World's largest LED screen coming to Dubai
By this point, you should fully understand that "Dubai" and "world's largest" go hand-in-hand, so it's quite fitting that said city is receiving the planet's most humongous LED screen. Designed by UAE development company Tameer Holding, the 33-story high display will reportedly be "embedded on an intended commercial tower in the Majan district of Dubailand," where it will stand tall and blast out advertisements to onlookers some 1.5-kilometers away. Dubbed Podium, the building will also house 33 levels of "premium commercial office space, two floors dedicated to retail and four floors for parking." There's no word on when the project will be completed, but we don't suspect Tameer will be dragging its feet in getting this up.

In the 90's a majority of Nobel prize-winning Scientists in the chemistry/geo field agreed that at our consumption rate the earth would run out of the resources needed to sustain us before 2070.
And yet, humans are still doing.... this.

My thoughts exactly.
Unfortunately most Engaget readers only care about what the resolution is, how much it will cost to advertise on, how many LEDs are there, can Crysis be output to it or 'will it blend (one LED at a time).
The most important fact is how much power will it use (read waste). All so that some corporation can try to sell us more crap such as tobacco, cosmetics or some gas-guzzling SUV at the expense of costing us this planet.
ChrisTheFeral @ Oct 8th 2008 8:07PM
@GoVegan
You didn't think I was serious when I asked how much it costs to advertise, did you? o.O
happy_penguin @ Oct 8th 2008 9:24PM
Thank God I won't be here in 2070
GoVegan @ Oct 8th 2008 10:08PM
@ChrisTheFeral.
No, but my point is that this type of question first comes to mind for most people even if said in jest.

@GoVegan
Oh ok, I getcha now :P
Just so you know, generally speaking, LED's are very power efficient.
I also do understand where you are coming from too.
I wonder if it is solar powered?
Jherez @ Oct 8th 2008 10:47PM
$700 Billion

People like to talk about cutting costs when other countries are doing something like this. When USA goes into pomp and show, everybody cheers. But when other countries do it, there is talk about consumption, waste, global warming effects, etc.
I remember when Engadget reported about India's TataNano car, there were discussions about pollution and it contributing to global warming, etc, even though it was a 50 mpg car! For a country with less than 5% of the population and using more than 45% of the world's resources (including coal, oil, electricity, minerals), you''re one to talk!!
Was the Eiffel tower a waste when it was built? What about wasting electricity when a lot of American businesses and offices leave their lights and computers on even at night after everybody is gone? I work in Manhattan and almost my whole building remains lit even at night when no one is there!

Thats what most people think. You won't be there when humans run out of resources ect. But your kids will. And the kids of your kids will. You really hate your kids so much that want them to suffer?
Kei @ Oct 9th 2008 2:55AM
This article is wrong, The world's largest is in Doha's Westbay being built. It's DOUBLE the size of this one!

YOU ARE WRONG!, one thing is the largest LED screen and another is the largest PROJECTION surface, whatever.
Learn to read my friend.

HADI @ Oct 9th 2008 4:49AM
Kei...
Get your facts straight....If your dumb enough to know the difference between a projection screen or an LED lit screen then dont be reading Engadget!!!!
For you other people that didn't understand..Dubai is going for largest LED screen, while Doha has (or will have biggest Projection on a building)....
PS stop getting Jealous over Dubai...Every time Us Arabs do something that you haven't done before then you act as if its a Taboo and because of us the world will come to an end...
lowdef @ Oct 8th 2008 6:53PM

Muhammad-Oli @ Oct 8th 2008 8:07PM
I dunno, but good luck making an advertisement to go on it which doesn't look pixelated. And good luck finding a computer powerful enough to make that ad...
Taz @ Oct 8th 2008 7:00PM
I wanna play Galaxian on that thing :D

Surprise, surprise. With a barrel of oil at around $90, I expected a bigger monitor.
Mitch @ Oct 9th 2008 5:17AM
6% of UAEs GDP is Oil. Every Dubai story everywhere has some asshat comment as you, the thing is oil is very little to their country.
JohnTitor @ Oct 8th 2008 7:10PM
How do they keep announcing new stuff when half the city isn't done it, no I'm not kidding go look at some aerial maps or something
Tony @ Oct 8th 2008 7:57PM
Just think how much harder it'll be once the city is "done."
Andi Baritchi @ Oct 8th 2008 7:12PM
Can I get some EMI to go?
BigD145 @ Oct 8th 2008 7:13PM
I'm glad I'm not in Dubai. The advertising alone would make me want to move away.
TareX @ Oct 8th 2008 7:14PM
Hacking into this screen would be... the ultimate screen hack.
Jash Sayani @ Oct 9th 2008 3:19AM
Seriously. Free Advertising on the World's largest OLED screen!! Your company can get extremely famous!!!!
Squid7085 @ Oct 8th 2008 7:39PM
The screen says "Good Morning Dubai" because the thing would be so damn bright 3 AM would look like morning.
bendizzle @ Oct 8th 2008 7:20PM
I think I see a dead pixel.
parthiv.parikh @ Oct 8th 2008 7:22PM
there goes all the concern about saving energy down the drain.
Jim @ Oct 9th 2008 2:36AM
The more energy wasted, the more they earn.
Ebel3003 @ Oct 8th 2008 7:29PM
Looking for dead or stuck pixels on that thing is going to suck. I wonder how many pixels have to die before they can exchange it with the manufacturer.
iEye @ Oct 8th 2008 8:09PM
Ah, yes the 'ol minimum defective pixel exchange policy...
But when you are dealing with Apple, one dead pixel is enough to warrant an exchange... because Apple cares, another reason why you should choose iPhone as your mobile device...
And don't forget, Apple makes laptops too!
Cory @ Oct 9th 2008 12:48AM
Uh, no don't.

@iEye
I don't know whats more "amazing". The fact that you just turned an article about a building with the largest LCD screen into it being about Apple and its iPhone. Or the fact that your fanboyism just clouds your ability to see the facts! (thanks cory for the link)
Link2877 @ Oct 8th 2008 7:54PM
Wow more and more everyday the world is looking like all those sci-fi movies we've all seen. Bet you in 15 or 20 years cites are going to start looking like how they are in blade runner, (or the relatively new Babylon AD, perfect example of new york)
Rick @ Oct 8th 2008 7:30PM
I thought the Viva Vision Freemont Street Experience in LV was bigger. It has 12.5 million LEDs and is 1500 feet long. The "Thing" in Dubai is only 33 stories which is about 350 feet.
acme @ Oct 8th 2008 7:31PM
the reason Dubai is doing all this crap is so when the day we finally run out of oil, Dubai will have become the tourist mega capitol and the funds will keep coming in
S @ Oct 10th 2008 6:47PM
But is anyone really going to want to visit a place when it has martial law for most people, but the oil barron kings use it like a playground with no rules?! They even have special license plates for the arab royalty, and they cannot be pulled over.
The colossal and beautiful construction, and supposedly beautiful beaches make me want to visit to site see, but the government makes me scared to do so.
