OpenPeak gets official with Atom-based OpenFrame IP "media phone"

OpenPeak was showing off an Atom-based version of its OpenFrame touchscreen / phone combo at IDF last month, but it's only just now gotten fully official with it and, naturally, it's taken the opportunity to dish out some new, prettied-up pictures. Not much looks to have changed with the device itself in the past month or so though, with it still promising to "simplify everyday family and media interactions" and, just as importantly for OpenFrame, "drive new revenues for service providers" -- it'll handle phone calls, too. Unfortunately, while OpenFrame is still saying we can expect to see the first devices based on the platform early next year, it's apparently not yet ready (or able) to announce exactly who those OEM partners might be.

You don't have to be a psychic to see the glaring resemblances between these devices, their GUI's and the iphone.
Even if LG Prada came first, the Prada in no way competes with the iPhone. The truth is NO OTHER PHONE EVEN COMES CLOSE...and the only ones that do, are huge, bulky, crappy looking devices.
Sure I'll get Low Ranked, SO WHAT.
Someone needs to tell the truth here cause this blog has been hijacked by anti-apple histeria. And I'm not a fanboy of Apple (I perfer HP) I just hate seeing stupid people say stupid things.

It looks NOTHING like iPhone. But it IS highly reminiscent of AT&T HomeManager (hardware by Samsung)

It's about time, because my VTech 5471 is ready for its second set of replacement batteries and isn't featured in any of the cool TV shows anymore :-(.

looks like a neat toy. Will this work with VoIP, or just landlines.

awesome! latest greatest Intel(TM) Inside Atom(TM) Processor.... does it make my phone calls run faster?
kojo87 @ Sep 24th 2008 5:14PM
everyone gets a chubby when someone says Atom. you could tape an Atom processor to a spork, charge a $100 for it and Engadget would still write a post about it.

Everybody loves touchscreens nowadays, whats next a touch screen toaster with skype
Bob @ Sep 24th 2008 4:44PM
How about drop the phone idea and make it a dedicated bedside clock/information center? Like the chumby but with a readable screen. I'd buy one immediately!

Go ahead and '-' me down if you want. After sifting through their site info, it looks like they are aiming in that direction. It look promising...

I just want an affordable auto-attendant system that will screen out all the pre-recorded telemarketing calls. Looks like this platform may allow someone to develop such an application. Also, looks expensive.

I think these kinds of devices could be the next big thing. The next iteration of a universal remote. I'd purchase a well implemented combination Phone / Web Browser/ Remote Control / Picture Album touchscreen device in a heartbeat. I think the mobile well is beginning to run dry- time to focus back on improving home electronics. I imagine software that will allow me to a) pause my music or TV when the phone rings b) see sports stats or other pop-up information that automatically adjusts to whatever channel I'm watching c) stream video from my television if I want to bring the game into the kitchen, bathroom, garage, backyard. They have all of these types of products built into cellphones and laptops- why not build it into a 8-9" home-based tablet?

if a universal remote manufacturer made a touch screen remote about the size of this thing's home base, got a deal with companies like imdb, netflix, tv.com, tvguide... and they all had sites optimized for this thing... (not to mention full internet capability) i'd buy one right away. it also leads to livestreams to such devices such as interactive information during tv shows (like pop up video sort of stuff or things like that, directors commentary...) this thing would be in every home.

Add a GPS device in there and you have a system you would take everywhere.
You'd have enough space to show people your digital photos because nobody prints them anymore
and you'd have space to show movies/videos. Which may address some problems people have with showing other people your movies that you leaglly bought
You'd also have wifi to email those pics you never print
How's the battery life?
