Nokia 5800 Tube press shot leaks into the wilds
One day after Google goes touchscreen, along comes what looks to be an official press shot of Nokia's 5800 XpressMusic -- aka, the Tube. No new details here, though Nokia appears to have cleaned up the industrial design around the buttons of some of those earlier prototypes we've seen. October 2nd looks like the date that we'll finally get our fill of the first S60 Touch handset. Though given the number of leaks and rabid competition Nokia faces in the touchscreen OS space -- our appetite for this device might be quickly satiated.

What's with the wedge at the top-rear of the phone?
Looks odd.
Thi mam(kris120890) @ Sep 24th 2008 9:10AM
Various connections. Headphone jack, Modified (customized) USB connector and something else. Sexy phone but does it come in any colours. Don't get me wrong that red is probably one of the reasons I'd buy the phone but colour options is always nice.
thrillchuckles @ Sep 24th 2008 9:11AM
didn't you see the dark knight?
L @ Sep 24th 2008 9:40AM
That's where the headset jack and the microUSB port is - the devices' sides are a bit sloped apparently, so the had to add either something like this or recess the ports iPhone 2G-style. While it really does look a bit odd, I prefer using my own headset over a slightly nicer design...
Muhammed @ Sep 24th 2008 8:48AM
That is one nice touch music phone!
iEye @ Sep 24th 2008 10:47AM
If you like this then you should check out the iPhone! ®
Titanium man @ Sep 24th 2008 8:52AM
For those that are wondering.
This is how you differentiate your handset's appearance from the iphone.
This is not an iphone clone!
Unlike that pesky lg renoir and countless others...
Deeznuts420 @ Sep 24th 2008 1:46PM
how is the lg a ripoff when their first phone came out before iphone? oh cause u dont have common sense. got it.
bob sakamano @ Sep 24th 2008 8:51AM
looks pretty nice, nokia. is there a keyboard?
Muhammed @ Sep 24th 2008 8:56AM
nope.
Al @ Sep 24th 2008 9:53AM
You could probably add a fullsized bluetooth keyboard like the Apple one I use with my N800.
Imran @ Sep 24th 2008 1:12PM
Or the foldable bluetooth Nokia keyboards or any of the many others that can be paired up with your Nokia.
huh @ Sep 24th 2008 8:55AM
Don't worry, if you don't like this one, Nokia will release the 5801, 5802, and 5805+, all of which will be incrementally different, and none of which will support consistent upgrades. Nokia just wants to make sure its consumers, developers and storefronts have lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of choices, even if they are all basically the same.
Imran @ Sep 24th 2008 1:13PM
And what's wrong with that? Pick and choose your specs :)
Ryan Trevisol @ Sep 24th 2008 2:46PM
Right, because Steve Jobs was levitating in his office on December 15, 2006 and saw the LG Prada's first spy shots on Engadget. He was so disturbed that he fell out of his meditation and crashed to the ground.
When his aides rushed in, they found him on the floor, shakily pointing at the picture of the Prada and whispering, "it will be mine, oh yes, it will be mine."
In the next three weeks, the Apple team worked around the clock designing the iPhone to carefully ape the Prada's shape, design and interface. Except that they laid out the screen with more icons (which had a different design), they dropped the buttons on the front and used one multi-function button instead, and rounded the edges. Oh, and the screen had more pixels. The design satisfied The Steve, and he put his blessing on it.
In those same three weeks, The Steve went back in time for several months to spread rumors about the Apple Phone, to gain hype for his new product - this is actually Standard Operating Procedure at Apple.
Of course, to get the moulds to the Chinese elf factory in time to start production, Cupertino used it's fleet of stealth Unicorns as ferries. Not the first time to be sure.
Ryan Trevisol @ Sep 24th 2008 2:50PM
May the lord strike down this blasted piece of garbage comment system! This is a reply to the moron above, Deeznuts420.
y3k.nik @ Sep 24th 2008 2:51PM
@Ryan..
ummm... WTF?
huh @ Sep 24th 2008 3:49PM
Imran, what's wrong with that is Nokia doesn't want to make the perfect device, customers will never get perfect support, and developers will never be able to perfectly support any of their handsets. Contrast that with, ahem, other providers.
y3k.nik @ Sep 24th 2008 9:03AM
How can a phone used as a spy device in the Dark Knight satiate your appetite quickly? I didn't realize iPhone and G1 had built in spy gear...
Pavan @ Sep 24th 2008 9:17AM
test
Fernando @ Sep 24th 2008 9:18AM
I hope the front buttons are clicky
Freakin Ijit @ Sep 24th 2008 9:21AM
Does this device have a slide-out QWERTY keyboard? Looks sort of like it does.
Neolight @ Sep 24th 2008 9:28AM
I'm sorry, but as sold as I was/am on iPhone, and as blown away as I am by the G1, it just seems like unless you reinvent the hardware or the interface that no one is gonna care anymore..... I think we'll see the market able to support a lot fewer phone models in the future; 90% of the way to unbelievably cool just ain't gonna cut it....
Nikhil S @ Sep 24th 2008 12:24PM
actually, apple copied HTC with their touch screen phones that had been around for years before the iphone...copycat what?
google: Operation Northwoods @ Sep 24th 2008 9:35AM
Come onnnn! Everybody is copying the iPhone now in days! and don't tell me no. Incredible, companies with years of experience try to copy a new in cell phone and doesn't even come close. How did Apple manage to do that? So far, from what I see, only Nvidia offers a decent competition with their new chip design. hopefully they don't screw it up withe software.
