Windows Mobile ported to iPhone, we think
Most of the Windows Mobile / iPhone cross-breeding we've seen has either involved elaborate WinMo skinning or terrible iPhone KIRFs, but we suppose it was just a matter of time before Microsoft's mobile OS was made to run on Apple's hardware -- or at least that's what it looks like here. Pretty much everything about this video is suspect, from the shadiness of the MyPhone2008 conference it was shot at to the interviewer's ridiculously inane questions ("You don't have girlfriends in Norway?"), but damn if that isn't WinMo happily booting on what appears to be an iPhone 3G -- we can't tell, but it's a good bet it's jailbroken. The developer, Erik Kristiansen, says that mod is in beta right now but that he's looking at a January release -- we'll see what more we can dig up before then. Video after the break.
Update: As several commenters have pointed out, this has the trappings of a bad viral for the crappy SonicEmotion app also on that page -- all of the other videos are suspiciously fake / ridiculous, and the phone responds oddly to several touches. So much for that, we suppose.

Cool trick! Do Android next!
rock99rock @ Oct 13th 2008 10:35AM
This is awesome. Dont know how the OS will react to the non-standard resolution, but this gives me a reason to hope.
Kamokazi @ Oct 13th 2008 10:51AM
@rock99
It should be ok. Lots of strange resoutions have popped up lately...Xperia, Touch HD, Treo's, etc.
Andrew @ Oct 13th 2008 11:52AM
It is indeed viral.

@Kamokazi
I though that too, but the Xperia and Touch HD run 800x480, long supported by WinCE/WinMo 6.0, along with the Palms at 320x320. Those resolutions are supported. No WinMo device has ever run at 320x480 to my knowledge, not saying it isnt possible, just interesting.

Sweet, at least the iphone will now have an excuse for being a piece of shit... I'm selling my 3G as soon as the Storm arrives...
zldaphreek @ Oct 13th 2008 10:07AM
how is that useful? the iPhone's UI is WAY more intuitive and user-friendly than windows mobile!
TareX @ Oct 13th 2008 10:11AM
Maybe someone wants... copy/paste... Opera Mobile 9.5 with flash.... a PDA-style OS....
Connor Lugenbeel @ Oct 13th 2008 10:43AM
some people might not think the same as you.
some people may like winMo more than the iPhone OS. It's their decision.
Eric @ Oct 13th 2008 10:20AM
Not to mention, the ability to run other apps like mail replacements, PIMs, etc. Additionally, I find it amusing when the apps crash more often on my iPod Touch, then they ever have on my Nokia phone, running Symbian S60 or old Dell Axim X5, with WinMob 2k3.
As far as porting it, the iPhone/Touch is using an ARM processor too, just like all the recent Win Mob devices.
fred @ Oct 13th 2008 10:46AM
And the ability to run Skyfire.....if you are lucky enough to get it running.
jbs @ Oct 13th 2008 10:57AM
way more?
it doesn't even do 'copy and paste' without buying a 9.99 application
jason @ Oct 13th 2008 10:07AM
doesn't...make...any...sense.
panamnyc @ Oct 13th 2008 11:01AM
and how about porting the apple OS to WinMo phones?
jason @ Oct 13th 2008 10:08AM
why why why why why??????????
wayne @ Oct 13th 2008 10:22AM
Because he can.
Seriously, in this day and age why are people still asking why?
Randy @ Oct 13th 2008 10:51AM
Why not?
Testies, Testies, 1, 2... 3? @ Oct 13th 2008 3:26PM
Because this is the only other way to Copy/Paste on the iPhone

Christopher Wilson @ Oct 13th 2008 10:08AM
The whole reason I bought the iphone was because windows mobile was horrible. Why would you want this :S
fred @ Oct 13th 2008 10:51AM
And your desire not to use WinMobile should factor into this how?
Christopher Wilson @ Oct 13th 2008 10:55AM
I stated my take on it and asked a question, as I cant understand why someone would want this. You however turned around and assumed I thought it was all about me. If you want windows mobile then you should be buying an htc touch, not an iphone.
Zelatio @ Oct 13th 2008 11:25AM
Wait you make no sense. You said 'you' stated your take on it and then you get upset because he assumed it was your opinion? Wow, that's all I have to say.
who? @ Oct 13th 2008 1:32PM
"Wow, that's all I have to say."
Good. Please stop talking.
Jack Storm @ Oct 13th 2008 11:51PM
@ Christopher Wilson
You sir, fail in so many ways.
There's sometimes more than pure UI, sometimes people actually like to do useful stuff with PDAs and phones.
sk @ Oct 13th 2008 10:14AM
Not that this whole porting story is true or anything but I'm curious, doesn't windows mobile have an issue with supporting 16 million color displays ? If it does not, the Touch HD would be better off sporting a 16 million color display.

