4GB iPod nano 4Gs show up on Best Buy's Canadian site
Look, we know there's some kind of good explanation for these things existing, but Apple, don't you think it's a little weird how they keep cropping up in stores even though you never, ever mentioned them? That's right, those 4GB iPod nano 4Gs we saw at Dutch retailers last week have now made their way onto Best Buy's Canadian website. Over in North America, the players will apparently sell for $139, and will be available tomorrow... or so they say.

Great! Can't wait to get one for myself!

Wow, that's the most annoying spam in the world, Good for you, you're FIRST on a blog comment post. IMPRESSIVE.
Moving on... If these guys are in the $100 range USD, I may consider picking one up for my own pleasure, even though I have an iPhone. Just something else apple to carry around. Besides, it's affordable, and I can stick a bit more music on there that I can't fit on my iPhone, and leave it in the car plugged in to my radio so I don't have to move it around.

"Just something else apple to carry around."
what a tool
steven @ Sep 21st 2008 3:37PM
Why don't you do your research and get something better, cheaper? Like a Creative Zen or Meizu M6.
lucassmalls @ Sep 21st 2008 10:06PM
the Nano IV wannabe is like half that price and is 1/2 the price... http://www.gadgetgreats.com/2-0-4th-generation-8gb-mp4-nano---nano-iv.aspx also, i though that the Nano IV was only going to be available in 8gb and 16gb?

I've seen them last week at UNT in my campus bookstore.
Saad Rabia @ Sep 21st 2008 2:58PM
Trust me on this one, you'll see those 4GB versions everywhere, very soon.
To keep it simple: Job's was going to introduce the all new Nano with 4GB and 8GB, but when Microsoft came out with an 8GB and a 16Gb priced at exactly the same prices of the 4 and 8 that Apple offers, Jobs would be crazy if he'd let something like this go on, so at the last moment and right before anyone can feel it, he changed the 4 to an 8 and the 8 to a 16.
What I'm claiming here can be proven by the fact that 16GB versions are still in production process and their shipping dates have been postponed a couple of days later, adding to the fact that the 16GB Nanos are still not available in all colors, yet.
Of course a couple hundred thousands of the 4GB Nanos were produced and Apple wouldn't like to throw them away, so what best they could do about them? Sell them in the outside market, simple. Then when the 16GB Nanos are ready for mass selling in the USA, they get the 4GB ones outside as part of the deal, as if.
So, thanks again to competition, otherwise we would've seen the new Nanos in a 4 and 8 GB, priced with the same old price.
wslcrew @ Sep 21st 2008 11:47PM
@ Saad
I don't know where you get your facts, but I received my 16Gb unit WITH ENGRAVING last Wednesday, about 1 week after Jobs announced. Well, I ordered it on Wednesday, so it took about 5 business days to get here. With shipping and handling considered (shipped from China), it would mean that the unit was well under production before the announcement was made. Putting products into mass production takes time, and I think Apple planned for this for more than a couple of weeks.
Mitch @ Sep 22nd 2008 1:31AM
I'm gonna say I'm with Saad on this one. We are looking for widespread availability Best Buy has the 16gb listed as back ordered for all of them because obviously as Saad has said they probably just began production in the last month. Just admit it, MS one upped Apple and Apple quickly covered it up. Making 4gb devices is stupid just for outside of America consumption and doesn't make sense.
Adrian @ Sep 21st 2008 12:56PM
Notice on the Apple store the Product Red Nano's are exclusive to the Apple Store but Best Buy lists a 4GB Product Red nano... I think this is all to do with Steve not wanting to bested by Microsoft.
CraigJ @ Sep 21st 2008 2:46PM
Many if not Most Best Buys now have an official mini Apple store, so the Product Res is still exclusive to the Apple Store.
jjohnson @ Sep 21st 2008 12:53PM
i can't wait to see them in stores, i just wanna see what they look like in person...prob like a skinny slightly larger screen sansa view minus the layout of the keys and that...ugh...clickwheel...oh and lots of colors which is better than what we're all used to seeing...
seriously though, am i the only one who thinks apple went a step back in the design for this? they could've taken this in so many directions, but i guess if it sells like crazy they got it right again...but still...i dunno...it doesnt make me wanna buy it, my lg muziq w/ its 4GB storage card suffices for every music feature i would want and i can use bluetooth headphones so although i dont want this ipod if i didn't already have a way to get music i would probably have bought not this one but that ipod fatty, kinda liked playing with it in the store...anyways, i hope they refresh the mac mini or do SOMETHING with it, i still want to get one for graphic design and stuff and i already have everything (keyboard, monitor, etc) for it...just waiting on apple...
emptystreets130 @ Sep 21st 2008 1:39PM
It's weird looking.
Pep @ Sep 21st 2008 2:03PM
This should just have been the 3G nano. The "fatty" nano should have never existed. Go from the 2G to this adding video. That's it.
What happens now is that many people see them weird because they are so different than the "fatty". But so did they when the "fatty" came out. Something like this is clearly what the 3G nano should have been.
jjohnson @ Sep 21st 2008 2:14PM
if that were the case, they wouldn't make as much money, right? i wonder what they were thinking and what influenced them to go back to this "tall and skinny" style...why it took so long to make a previously used style (added capabilities aside), and if the next iteration of the ipod nano will look anything like this or be something totally diff...all i know is i want something that will blow all of the other mp3/video/etc players out of the water, and with many cheaper, higher capacity ones in the market, this isn't it to me...
chefgon_ign @ Sep 21st 2008 12:55PM
Only $10 less than the 8gb?
POV @ Sep 21st 2008 1:10PM
I think you're missing the point
El Taco @ Sep 21st 2008 1:16PM
some people know they won't fill up 4gb i guess, so why not get $10 cheaper?
rhcpsfan @ Sep 21st 2008 1:21PM
I think thats in canadian dollars, so its a bit less when you convert it.
Diego @ Sep 21st 2008 1:21PM
Its canadian prices, the 8gb is $169.99 in canadian dollars... but still i would cough up $30 more for double the capacity.
Kspraydad @ Sep 21st 2008 1:21PM
This is a $30 savings in Canada as the 8GB goes for $169
http://store.apple.com/ca/browse/home/shop_ipod/family/ipod_nano
SharpShooter @ Sep 21st 2008 1:23PM
It would be $10, if we actually had to pay the same price as you Americans. The 8GB is $169.99 while the 16GB is $219.99.
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/dept.asp?logon=&langid=EN&catid=19
James @ Sep 21st 2008 1:45PM
It's so that people see the 4GB and want it, but then realize that it's only $10 cheaper than a Nano with twice the storage, so they think 'why not?' and buy it. Apple makes an extra $10.
Grant @ Sep 21st 2008 2:29PM
i'm sure the existance of the 4 gb nanos is simply because Apple had a bunch of 2GB memory chips they needed to clear out.
Frankly, 4GB for something that you can play video on is way too small, and even though people say they don't ever intend to use it for that, there is still some pretty decent free stuff on the itunes music store you can nab, and before you know it you're out of space.
But then again, i'm obviously the minority, because i would never buy an 8GB nano if i could double the capacity for $50 more.
Apples pricing differences don't really seem to be directly influenced by memory cost either, since an 8GB and 16GB touch are priced $70 appart, while the nanos are only $50 apart.
dukemang @ Sep 21st 2008 12:57PM
Will apple ever learn? Why introduce a new product right before Christmas when every man, woman, child, dog, cat and cockroach on Earth knows as sure as the sun will rise that Apple is totally incapable of building enough to meet demand in the short time before Christmas. Just once could they introduce a kick ass product in like May or do their calendars only include Sept through Dec?
Tony @ Sep 21st 2008 1:47PM
I've never had a problem with iPods being out-of-stock anywhere. They are very good at meeting demand. I don't remember the iPhone going out-of-stock either, just having a really long activation process.
letstakeawalk @ Sep 21st 2008 2:54PM
I agree about iPods, but I seem to remember that iPhones went out of stock very quickly...