Mr. Ford @ Sep 24th 2008 11:00AM
It doesn't look anything like the iPhone, idiot! Unless you mean it looks the same because it's red, has a screen, and says Nokia on it.
nikhil s @ Sep 24th 2008 12:24PM
read myc omment above, replied to the wrong comment
chickenator @ Sep 24th 2008 1:59PM
yup. this nokia is a KIRF!!!
google: Operation Northwoods @ Oct 3rd 2008 9:13AM
MR. FORD: you just called your self an idiot: "the Finns definitely borrowed some design cues from Apple's iPhone, but it seems that Nokia has hit all the right notes with the 5800." http://blogs.pcworld.com/staffblog/archives/007853.html
Tor Slettnes @ Oct 9th 2008 2:21PM
I think you will find that those "cues" are actually copied INTO the iPhone from the likes of the Motorola A1200 MING, the Viewty, etc. Apple did things a little cleaner (in their typical spartan way); so in one sense the 5800 looks more like the Ming, the ViewTy etc than the iPhone (which, frankly, is very little besides a fashion accessory in terms of capabilties..)
Paradox @ Sep 24th 2008 9:46AM
isnt the new nokia touch phone suposed to be the same one used in the Batman movie?
L @ Sep 24th 2008 9:53AM
Doesn't this look pretty similar to the one used in the Dark Knight? I'd say so...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otZNOoj0SVM
nikhil s @ Sep 24th 2008 12:24PM
yes it is - nice marketing nokia!
zephxiii @ Sep 24th 2008 9:56AM
So just because it is a touchscreen device, means it is copying the iphone? I think not.
Pdexter @ Sep 24th 2008 10:07AM
To google:operation Iphone indeed did brought the TS back. There was some competition in 2003 when Nokia example had 7710 already back in 2003, but iphone no doubt brought competition back especially in Europe and Asia where WM(or WM devices at all) TS devices dont exist. Competition is always good for us consumers and Nokia have had it easy in receant years as Nokia has bean beating Moto down and any of the big guys after Moto haven't had it to take Nokia down(Samsung is doing nice currently thought).
Can't wait!!!!11
Considering that it got the features i need and big screen with 640 × 360 reso(compared to iphones 480x320 for example) and 3.2mpx camera.
Thought i might hold for the next years TS devices that are rumoured to be the real thing. As normal Nokia will start flooding market with different TS devices. 5800 starting from mid with cheap price and going to for high end in February next year.
avester @ Sep 24th 2008 10:18AM
Ahh, the 7710!
It was pretty damn good phone for being born in 2004, 640x320 and under 200g, very nice device indeed.
Also one of the first DVB-H phones was 7710 with additional tuner.
Very solid looking phone, too bad that they never carried on the design/software, I blame the S90 base that was only used by that phone, whereas S60 is very popular.
Pdexter @ Sep 24th 2008 10:30AM
It's a shame that Nokia or Symbian didn't keep S90 alive back then, but i guess not even Nokia can keep every base on their own even as that's what they have been doing couple of years now(with 40% market share that's kind of the only thing you can still do).
matt @ Sep 24th 2008 12:21PM
Yeah, There are no WM devices in Europe. None. The XDA and the various Tmobile devices never took off did they?
Tool.
Shravan @ Sep 24th 2008 1:05PM
No WM devices in Asia ? Do you even know where Asia is ? I would not expect some one spelling "been" as "bean" to know that anyway. Get your facts before you post anything.
ILoveApple @ Sep 24th 2008 3:17PM
Walk through the streets of London for a whole day and you won't see more than 5 WinMo devices, guaranteed. On the other hand, you'll certainly see 100+ N95s on that one day.
I'm serious.
Pdexter @ Sep 24th 2008 3:15PM
Well considering that WM got 14% of smartphone market and by far largest part of it is from NA... what's left for Asian and European market. I really need to look hard to find one WM device in Germany at least.
avester @ Sep 24th 2008 4:11PM
At least here in Finland, Symbian (=Nokia) has a huge share of the market, WM devices are really rare, mostly in some businesses.
ez @ Sep 24th 2008 10:41AM
i wonder what the price point and everything else about this phone is.
i don't think it will replace my N85.
Pok @ Sep 24th 2008 10:48AM
No solid info yet of course, but it's middle priced like Nokia has it's self said for their first device. Nokia is going for higher end phones at the start of next year.
Aye you are right N85 is real good value of money, but i'm probally going to get 5800XM next to my N82.
bozonpjs @ Sep 24th 2008 10:43AM
this thing better be the shizznit, is all i'm saying.
azz0r @ Sep 24th 2008 11:00AM
So this is nokias big new touch screen phone?
Thats really dissapointing, the screens not big enough and its too thick.
Le sigh :(
Anthony @ Sep 24th 2008 11:21AM
That photo's actual size. It's HUGE.
Truthfully- not everyone wants slivers. I prefer the Nokia width & if they can bring high quality optics, great reception & usable S60 I'm may have to break a bet w/ my wife (not to buy another phone until August 09- after having 10 this past year).
bachviet @ Sep 24th 2008 11:11AM
If the price is right and come with AWS (please Nokia), I'll buy one instead of the G1.
avester @ Sep 24th 2008 12:24PM
http://www.suomityres.fi/aws.html
Nokia AWS?
Ron @ Sep 24th 2008 12:41PM
I'm not big on S60 or even Nokia for that matter. But they are at the top for a reason. I'm sure the 5800 will be a great device.
