XPERIA X1 gets demoed in Sony Ericsson webcast

Those following the XPERIA X1's every move no doubt caught this as it happened earlier today, but for those that missed it, the Inexperia website has now posted most of Sony Ericsson's latest webcast, in which the X1's interface gets shown off to a far greater extent than we've seen previously. That includes a look at the phone's much talked about panel system and a glimpse of its video-playing abilities, plus some expected gushing about the phone's design, which is described as feeling like a well-tailored suit. Head on past the break for the video courtesy of Inexperia, and look for the whole thing to be available direct from Sony Ericsson on September 17th.

that looks small compared to pictures
Richard @ Sep 15th 2008 4:52PM
Alot of these phones are like that. I just saw the Diamond, Pro, Omnia, and a number of other phones for sale unlocked at Miami International. MUCH smaller than I had anticipated. But, it beats bulky devices, especially when a good portion of the surface is the screen and not a keypad.
Richard Lai @ Sep 15th 2008 6:40PM
It's just a big hand.
Aidan @ Sep 15th 2008 7:37PM
And you know what they say about big hands. They make phones look smaller in comparison.
Mitch @ Sep 15th 2008 4:40PM
Looks nice, I hope the price Isn't through the roof on this thing.
glinden9 @ Sep 15th 2008 4:44PM
It looks irrelevant compared to the HTC Touch Pro
Johan S @ Sep 15th 2008 9:43PM
I really want this phone, and will get it. But I noticed there's quite a bit of lag. What's up with that?
Maybe when Windows Mobile 7 comes out that will be fixed?
iEye @ Sep 15th 2008 4:45PM
That movie had some serious lag... and GhOsTiNg...
I hope the final product does not require the user to have to bitch slap the screen to register an input...
TareX @ Sep 15th 2008 5:03PM
A SERIOUS lag.
While I was listening to boring Magnus (MWC's worst representative) talk about "love" and "passion", I was noticing how the phone was taking 6 seconds to fully rotate from portrait to landscape when he slid the keyboard out.
Slawek @ Sep 15th 2008 10:46PM
I'm not the only one that noticed... It was like 6 seconds
I made fun of my cousin, because his Wing took 3 seconds to flip.
Thorin78 @ Sep 15th 2008 4:46PM
wow, I can't wait to get this phone. I hope Tmobile picks it up. It seems the panels screen is slow though. the blank screen between panels is not that nice.
Neil @ Sep 15th 2008 4:47PM
I love the X1, but I have to say they sounded like asses.
The Dude @ Sep 15th 2008 5:47PM
I don't hear any farting, brah'.
Ray @ Sep 15th 2008 7:46PM
Agreed, the guy talking about the phone sounded like the douche that douchebags aspire to be
thedesolate1 @ Sep 15th 2008 8:18PM
He reminds me of the tobacco lobbyist dude of the movie "thank you for smoking". Not exactly farting but professional bullshitter.
Stranger @ Sep 16th 2008 4:05AM
I would say that comes down to the simple fact that English ain't his native language and so he's unable to correctly judge what may sound nice and what may only sound silly.
thedesolate1 @ Sep 15th 2008 5:09PM
I love how they compare it to a fine business suit but the OS is nowhere near as polished as the hardware. Thats why it was leap frogged by rim in sales last quarter.
mike @ Sep 15th 2008 4:58PM
Amateurs. Sorry, but they're unable to upgrade to Win 7, and have developed this .. bizarre... panel interface... why? Go download more panels...
eh?
Paul @ Sep 15th 2008 4:55PM
do want!
Nutsy @ Sep 15th 2008 4:56PM
Now if sony put half as much time coming up with the interface design as they did with the casing they would of had a killer mobile here...
But instead they have a great handset with a shitty laggy slow ill thought out tiled desktop system.
Please dont call me a HTC fanboy but touchflow 3d pisses all over this :/
But HTC doesnt always get it right either.
Both Sony and HTC should of completely redesigned the Winmob front end design. Keep the base kernel system but totally redesign the front end instead of just running an overlay app that has a pretty UI.
If they did a propper front end resign there GI would run faster be more reslonsive look even better and the phone would work how they want it to work.
Vagrant @ Sep 15th 2008 5:20PM
Agreed and this video confirms what I had viewed on another video of the interface...slow.
New nickname: X1SLUG (Sony Laggy User Graphics)
This phone was in the running as a solution to carrying a Tilt+iPhone, but fortunately for me and the rest of the world, HTC finally kicked out a good solution, HTC Touch HD.
Now, we all wait while someone makes a better battery, no matter what device we prefer.
shawndh @ Sep 17th 2008 9:52AM
Agreed. I'm not as technical as you, but I've said the same thing. Just revamp the WM interface so that it doesn't look anything like WM. (boring)
And that phone is just slow as all get out! They can't be dropping that phone running like that. Looks like HTC wins again. I'll be considering an Omnia or one of the several new HTC devices: HD, Touch Pro, Diamond, Touch 3G, ect. They all look better than this, functionality wise. The only thing it has going for it is it's build quality. I wish HTC would put more into their build quality, then they'd have an exceptional product.
CooperFBI @ Sep 15th 2008 4:57PM
Great looking phone, but demo'd by complete incompetents. Either they're afraid to show us the phone's features or they're just completely crap. Whoever put that video together needs a rocket up their arse.
silver @ Sep 15th 2008 4:57PM
hmm.. how slow can a phone be - the panels were slow, there was lag when rotating the phone, starting video player etc..
