Limited edition red 'Resident Evil Code: Veronica' Dreamcast pops up on eBay
Console collectors know good and well that Sega dished out a few less-than-easily-attainable versions of the Dreamcast back in the day, but only the hardest of hardcore fanatics are apt to have one this bad boy. Just 1,800 of these limited edition bundles were made, which feature an atypical Code: Veronica box, a translucent red version of the Japanese console, a matching controller, a copy of Biohazard Code: Veronica (Japan's version of Resident Evil Code: Veronica), all the traditional connection cables and a huge dose of bragging rights. Number 280 out of the 1,800 units can be yours right now for the low, low asking price of $800, and believe us, we don't foresee this one hanging around sans an owner for too much longer.

DO WANT!
SEGA deserved to go under.
I wonder who will be next. Sony, and Microsoft seem to be on equal footing. Nintendo has been around a while and will probably be around a while longer.
WANT!
Nah, I still got a DC hooked up to my PC Monitor, but this is an awesome collectors item for sure.
If I had money to burn, I would consider it.
Nice! Dreamcast ftw
something for a gag
I was driving through a neighbourhood hosting a street sale. a used dreamcast for 10 bucks, w/ a few games. LOL
I have a SegaSports BLACK Dreamcast.. with controller! asking price HALF of that.. 399.99! with matching controllers too.
How about $79 shipped?...
i was just kidding! geez ppl.. but yes i do have a blk dc..
aahhh the days of easy-as-hell console piracy... almost forgot about the dreamcast.
"remember alf? remember pogs?... well now alf's back... in pog form!"
If only their controllers didn't slice into people's fingers... what could have been.
excuse me but WTF are you doing? dreamcast controllers = best controller of all time.
You're doing it wrong.
Doing what wrong? Living in the past? No, I'm not doing that. I'm here in 2008.
@hork
No the best controller of all time is clearly the sega saturn's
the d-pad was one of a kind
I think he was talking about how you apparently modded your dreamcast with a razor blade, then proceeded to cut your fingers with it.
I think.
Just so that you guys know how much I love the dreamcast...

Who else gets good memories from that?
(PRODUCT) RED is here !!!
That's actually a tad steep - the red version is not impossible to find. Bought one in Akihabara in late 2005, straight off the shelf; it was 29,000 JPY, translating to ca. 250 dollars. The blue Biohazard CV collector version, of which only 200 were produced, was 92,000 JPY, which is a lot closer to the price on this baby - and would have effectively killed the travel budget :)
Got in on my "code red" for $275 ... originally the guy wanted to $350 but I told him it was for the girl checking out the rest of his stuff ... fastest price drop I ever haggled in my life.
Said girl later wanted to beat me after she found out how much I spent ...
Well maybe if you had been smart and actually bought HER something, she would have been doing something else to you and not a potential beating! ;)
My DC is still at my parents' house, on the other side of the country. I'll have to leave a little room in my suitcase next time I visit.
Same exact situation here. I'm going to have them ship it out because I miss NBA2k1 and Quake 3: Arena with the DC keyboard and mouse.
mine is still in my entertainment center.
Ok our country is in financial crisis as is the world around us and people want an 800$ game system just because it is limited and red color? Good luck explaining that to your wifes, girlfriends or family. Now if the thing will increase in value and you can make a profit (highly doubt it! ) then it would be a good buy.
Not all of us are broke as @#*! with other people riding us over our finances.
And that's another thing I don't understand about some people, why is the only possible reason you'd -ever- buy something what you think you could sell it for. I brought a limited edition PS2 back from Japan with me and the only thing my father thought was how much I could sell it for.

I do have to agree with Microlith, not everyone is up Shyte Creek financially. You don't have to believe everything the media says...
On that note...my wife would kill me if I were to spend $800 on a 9 year old console. Granted I loved it when I had one, but I can think of far better things to spend $800 say a massage chair? That seems more frugal...
while i have no intentions of actually considering bidding on this, i find it the height of pretension (and the mother of all sweeping generalisations) that you think everyone who reads Engadget is from the US! Last I checked, my homeland, the Cayman Islands wasn't going through any such financial crisis; suffice it to say that several other nations are doing okay too!
That being said, with everyone in the States clutching for their wallets and purses, wouldn't it only make sense to you that this is another outlet for someone to make a buck?
Those crazy Japanese and their innovation!
Slow news day?
Not really, unless 22 news just today (and today is not even done yet). I wouldn't call it slow news day.
Would seem like it. These things are for sale quite often, and no where near impossible to find.
hmmm..... and it's about time to replace my Dreamcast too..... durn kids wore it out on DreamSNES.
If I wasn't in college and had extra money to spend I would have so much of this type of collector's stuff.
Back Off! It's Mine!
L'eggo my Eggo!!!
Interesting. I've got one of the limited X-mas Seaman DC's. Of 850, mine's #000. (So I guess maybe 851.) I've always wondered whether there's any demand for these things. Unfortunately, the X-mas Seaman DC is butt-ugly, and the Resident Evil one is incredibly awesome. So that probably tilts things in favor of the RE one. Ha!

Either it's worth a lot, or you don't have the only #000 out there.
I loved the DC... *sniff*
Mine sits in the closet next to the countless CD-R discs that have SNES, NES, etc Emulators..
I Probably take it out a couple times a year to play F355 Challenge, Jet Grind Radio, etc..
Man, I wish.
Ewww.. Seaman on your Dreamcast.
RIP, Dreamcast. We shall not forget ye.
He is the true definition of orphan, as we all abandoned him long before his 10th birthday..
Should somebody tell Ryan that there's a "Veronica box" on here?
I love(d) Dreamcast so much. I remember the first time turning it on was magical (up to that point I was used to the static boot up screens of the Genesis, SNES, and N64) and Sonic Adventure's opening movie just rolling - I was in love. I still play with it occasionally, except it won't play games if the lid is closed.....I have to tape it shut enough so that the disc drive spins but not so much so that it latches down.
OLL - the things I do for nastalgia
VERY Nice!! Great System and Great Game.
i kept my dc at my friends place in college...and she took it back to hong kong with her after we graduated. =( bah! ill always have chu chu rocket in my memories at least...
i was going to make some a$$hole comment about d/l the game for the wii, but this is too cool for sarcasm.
i never owned one in any colour, but was oh-so-jealous of my friends who did.
Were these manufactured after October 2000? It'd be a shame to not be able to play back ups on this machine...
Personally I bought 8 units when they were $69 at Futureshop, all Utopia boot disc certified.
consider there are only 1800 of them, 800USD isn't THAT bad but still alot of money for an old but popular system

I need to replace mine, so this should make for a suitable replacement! I love the DC, still have mine hooked up to the new HDTV for the occaisional MvC2 session. I've noticed it acting strange, so I'll have to find another one soon!
I wuv you DC!
What are you using to hook it up and how does it look on HDTV?
My TV has a VGA connection, so I'm using a VGA adapter from the DC. The adapter also has a 1/8" headphone jack to run the audio to the television, all in one. There's also a VGA box floating around in case you're looking to get one. I don't know of any other connections available apart from S-Video and Composite, so the VGA was the best bet for video quality on the TV.
