if not Beta, because all of Google seems to be beta) phone OS that will likley be as buggy as every other phone OS v1 was? Let me know when it's feature rich and stable...
Oh, the HTC looks ilke a nice handset. I had a Hermes which I liked very much till I was turned to the fruit side by the 3G, which I also like but in different ways.
Patriks7 @ Sep 11th 2008 5:39AM
now that looks awesome
give it android and ill be the first one to buy it
substance90 @ Sep 11th 2008 5:45AM
Couple it with Android and put some 16GB flash memory + extension slot and I`m sold.
Seanross @ Sep 11th 2008 5:48AM
They've already got rough test versions of android running on a few HTC devices if I'm not mistaken. I'm sure if they tried hard enough they could get it running on this.
Which would be full of win IMO
Arthur @ Sep 11th 2008 5:51AM
What intrigues me most is that the button arrangement (and the icons of the buttons) are the ones Google proposes for Android. Send/stop, backspace and home rather than the usual Windows Mobile arrangement (Start button, OK-button etc). Coincidence?
Ike Turner @ Sep 11th 2008 5:57AM
I guess you never saw any Touch Diamond/Pro pictures?
XenoX101 @ Sep 11th 2008 5:54AM
Capacitive Touchscreen?
p3ngwin @ Sep 11th 2008 9:01AM
no capacitance, it uses a stylus and WM's handwriting recognition (something not possible with capacitance, hence no stylus for iphone)
Notorious96 @ Sep 11th 2008 5:58AM
Arthur .. maybe you're right .. I think they are setting up for an Android OS sometime later in the future as an update or for T-Mobile
TareX @ Sep 11th 2008 6:19AM
That 5MP camera was definitely not expected.
lUp @ Sep 11th 2008 2:37PM
the lack of WiFi neither
MMaster23 @ Sep 11th 2008 6:22AM
Quit it with the damn Android platform remarks Engadget. Android is as overhyped as Ubuntu. It won't rock your world.
Just give me a stable and trusted OS like Windows Mobile 6.
If we are jumping in the deep, let's jump in Windows Mobile 7.
g00n @ Sep 11th 2008 3:28PM
This guy is dead on. I hope Android turns out great but it will be a rough gen. 1 OS when it comes out. It will have a fraction of the support and software that WinMo 6.1 or 7 will have. If you use your phone for actual business and need to rely on core business features you will not be jumping on the iphone or android bandwagon anytime soon. It is very clear (and well documented) that the iPhone fails as a serious business / IT phone. This is not a slam on iphone or android - it is simply a reminder of the well known limitations these OS's face. This could change in the future but we arent there yet and we wont be there in 6 months.
This reminds me of all the Google Chrome hype. Chrome is a rough, limited browser. Firefox can do everything it does and then some...better. Yet you have this huge massive hype. We all love google but you have to look at things realistically.
A beefy spec'd phone with WinMo 6.1 or 7 will be the "most functional" choice for a while. Notice I didnt say "most popular, most stylish, or most trendy." If you truly think Android or iphone's OS is better than WinMo 6.1 or 7 then you havent pushed the Winmo OS to it limits and seen the potential its software support offers. It just has a huge head start - that's all.
oZ @ Sep 11th 2008 11:14PM
I was with you until you said 'stable and trusted'. Let's be realistic -- Blackberry's OS, iPhone's OS, and even Symbian are more stable and reliable than WinMo 6.
kappen @ Sep 20th 2008 6:40PM
quick comment about the guy who says firefox can do everything chrome can do. Your right except the one cool thing about crome that the mass media is missing at least is the fact that every browser tab runs in its own process so you can kill an individual process to kill just a single tab. This is important when you start using a browser to run online applications. but of course this if off topic :)
Neeko @ Sep 11th 2008 6:29AM
Damnit! i was all ready to buy a diamond pro now this gets leaked. I just wanna kno what carrier is gonna get this.. If it not sprint ill just keep it moving and get what i planned on buying. But if theres a hint at sprint then you can take my $$ NOW.
Ill wait till XMAS if its coming to sprint. But i need my WIFI for tethering. Dont skimp on WIFI HTC. Looks like ill be holding on to my mogul a little longer.
deepBLUE @ Sep 11th 2008 5:04PM
go get your touch pro unless you want to wait 6 ~ 8 month. this phone is GSM only, won't be coming to sprint. there may be a refresh for CDMA version, but will be 3 ~ 4 month after launch of GSM version.
famm113 @ Sep 11th 2008 9:45PM
I am right there with you. I was all set to buy the diamond and then they come out with this and now I'm like if sprint will get this phone I will wait and hold off. I wish they can state which carriers are getting this phone so I can make up my mind.
vannyx @ Sep 12th 2008 4:57PM
i am in the same boat as you.
Bchau @ Sep 11th 2008 6:44AM
Yes, it has WiFi.
As for the size, it is a bit large for my liking now that I have used Diamond for sometime. I like that Diamond is so compact and pocket friendly. However, for those who wouldn't mind a larger phone and not needing a keyboard, Touch HD is definitely the best so far.
And yes WM6.1 rocks. Solid and reliable. Funny many people asks for Android when I suspect many of the same poeple haven't even play with or even seen Android yet. Talking about marketing hype.
Will H. @ Sep 11th 2008 6:49AM
WinMo is a good mobile OS for many people, as there are applications and such that are made for winmo. Android and Apples mobile OS are very nice mobile platforms as well, but what is important is that this phone looks really great.
TareX @ Sep 11th 2008 7:35AM
WM 6.1 doesn't "rock". Maybe it does with 2002 standards. But now, it's the slowest mobile OS. Windows Mobile in general (before wm7) was written with the PocketPC in mind, and not the smartphone.
Forget what I said. Put the iPhone next to the Diamond and let's compare the time between touch input and animation rendering. Incomparable.
Nothing I say about Android will be backed by any hands-on, but from the I/O hands on, we know it's fast, and very resourceful. Also Google earned its reputation with everything it's done so far (Earth, maps, mail, docs... oh and that search thing ppl talk about)
whatishalo? @ Sep 11th 2008 12:44PM
Google has a search thing? I thought they just did email. Wow...cool. What will they think of next? (probably something super future sci-fi like online spreadsheets)
TareX @ Sep 11th 2008 11:38PM
Too big? It's smaller and thinner than the iPhone. Mind you, this is a touchscreen-only phone so you need space for reasonable typing. Typing, is the worst possible thing on the Diamond.
vaan @ Sep 11th 2008 6:45AM
Niiice, but after 4years bad Winmo experience this is simply not an option ;(
purezerg @ Sep 11th 2008 6:58AM
yeah. this is not an option. this is a must.
sam @ Sep 11th 2008 6:43AM
Release with winmo7 and we'll talk.
p3ngwin @ Sep 11th 2008 9:03AM
winmo 7 releases H1 of 2009, you want to wait for this phone until then?
or
as it meets the minimum RAM requirement of winmo 7, that is 256mb RAM, then you can get it sooner with winmo 6.1 and update to winmo 7 next year.
better?
Paul @ Sep 11th 2008 7:16AM
This does have WiFi!