I'm worried about the overall concept. Having 9 programs running at the same time on a handheld by design? It's frightening even in theory. I'm pretty sure the videos we have previously seen of the panels interface had 9 jpg's that were flying around - thats why it was fast. Don't get me wrong - I want it to succeed, I'm just not seeing it..
TareX @ Sep 15th 2008 5:11PM
Yes that JPEG theory is almost a fact. The phone, in it's current status, has got to be the SLOWEST SMARTPHONE on the market.
Extremely slow..... extremely.
caz @ Sep 15th 2008 4:57PM
The allure of 3'rd party applications will kill the consumer in 09!
Olivier @ Sep 15th 2008 4:58PM
I don't think it look nice... Old fashion ...
The Dude @ Sep 15th 2008 5:53PM
I just don't like those back buttons on the silver-faced model. They made the black-faced model all-black, they should've gone all-silver as well.
But old fashioned? It doesn't look like this (http://img374.imageshack.us/my.php?image=oldfashionedphonebitchemn0.jpg) to me.
omoks @ Sep 15th 2008 4:59PM
With the live rumors of the Touch HD, as time goes by I'm beginning to loose interest in this phone. We've been talking about the X1 for almost 2 years now.
Malkmus @ Sep 15th 2008 8:10PM
X1 was announced in February OF THIS YEAR. Exaggerate much?
Dahk @ Sep 15th 2008 5:03PM
Jeez, this guy is seriously putting me to sleep.
He's trying to be so 'consumer-friendly' without being so 'techy' and so he ends up repeating himself and using the same words over and over again =/.
dude_1_1_1 @ Sep 22nd 2008 7:26PM
meh... too much blabber
substance90 @ Sep 15th 2008 5:05PM
Yawn, give me Android and HTC Dream!
DoomGaZer @ Sep 15th 2008 5:06PM
Somebody please take his hand and stuff it somewhere he can't block the screen.......;)
MYB @ Sep 15th 2008 5:11PM
it took around five seconds to get the screen rotated when he opened the keyboard O.O
pito189 @ Sep 15th 2008 7:53PM
That was pretty bad, the icons where still filling in as they are talking about something else.
Johan S @ Sep 15th 2008 5:13PM
They seriously need to address the responsiveness issue. It's damn annoying to have a phone with so much lag.
well weapon @ Sep 15th 2008 5:28PM
as opposed to one of those fake designers.
TrueDis @ Sep 15th 2008 5:28PM
Played with it at CTIA. Not really that impressed. Panels were still slow as molasses and that fish thing definitely isn't as cool as I was led to believe. Oh yes, and then there's the keyboard...
Mike @ Sep 15th 2008 5:33PM
Those two people the guy with the sony phone and the women are shady. They donnt wanna compare the sony phone to other compeition phones in the market(iPhone anyone). Any technical questions they were asked they like furture stuff with the phone like if it could upgrade to windows 7 they kept saying no comment. iPhone and Blackberry Storm will beat this sony phone.
Kinger @ Sep 15th 2008 5:38PM
"Has the X1 got a TV out Connection"
"no, it does not"
"Ok, great!"
thedesolate1 @ Sep 15th 2008 8:15PM
Something standard most N series devices...
Quix @ Sep 15th 2008 5:54PM
Wait, the X1 is like a "suit?" But is it chewy and delicious too, like cake? Can I eat it after I've made my call? Give me a sign, Sony, for "yes."
Sony has undoubtedly lost its way. And I'll curse my old Sony T610 phone until the day I die. Worst gadget I've ever owned.
Decoy @ Sep 15th 2008 11:11PM
I share your pain, especially when the joystick fails to register "down", "up" and the right side of the keypad ignores me. Fucking T610.
Quix @ Sep 15th 2008 11:26PM
My favorite part about the T610 was having to remove the battery 5 times a day to reboot the phone. No wonder people screamed about the lack of a removable battery in the iPhone - they assume *all* phones need constant battery-removal-rebooting like the T610.
BritGuy @ Sep 15th 2008 6:18PM
I was really looking forward to this phone but the lag in the video makes my Kaiser look like a speed freak
SE = FAIL
Whats the possibility of putting the HTC touchflo 3d on this since the harware is pretty much identical?
mongo @ Sep 15th 2008 6:28PM
I'll never buy a laggy phone again. The thing I hate most about my P1i is it's response times.
I want a fast and fluid experience and judging by the video the X1 just isn't snappy enough.
CamelClass @ Sep 15th 2008 6:26PM
oh my, what an incredibly bad demo of a reasonably interesting phone. This video just again demonstrates why I can't stand these marketing types with their endless blah blah blah and their incredible ability to waste time. How about showing the webbrowser, quickly, I didn't have the patience to wade throught this demo to see if it does flash enhanced pages. The iPhone may have its flaws but from what I've seen from this demo, there's nothing there which would make me want to switch.
Bryan MacKenzie @ Sep 15th 2008 6:56PM
Wow are u guys stupid? he had the things preloaded in background... thats 9+ applications running at the same time... if u have seen other new vids where the guy turns the phone on and then previews it the reaction time is super fast
http://www.theunwired.net/?item=videoview-hands-on-with-sony-ericsson-s-latest-xperia-x1-built
lol HTC touch pro looks like a crappy x1 copy.. slower.. less functions... ugly
MYB @ Sep 15th 2008 7:00PM
GUYS check this video out http://www.theunwired.net/?item=videoview-hands-on-with-sony-ericsson-s-latest-xperia-x1-built
made me really consider getting one!