http://www.devbuzz.com/Windows-Mobile-Screen-Size.aspx
Don't think it does ;) but at 320x240 having a 16bit over 32bit panel won't make that big of a difference ;)
SneAKz @ Oct 13th 2008 10:09AM
Reporter: You don't have girlfriends in Norway?
Erik K.: Yes of course, but I program too.
Lawl
Neil @ Oct 13th 2008 10:14AM
"but they program too, so..."
DssTrainer @ Oct 13th 2008 10:16AM
I'm pretty sure he said "yes of course but THEY program too"
I'm also pretty sure the interviewer girl ends up sleeping with this kid. No girls ask about girlfriends unless they are interested.
liin @ Oct 13th 2008 2:31PM
I guess that means no Android on iPhone. Curse the sexy horny reporter!
IanJ @ Oct 13th 2008 10:09AM
Take the most expensive piece of hardware and add the worst OS. It's the stuff of nightmares. I assume they've done this 'because they can' and not for the benefit of gadget-kind
Nick8708 @ Oct 13th 2008 10:34AM
Yeah...because you wouldn't want it, so therefore nobody else would...
Gregg @ Oct 13th 2008 10:10AM
look at the other videos. Metal Detector???!!! Caloric Counter??!!! Come on SPOOF!!
phoreohPhore @ Oct 13th 2008 10:11AM
Long winters with Norwegian nerds. Sounds like paradise.
Brian @ Oct 13th 2008 10:11AM
I suspect a well timed video...
Neil @ Oct 13th 2008 10:16AM
While being interviewed? Sounds like a stretch man.
nedy78 @ Oct 13th 2008 10:55AM
Agreed with the well timed video comment. This is not very difficult. As much as I'd like to believe this was true, I call shenanigans. This one is much more convincing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1_3275FrfU
The only smudge marks you see on the screen is from his initial touch (hitting play for the movie/magic to start). I mean, come on people, he touches the home button and the calendar launches.

I think somewhere, some one mind just got blown.....
cello @ Oct 13th 2008 10:12AM
Ahhh my eyes! The whole reason the iPhone is better than all the other touchscreen mockups is the software! Still, I can imagine a few people would be psyched...
0mega @ Oct 13th 2008 10:30AM
Guess what? You are treating opinion as fact. Stop that you raging fan boy.
I disagree. I dislike the iPhone's operating system, however very much love the hardware (It's QUITE powerful. ) WinMo on an iPhone make a lot of sense. Just give it MultiTouch TouchFLO and we're set.
loosely_coupled @ Oct 14th 2008 6:02AM
To the idiot above this comment... You honestly would like to run the complete disaster that is Windows mobile on the iPhone?? That should be illegal...
DssTrainer @ Oct 13th 2008 10:13AM
Wow, I've never used an iPhone for more than 2 minutes, but as an unfortunately user of WinMo for the past 7months, I can see this is a huge step BACKWARDS!
Neil @ Oct 13th 2008 10:21AM
How can a dual boot option be a step backwards? You get to be in either OS when you want and run whatever application you wanted, even if Apple doesn't allow such a program on the iPhone such as turn by turn GPS software....seems like a step forward to me.
0mega @ Oct 13th 2008 10:32AM
I don't believe you at all quite frankly. What device are you using with windows mobile that it is SO terrible? Actually nevermind that, just tell us what your problem is.
DssTrainer @ Oct 13th 2008 2:05PM
actually I replied before the movie loaded so dual boot is actually very cool.
bob sakamano @ Oct 13th 2008 10:14AM
will this guy make any money off months of development if this is real?
Wildcats @ Oct 13th 2008 10:15AM
Most expansive? the last time i checked there are more expansive phones
