T-Mobile G1 said to be landing October 17th, Sprint Android phone out by 2009?
We've already been hearing that the HTC G1 (otherwise known as the Dream) would be landing on T-Mobile in late October, but VentureBeat now claims that it has further pegged the actual release date down to October 17th (it'll apparently start shipping on the 13th), which would be a tad earlier than most had expected. What's more, the site is also citing "multiple sources" claiming that Sprint's own Android phone will "definitely" be out by 2009, and that it will have "other functionality" than the Dream / G1. Ah, the endless cycle of speculation. Place your bets, folks.[Via The Boy Genius Report]

ALL is going according to plan...
@ cmil1212
Well, I've just watched the Leopard OSX Walkthrough video on the Apple website for the first time, and I can tell you the only reason we're having Windows on our computers, it because Gates was a brilliant businessman, and was able to get Windows on every computer for almost free, even though it wasn't the best.
The walkthrough video had an OS with almost Alien functionality. The only reason I won't be getting one, is -for the same stated above reason- 3rd party apps are hard to find, games don't all run well, and the Macs are not as high-speced as I'd like.
20 years ago, Jobs should have played his cards better. The OS is brilliant, but the system is too closed, and I'm already an experienced Windows user... unfortunately. But I understand why ppl make the switch. The seemless computer-sharing functionality alone is unbelievable. Not to mention the eye-candy features like the Time Machine...etc
I like it... but it came 10 years late for me.
Not much to get excited about here with a buggy OS. Plus its google whose only claim to fame is a search engine and ad driven email.
A really good search engine and a really good ad driven email. I also personally use Google Maps and Google Docs which both also happen to be exceptionally useful in my opinion.
yeah all those billions of dollars they've made.. pfft talk about flash in the pan!
Ah another friend of Doc Brown and Delorean owner from the future where people have actually seen/used version 1.0 of the OS and determined it to be subpar. Seriously what is the deal with these people that come out of the woodwork talking about Android being "buggy" or "failing to deliver" when all we have seen is little tidbits here and there of the software in various stages of betaness? Is it just the iLemmings catching a little scent of an impending predator inching closer to the herd?
@BluesKid:
Version 1.0? Seriously? Google has yet to actually release ANYTHING. Remember, GMail is still in beta.
Google has very high standards. If a service as exceptional as Gmail is still in beta, then what do you think a non-beta product (like Android will be when it is released) will be like?
@Sean
Yes, seriously. Google will not be releasing a beta phone operating sytem to the public for general sale and use. The phones will ship with at least Android 1.0. This news isn't new.
@bluesclues
Sorry dude, but like the guy above me said, gmail is still in beta. Chrome is a piece of crap still in beta. This OS will be in beta for quite awhile. Name one piece of google software you have bought. Didn't think so. They have a solid search engine but no solid revenue streams. Why? Because noone has bought a damn thing from them.
To be honest, i'd give palm's new OS a second look before google. At least they've proven themselves in the past.
Btw..i'm not a mac guy. Windows Mobile is the OS to focus on. It's already superior to anything apple has. WM7 will raise the bar even further.
Because you've obviously used the OS...right? Oh I'm sorry. You were talking out your ass....carry on. Android is going to be 100x more polished then Apple's iShit was when it came out. Why? Because testing wasn't done on the QT with all of Apple's BS games of secrecy.
@cmil1212
"gmail is still in beta."
How is it being in beta a bad thing exactly if it's more than usable?
-
"Chrome is a piece of crap still in beta."
It has its bugs and deficiencies but it came out what... two weeks ago? Maybe you didn't jump on Firefox when it just came out but it wasn't exactly flawless and its library of extensions was less than jaw dropping, it was just infinitely better than other options at the time.

"This OS will be in beta for quite awhile."
Source besides your own ass?

