Is ASUS prepping a 5-megapixel Omnia challenger?
It looks like ASUS has more in store when it comes to touchscreen phones than that P552w we saw the other day. According to pictures leaked to the Mobile01 forums, the company is planning an Omnia-esque device that will feature a large (WQVGA or WVGA) touchscreen, a 5-megapixel camera, a trackball for non-touch navigation, and the predictable 3G radios / WiFi. Not much is known about the device at this point, though speculation is running rampant on the forum as to CPU specs and on-board memory. It's likely this will be at least competitive in comparison to recent Window Mobile devices we've seen of this variety, though nothing's certain till we get word from ASUS... which we're waiting patiently for, fellas.

from the image it looks like WQVGA
looks like there's no one challenging HTC's dominance but HTC themselves
Stephen @ Sep 14th 2008 6:17PM
And people's stupidity as to just how much HTC's Phones do...
Me: You shoudl get the HTC touch for your next phone.
Idiot: Nah, i want an iPhone.
Me: Why?
Idiot: Because it does more than any other phone.
Me: The HTC touch does a TON more than the iPhone, as do most other WM based phones
Idiot: I've never even heard of HTC...
Me: You should look into them.
Idiot: Nah, thats too much trouble
Me: Well good luck with that horrible signal. *tries not to puch the idiot*
Abuzar Baloach @ Sep 14th 2008 6:30PM
Stephen, how about you leave them alone? Wanting to punch someone because they buy a certain phone?
While Windows Mobile is a very good OS(I personally like it better than Blackberry and iPhone, but I've never used the Nokia smartphone OS), but it is a bit clunky. For people who want to do basic things like browse facebook/myspace, check their email on the go, and just make phone calls the iPhone is nice. Plus it has storage(yes, I know YOU want your whole 500GB music collection on there, but for most people 8GB is fine) for music on the go and the GPS comes in handy every once in a while.
Abuzar Baloach @ Sep 14th 2008 6:31PM
Oh and the username "iPhone" guy is a much bigger idiot...
Aguiluz @ Sep 14th 2008 6:35PM
Me: A laptop can kick the iPhone and Windows Mobile's arse. It's got WiFi, EDGE or whatever mobile internet, Wired Ethernet, BIG screen, full keyboard, a real mouse, Lots of HD space and this one I got last year for $399. You can copy paste, lots of freeware open source apps and Skype for IM and VoIP. Shame I ripped my pants pocket trying to put it in.
matthew @ Sep 14th 2008 6:48PM
@iPhone
"Me: You should get the iphone touch for your next phone."
iPhone Touch? Not starting terribly well. Maybe it'l get better...
"Idiot: Nah, i want an htc phone
Me: Why?
Idiot: Because it does more than any other phone.
Me: The iphone does a TON more than any htc peice of crap, and it has the best phone and mobile computer OS ever"
No it doesn't. It does less than an HTC phone from what, 5 years ago? at least. And you're calling it BETTER than XP or Ubuntu etc for mobile computing? because in my experience that term includes netbooks....
"Idiot: I've never even heard of iphone
Me: Your lying, everyone has heard of iphone, its the fastest selling internet device"
That's because it's ONE DEVICE. Windows Mobile or even HTC devices are, overall, selling probably faster and CERTAINLY steadier than the iPhone.
"Idiot: yeah, but it doesnt even have copy/paste right?
Me: how often do you use copy/paste on your phone? *tries not to puch the idiot*"
I use mine at least once every day, and I'm just a teenager, not a businessman or professional
"me: plus, it surfe\s the web better than any other phone, comes with built in wi-fi, has build in itunes store, has an amazing OS, and has over 3,000 professionally made application in an easy-to-use built in store, with a lot for free! Now tell me if winmo can do all of that?"
FLASH. JAVA. Ok it's smooth, but it's not "the real interet". Opera Mobile does that better.
WiFi? PAH. Almost every HTC device has WiFi.They've had it for a long time. They also have HSDPA that works, and now HSDPA 7.2, faster than the iPhone.
Maybe it doesn't have the store, but I for one like CODEC SUPPORT and DRAG AND DROP without relying on special software.
And its got applications. Far more than 3000. Many free. And you can make your own with no restrictions.
So yes, it can do all that. And far more.
matthew @ Sep 14th 2008 6:47PM
I wouldn't punch someone for choosing a certain phone. But I'd punch them for being a retard and doing it without considering or reasearching the competition.
1234321 @ Sep 14th 2008 6:45PM
first off, I don't care who is selling the most smartphones, numbers like that don't matter to me, HTC makes great phones whether they sell 1 million or just 1
I have an iPhone actually cause I got it for cheap but I would trade it for a Diamond any day
I would copy and paste often
there's no file browser on the iPhone, and it's hard as it to get files on it anyway
no flash support (WinMo users can watch streaming video with SkyFire, which is better than safari)
no minimize (AIM is a good example of needing it)
only real thing good about the iPhone is that it's very graphical something WinMo doesn't emphasis on even though HTC usually sticks an ATi GPU in their phones
Kennyb123 @ Sep 14th 2008 7:49PM
HTC is actually now in 3rd place when it comes to smartphone sales. Gotta love the mis-information being thrown around by someone with a name like "iphone." Like we wouldn't have any idea what your motives were...
Haikibutsu @ Sep 14th 2008 8:24PM
Ever notice how all the stupid people (Clak, iPhone, etc) always set their profile to private?
Wolfticket @ Sep 14th 2008 8:29PM
Me: Is creating a long dialogue that serves only to support my fanboy-ish point of view a good idea?
Idiot: Yes
fh @ Sep 14th 2008 9:06PM
@iPhone:
"HTC hits the big time - now 3rd biggest smartphone brand in Q208"
http://wmpoweruser.com/?p=933
And that's only counting it's self-branded devices, not ODM devices produced by HTC like the upcoming Xperia X1.
loosely_coupled @ Sep 15th 2008 4:46AM
Great looking phone, but it's destined to fail horribly since it's running Windows mobile... I don't understand why ANYONE would want to deal with that POS. I've had three different WinMo devices over the years, and I've hardly seen any improvement since the days of dedicated PocketPCs. Why can't MS make a decent phone OS? Windows mobile can't even come close to the simplicity, polish, and power of OSX.
You have to face it Apple-haters -- a jailbroken iPhone (with full access to the BSD subsystem, *nix utilities, SSH etc) is the most powerful mobile device on the market. Quit hating, and join the party!
TareX @ Sep 14th 2008 6:13PM
With all the VGA, WQVGA, and WVGA touchscreen phones coming out this season, I'll really hate it if the G1 lauches with a HVGA screen, as rumored.
But looks like Windows Mobile 6.1 is getting one hell of a farewell party this Christmas.

