I made a couple of sarcastic remarks, yeah. But it is true that this competition was started so that the US military could find a suitable power source for the exoskeleton suit that is in development. As a matter of fact, in order to get further in their development, they needed to eb able to un-tether the existing device. There are videos of it in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJ4J69EEpu4

I first read about the system in Popular Science. It was one of last years top 20 developments according to Popular Science. According to the Pop. Sci. article the suit was getting near the end of the testing they could perform on a tether. The military's solution was to start this million dollar contest. It has been a while since I read the article, but I seem to recall that the tech they were eyeing for the power solution at that time was a hydrogen fuel-cell from a European manufacturer. That fuel-cell was still undergoing development and testing though.

http://www.popsci.com/scitech/article/2008-04/video-xos-exoskeleton-action

kali4

Comments on M-25 portable fuel cell takes home $1 million Pentagon prize

Dupont was a shoe-in.