"Name one piece of google software you have bought. Didn't think so. They have a solid search engine but no solid revenue streams. Why? Because noone has bought a damn thing from them."
Most of their offerings are free. Their solid revenue stream is their advertising service. This past quarter they had over $5 billion in revenues. http://investor.google.com/fin_data.html

Man, I wish I wasn't burdened with the abundance of personal pride and integrity that prevents me from presenting a load of completely made up information as fact. Why don't you do a little research before you post? It should be easy, I hear the browser on the iPhone is really neat.
Ever wonder why Android is the only piece of software from Google that actually has a version number available to the public that is quickly approaching 1.0 (0.9x at the moment for the SDK)? There are videos of Android 1.0 being demoed on the tubes. Since I know you really don't know anything about software, 1.0 = Not beta.
I'm just hoping we eventually get one that doesn't look like it came out of the prop department of Gil Gerard's version of Buck Rogers.
Hopefully it'll be something I want to buy
VICTORY IS NEAR!
"...apparently start shipping on the 13th, which would be a tad earlier than most had expected."
Gotta get as much as you can on the books in the fiscal quarter window as possible!
Question to Donald Melanson: Will Engadget be covering the September 23rd T-Mobile announcement in NYC? Same front page, live blogging, rolling commentary as is afforded Apple events?
It is my opinion that Android is as important as the iPhone in terms of its impact on teh gadget market.
Trudat
If I know Engadget, and I think I do, I guess we'll have a post THE DAY AFTER saying, "To our dismay; Announced Gphone not loaded with OSX".
Seriously, either Engadget writers are investors in Apple, Inc, or they ARE board members in Apple, Inc.
@Tarex
I believe they already said they would be there liveblogging in a post yesterday...
Uh, yes! We'll be covering as much as humanly possible. Also, @TareX -- whatever. That attack is old, and yes, busted.
Is this phone 3g?
yes
Move your ass Sprint.. NH has no 3G coverage to speak of. Sprint and EVDO is the only option in these parts.
new Hampshire? who the hell is in new hampshire? Frodo?
EVDO is 3G
Really? How do people not know this by now?
this handset thing is getting out of control... and very exciting
So where is T-Mobile's 3G coverage map for the US?
Top 27 metro markets by Oct 1:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-Mobile_USA#3G_Upgrade
I've never seen any maps but I read somewhere that Las Vegas and New York are two of T-Mobiles 3G network coverage areas.
I think there's 2 blocks somewhere in New York that gets it.
That would apparently best AT&T's coverage in New York...
There isn't one because the only place that gets 3G coverage right now is NYC. YAY! >:(
@skyshock21: I'm in Minneapolis right now, surrounded by T-Mobile 3G, so that's not really accurate at all, is it?
I just love the apple addicts that want this to fail. The problem with Apple is that they have had a lack of competition and is the reason why the iPhone 3g had only a few new features from the 1st gen. Imagine what Apple will come out with if Android is a competitive product. I'll tell you that it wont be some BS campaign that leads you to believe you are paying half as much when in all reality is a more expensive product. Obviously if Android sucks i'll jump onto ATT and get the iPhone.
ROFL, you seriously think Apple gives a flying fart about this turd looking phone? Hardly. And competition? Ha! They've been getting their azzes handed to them financially by Microsucks for years but that doesn't phase them. If the Android platforms prove to pose an issue for Apple they'll simple do what they've always done....try to design and produce something better. Big deal about nothing.
Anyone know anything on a UK date?
i wish i could get that phone with OSx and a touchscreen interface.! that would be sweet.
Omfg, you ruined it.
I'm sure it would be. You could get one with a MOBILE version of OSX, which is kinda pretty but really worthless...
Also it IS touchscreen
I can't get enough pozzitron. I agree with you completely!
what is going on here?
I would get that phone regardless if it didnt have a touchscreen. But please tell me is syncs flawlessly with iTune.
I wish I bought a phone that limited me to certain application and made me use iTunes for all things not related to music. Apple is the new Microsoft. Hey, this thing can copy and paste ya looser.
If the sprint one pans out well with Sprint Nav, TV, and NFL Mobile that would be sweet. I get a discount, unlimited all data (TV, GPS, MMS, Tethering) with 450 minutes for 60 bucks. Running low on minutes, log into Skype... Beat that ATT, Verizon. T-Mobile has the hotspot, thats a pretty cool feature.
I think copy/pasting on your cell is overrated. c'mon people can i get a show of hands how many copy pasted something on their cells today.!
Man, it'd be so f-ing funny if you gave one of these to a caveman or cave woman. They wouldn't know what to do with it!
pozzitron for pozident of the poznited states of pozmerica!
Yeah and if it did push notifications, multi-tasking, and copy/paste? That would TOTALLY rule.
dude you are pozzitronically the smarest muthagrabber in the room
