Wooden Nokia concept phone goes beyond the drawing board, gets built
Oh sure, LG has teased us with a faux wood cellphone, and Hulger has actually produced one that four people in existence can afford, but this... this is something else. According to the captions in textlad's Flickr pool, Nokia's own eco-team designed and created the object of desire that you see above: an 8-megapixel "handset" that appears to function just fine. We can already tell you this thing isn't coming to market, but we would absolutely love to be proven wrong.

I can't comment on the buttons, camera lens or speakers, but that screen is FAKE. Its a print stuck in there. Look at the right edge - its a little to jagged for a display. Also peep the lower left/left corner thats an odd looking black area. I also noticed that there is a little warp at the top o the "display" between 21-06-07 and the world and bluetooth icons.
Any chance of me getting a case like this made for my Pearl?

hm. A wooden cell phone would be pretty sweet actually. Honestly I don't need my cell phone to do more than send/receive calls, texts, and keep my numbers. All these cell phone, pmp, still camera, video camera, web browser, million-in-ones appeal to me less than a really elegant phone would. I prefer to use my computer for computing and my camera for pictures/video rather than my cell phone even though it is capable of doing such things.
If they made this phone...I would buy it, the design is just beautiful and unique. The hybridized styling of the old and new together really calls to me.

Awesome look. And you can turn it over and cut up vegetables.
I would love to see a company settle on a standard design format, like an iTouch (a single large screen - how simple is that) with customisable high-end milled shells of quality wood and metal. Maybe some leather or other materials. And release the 3D file so people can mill their own.

This is the most beautiful thing I've seen all week. (okay..so it's only Monday. This gets the week off to a good start)
Don't much care for that particular type of wood, though. Ebony or cherry wood would have easily made me drool. I really like the speaker with the screen, and the control dial.
Very Buck Rogers/Ray-gun Punk.

But will it float when it falls in the potty?
noyp @ Oct 13th 2008 5:09PM
I can imagine the witty remarks owners will make like "I've got wood!"
ScooterDe @ Oct 13th 2008 5:24PM
set it to vibrate

How is chopping down trees to make cellphones eco-friendly??
They should make one out of highly compressed cola cans and/or other garbage. Now that would be eco-friendly.
Esat Dedezade @ Oct 13th 2008 6:27PM
With sustainable development. trees grow back, especially bamboo which grows back REAL fast.
konshuss @ Oct 13th 2008 5:46PM
'Nokia Comes with Music' was one thing, but now they are giving me wood too? i think you're moving a bit fast for me Nokia.

I wouldn't mind a wood phone, but this particular design is ugly, IMO.
Phil @ Oct 13th 2008 8:24PM
Too bad it won't be able to get through customs without fumigation.
XenoX101 @ Oct 14th 2008 5:51AM
This must be the most impractical phone design I've seen so far. The screen is in the corner, not centered or even on the upper area of the phone. Somehow they thought the media buttons deserved enough space to shrink the entire screen by a quarter inch. Then you've got the navigation button thing which is half the size of the screen.
Also, how am I meant to hold it? That is, how am I meant to hold it without my thumb smearing the screen?

I'm lovin the idea of a wooden phone with silver trim. Reminds me of the dash in a high end car.
That better no be the new version of symbian (non touch version). The battery and signal meter look cool but not the tiny clock. That would have to be corrected.