@ Tony
I would like to disagree. On Thanksgiving 2005 (which is lower on the gift giving scale than Christmas), we had to go to at least 5 stores to find a 30gb iPod Video. And when we got to the 5th (Wal Mart), they only had one white one. And this is in Alabama, so I guess the problem might be better/worse in other places but whatever.

B.F.D!!!
Who cares?
CraigJ @ Sep 21st 2008 2:47PM
Gadget site.
Last I checked the Nano was a gadget. Maybe you are on the wrong site?
kamikaZi @ Sep 21st 2008 1:00PM
Fyi they are already in a few London Drugs stores, I know this because I work there. Only a few colours though, havent seen the full selection as of yet. We also have some new shuffles and just waiting for the redone iTouch models.
caniac_01 @ Sep 21st 2008 1:02PM
wow.. ok, this is not news. I live in New Brunswick, in a small community, and the only walmart for 30 minutes has these new nanos in... so why's it a surprise that they're showing up on a website? didn't apple announce at the Let's rock event they'd be in stores That weekend?... I dont know.. all I know is, my "local" walmart ran out of the old nano fatty's and has already nearly sold out on the new fourth generation ones. maybe you guys at engadget are behind the times?
Kspraydad @ Sep 21st 2008 1:07PM
It is 'news' because it is an unannounced 4GB version.
Go Titan.
Jack Storm @ Sep 22nd 2008 2:07AM

lorddshadow @ Sep 21st 2008 4:59PM
That's what she said. To you.
jawn @ Feb 26th 2009 11:19AM
Yeah you can already buy them at the St. Laurent mall in Ottawa at The Source. They look pretty sweet in person too.
Kspraydad @ Sep 21st 2008 1:13PM
4GB ones?
Sad that the Source is giving away Skull Candy earbuds with purchase of Nano...what does that imply about the quality of Apple's ear phones?
rTwelve [xbl:chilblane] @ Sep 21st 2008 2:46PM
I don't think it was a secret that they are supposed to suck. Huge number of customers come into my store to get better headphones (usually in-ear) because the earbuds (included with almost any mp3 player) hurt or fall out a lot.
grull27 @ Sep 21st 2008 1:13PM
Maybe $10 is a lot to some people?! You ever thought of that? Huh?
:D lol
El Taco @ Sep 21st 2008 1:15PM
sorry, you got beat 55 times
eric f. @ Sep 21st 2008 1:16PM
I think the factory just made a crapload of 4GB versions by mistake. either that or they had a bunch of leftover 4GB memory and figured they might as well get rid of them.
eric f. @ Sep 21st 2008 1:17PM
Also consider it might be brilliant marketing for a lower class device. Look how much people are talking about a 4GB iPod!