Any WQVGA based phones are destined to fail. They are simply not worth the price.
I really hope it's a WVGA phone.
Johan S @ Sep 14th 2008 7:05PM
Could this picture be fake? Zoom to the lower right corner of that device image.. doesn't the texture seems to shift to the smooth/polished dark black too quickly?
Johan S @ Sep 14th 2008 7:08PM
To clarify .. I am not talking about that black groove on the lower right corner side surface.. I am looking at the lower right TOP surface.
Kieran @ Sep 15th 2008 12:01AM
If you mean the part that I think you do it looks like the phone has been damaged to me. Also note how the left side of the phone is silver next to the black section at the bottom so it's a definite photoshop, probably consisting of other phones used as donors, which would also explain the 'damaged' portion.
Josh @ Sep 14th 2008 7:18PM
If they want this to compete, they'll need a nicer UI than the
standard Windows Mobile kit. Give it a nicer interface, like Samsung
or HTC, and get some deals happening with carriers [don't rely on
unlocked sales, very few people get them like that, I'm one of the
only ones that does here in Aus, at least in my circle of techy
friends], and you should have a winner on your hands.
switchbitch @ Sep 14th 2008 7:31PM

CJ @ Sep 15th 2008 8:23AM
Well, if you insist on running WM6.1 on a hacked Treo 90, then you're bound to get some lag.
EmoChicksAreHot.....Seriously @ Sep 14th 2008 7:35PM
I like the look.
But I'm gonna need a some type of keyboard with more than 1-9 + 0 on it in order for me to get it.
Ron @ Sep 14th 2008 7:44PM
This is pretty nice looking. I just wish that the windows was a little bit more responsive and reliable, otherwise it's a very great feature packed OS. I aslo hope that the 5MP camera doesn't end up in there because it's an unecessesary time and battery waister in my opinion.
taylor @ Sep 14th 2008 7:46PM
equip it with android, send it to tmobile and I am all in. Looks much better than the Htc dream G1 that I am about to buy. I wish the screen would slide to reveal full querty.

CJ @ Sep 15th 2008 8:25AM
Protip: You have five digits on each hand, and two hands with which to hold the device.
Just imagine the trackball is the screen of the oh-so-coveted iPhone; Phone held in one hand, trackball manipulated with other. Carpal tunnel circumvented!
Gilberto @ Sep 14th 2008 10:44PM
I prefer HTC because it has Windows Mobile and I use Windows in my desktop; probability I would prefer an Iphone if I had a Mac; by the way, I use copy and paste often.

it's really sad how the internet brings out the Fanboys...
I'm not going to bash on either or. Some phones work better for some people. I don't understand why you have you compare every phone with the iPhone (talking to you, iPhone fanboys) and then proceed to call the other phones crap. Get a life. Leave your basement once in a while, you may get a 3G signal then :) :p
Anyways, back to the topic. I like the phone, looks pretty decent. I'd like to play with it and get a hands on feel with the OS.

now every 1 hers is aware there is no release date for wm7 yet right
i don't think wm6 is going any were any time soon the last i news i got on it was that there going to wait to launch wm7 with windows 7
