Sprint XOHM WiMAX networks reportedly active in other cities
Flying out of BWI to Chicago, Boston, Dallas, Philadelphia, Washington D.C. or Northern Virginia? Make sure you pack in that SWC-E100, because we're hearing that Sprint's XOHM WiMAX networks are already live in each of those locales. According to a XOHM representative at a booth in Baltimore, the networks in each of those cities are already up, though they aren't officially supported as they're still "being tested." If any of you XOHM early adopters happen to head to any of the previously mentioned regions, bust out your ExpressCard and see if you get lucky (and then let us know how it goes).

Wow!! "Hopspot the size of a city" !! I want to live in that city !! :)
zenstylejunglist @ Oct 6th 2008 10:24AM
You mean you want to live in a city the size of a hotspot, right?
Jash Sayani @ Oct 6th 2008 10:28AM
Nope. I mean I want to live in a city with a hotspot as large as the city!
The Kludge @ Oct 6th 2008 11:39AM
Move to Phoenix.
Dubb @ Oct 6th 2008 1:31PM
@The Kludge
What currently exists in Phoenix that resembles XOHM? To my knowledge it hasn't launched here yet. And I don't know of anything similar. Maybe Sprint's old wireless data tech? I think it was called direct connect or something like that.
Dubb @ Oct 6th 2008 1:36PM
Man wish I could edit posts, I got the joke now The Kludge. :(

Will Sprint sell to billing zip codes outside of Baltimore? I live in DC and I would like to buy now, see if the "test" network is available in the city. If not, I'll just be waiting until they officially go live.
Danny @ Oct 6th 2008 10:11AM
hope they come to FL :O
Jack @ Oct 6th 2008 10:18AM
i wish we had more of those in the UK

XOHMG!
Joe @ Oct 6th 2008 10:20AM
This has been known since it came out. Over at 4ginfo.com, they got it working in Chicago. Just register the device with a Baltimore address and then change the address later in my.xohm.com. It works, but don't expect customer support and beware that since the network isn't officially released yet, they are bringing sites up and down.

XOHM is live around the Dulles Technology Corridor outside of Washington DC!
Todd @ Oct 6th 2008 10:33AM
According to the gauges on my tinfoil hat, yes, WiMax is up and running here in Dallas:

dark star @ Oct 6th 2008 10:46AM
faster porn!!!
yes, its faster than evdo and its working in Philly! YAY
Xeno @ Oct 6th 2008 11:06AM
WiMAX is IEEE like WiFi, meaning that all kinds of consumer electronics products will come with WiMAX built in. Can't easily do that with 3G since it's controlled by the telcom industry.
It will be a couple years before the benefits really begin to show but WiMAX is better overall for consumers. 3G and LTE are too limiting.

Has anyone heard back regarding the upcoming quality test in Baltimore? They said they would be calling on participants early this week but that they only need a small group out of hundreds of applicants.

The fact that the Xhom system is available in several markets is not surprising. Wimax currently has no built in method for roaming authentication, such as the SIM card in your GSM phone. Since the individual subscriber units have only mac addresses, and possibly an ssl certificate as the unique identifier, it would be expected behavior that a subscriber unit valid in one city would work in another, as the only way for Xhom (or any other WiMax provider) implement roaming between cities would be for every city to be tied to a common authentication system.
Matt @ Oct 6th 2008 6:46PM
There are no plans for roaming. You pay for Xohm, you get Xohm... everywhere. No added costs. No worries. That's it.
Xeno @ Oct 6th 2008 3:03PM
When you buy a WiMAX device, it's not tied to a carrier. It doesn't work like telcom networks but more like WiFi. Sprint is not the only one deploying mobile WiMAX. There are many small towns active with mobile WiMAX and there will be many more players in the US. The devices themselves support 3 spectrum, not just the Sprint spectrum. While Xohm may develop roaming relationships in terms of sharing accounts, the device itself will work on any 802.16e mobile WiMAX service independent of the account.

Why would i fly out of BWI to Washington D.C.?
Charlie @ Oct 7th 2008 8:44AM
Ever been on the beltway at rush hour?
j/k
compuguy1088 @ Oct 8th 2008 6:03PM
Agreed....though in terms of airports Dulles is better if your in Northern Virginia.
T.H. @ Oct 6th 2008 2:36PM
Excellent news. I travel between my old house, my new house and my work place. Each has internet but sometimes I just wanna sit outside or at the park. This type of service will mean I can travel around, log into work and still get something done. I live in Philly so I hope it's up soon.
Platinum_Skeet @ Oct 6th 2008 3:53PM
This with a Wi-Fi enabled phone that lets you get your minutes free as long as your connected to a Wi-Fi network will kill all....
Matt @ Oct 6th 2008 6:50PM
This is going to be HUGE.
Andreas @ Oct 6th 2008 7:54PM
Awesome shot of fells point fun fest in Baltimore. I saw this stand. Glad to see some tech shift towards the east coast.
Geoffrey @ Oct 6th 2008 10:38PM
@Xeno The USB Wimax adapter announced by Motorola a couple weeks ago actually comes in three versions for the three different bands. I hope the Sprint devices on offer right now do handle all three bands.
I also hope that if I stop at the boot in Ann Arundel, they'll sell me the service with a Philadelphia address.
xohm1 @ Nov 17th 2008 12:57PM
Towson Town Mall now has a XOHM kiosk on the 3rd flr... Get it..
